What is it?

A single-component, water-based elastomeric coating built on a styrene/acrylate aqueous emulsion that dries to a continuous flexible, waterproof film.

Where is it used?

Flat roofs, balconies, terraces, parapets and exterior vertical walls — exposed surfaces that must shed water while accommodating thermal and structural movement.

Why use it?

It combines waterproofing, crack-bridging elasticity and weather protection in one brush- or roller-applied product, with good adhesion to concrete, mortar, brick and tile and resistance to water and alkali.

How is it applied?

Cleaned, sound substrate is primed as needed, then two coats are applied by brush, roller or spray at roughly 1.5–2.0 kg/m² total, building a seamless flexible membrane.

About Fosroc Nitocote 190

Fosroc Nitocote 190 is an elastic, water-based protective and waterproofing coating from Fosroc’s Nitocote range. It is formulated on a styrene/acrylate (styrene-acrylic) co-polymer dispersed in an aqueous emulsion. Once the water phase evaporates, the emulsion coalesces into a tough, continuous and flexible film that seals the substrate against rain and standing water while remaining breathable enough to let trapped water vapour escape.

The coating is designed for surfaces that are both exposed to weather and subject to movement. Because the cured film is elastomeric rather than rigid, it stretches to accommodate the fine shrinkage and thermal cracks that develop in concrete and cement-based substrates, helping to keep the waterproof barrier intact where a brittle paint film would split. Standard shades are red and grey, giving a decorative as well as a functional finish, which makes it suitable as a visible roof or terrace coating rather than a hidden membrane.

For Indian conditions — intense monsoon rainfall, high UV and large day-to-night temperature swings — a flexible acrylic coating of this type is a practical, lower-cost line of defence for roofs, chajjas, terraces and external walls. Being water-based, it is low-odour, easy to apply with simple tools and water-cleanable before cure, which suits occupied buildings and in-situ maintenance work. Space Arc Engineering supplies and applies Nitocote 190 as an authorised Fosroc distributor and applicator across Delhi NCR and Pan-India. Note that exact dry film thickness, cure schedule, pack sizes and any third-party test certifications should be confirmed against the current Fosroc technical data sheet for your region, as these are not uniformly published across Fosroc’s territories.

The technical insight

The performance of Nitocote 190 comes from its styrene-acrylic emulsion chemistry. Styrene contributes hardness, water resistance and UV durability, while the acrylate fraction delivers flexibility, elongation and long-term adhesion — a balance that lets a single film both shed water and stretch over moving cracks. Film formation is physical (coalescence of polymer particles as water evaporates) rather than a chemical cure, so application in cool, damp or non-drying conditions will slow or prevent proper film build; the product needs warm, ventilated drying weather between coats. The breathable, vapour-permeable nature of the cured film is a deliberate design choice: it allows residual construction moisture and vapour to diffuse out instead of being trapped under the coating, which is a common cause of blistering and delamination in fully impervious systems applied over green or damp concrete. The cited application rate of roughly 1.5–2.0 kg/m² is total wet material across the system, normally split over two coats; coverage will fall on rough, porous or textured masonry that drinks more material.

Where it is used

  • Waterproofing of flat and low-slope concrete roofs and rooftop slabs
  • Balconies, terraces, sit-outs and chajjas exposed to rain and ponding
  • Parapet walls and copings as part of a roof waterproofing scheme
  • Protection of exterior vertical walls and facades against rain penetration and leaks
  • Decorative weather-protective finish on previously coated or rendered surfaces
  • In-situ maintenance and re-coating of ageing acrylic-coated roofs and terraces

Key advantages

  • Elastomeric film bridges fine shrinkage and thermal cracks, keeping the waterproof barrier continuous over moving substrates
  • Good adhesion to a wide range of substrates — concrete, cement render, mortar, brick and tile
  • Strong resistance to water and to alkalinity from cement-based backgrounds
  • Breathable and vapour-permeable, letting trapped moisture diffuse out and reducing blistering risk
  • Water-based and low-odour, with simple brush, roller or spray application and water clean-up before cure
  • Decorative red and grey finishes serve as both a protective coat and a visible top surface
  • Weather-durable with slow ageing for a long service life on exposed surfaces
  • Cost-effective, easily maintained barrier that can be re-coated in service

Limitations & considerations

  • Not a structural or trafficable membrane — unsuitable on its own for heavy foot traffic, vehicular decks or permanently submerged tanks; pair with a wearing screed or use a dedicated PU/epoxy system where movement and exposure are severe
  • Water-based film formation depends on warm, ventilated drying conditions; it should not be applied during rain, on damp surfaces, or in cold/high-humidity weather that prevents proper coalescence
  • Performance depends heavily on substrate preparation — laitance, dust, oil and loose material must be removed, and active cracks or junctions need detailing/reinforcement before coating
  • Limited standard colour range (red and grey) compared with decorative facade paints
  • Acrylic chemistry offers good but not specialist chemical resistance; not intended for aggressive chemical-immersion or industrial-spill environments
  • Published technical values vary by Fosroc territory — confirm exact DFT, cure times, elongation, pack sizes and any IS/EN test data against the current regional TDS before specifying

Selection & best practice

Prepare a sound, clean, dry substrate: remove laitance, dust, oil and loose matter, make good honeycombing and cracks, and round off sharp arrises. Pre-wet or prime porous or chalky surfaces per the current Fosroc TDS so the first coat keys properly. Apply at least two coats by brush, roller or spray, allowing the first coat to dry to a continuous film before the next, and reinforce vulnerable details — wall-to-floor junctions, drains, cracks and parapet joints — with an embedded scrim or fillet. Aim for the recommended total of about 1.5–2.0 kg/m², increasing material on rough or porous masonry. Apply only in dry, warm, well-ventilated conditions and protect freshly coated areas from rain until fully dry. Always validate dosage, drying intervals and primer requirements against the latest region-specific Fosroc technical data sheet, and have Space Arc’s applicators inspect the substrate before a large pour.

Frequently asked questions

What is Fosroc Nitocote 190 and what is it made of?
It is a flexible, water-based protective and waterproofing coating from Fosroc’s Nitocote range, based on a styrene/acrylate (styrene-acrylic) co-polymer in an aqueous emulsion. On drying it forms a continuous, elastic, waterproof film.
Where is Nitocote 190 used?
It is used to waterproof and protect flat roofs, balconies, terraces and parapets, and to protect exterior vertical walls against rain penetration and leaks. It is suited to exposed surfaces that also need a flexible, crack-bridging coating.
How much Nitocote 190 do I need per square metre?
Fosroc cites a coverage of roughly 1.5–2.0 kg/m² total for the system, normally applied in two coats. Rough, porous or textured masonry absorbs more, so allow extra material and confirm the figure against the current technical data sheet for your region.
What colours is it available in?
Standard shades are red and grey, so it can serve as both a protective coat and a visible decorative finish on roofs, terraces and walls. Availability of shades can vary by region, so confirm with Space Arc before ordering.
Is Nitocote 190 a trafficable or structural waterproofing membrane?
No. It is an elastic protective coating, not a heavy-duty trafficable deck membrane. For areas with foot or vehicle traffic, or for tanks and severe exposure, it should be protected with a screed or replaced by a dedicated PU or epoxy system. Always check suitability for your specific exposure.
Can Space Arc supply and apply Nitocote 190 in India?
Yes. Space Arc Engineering is an authorised Fosroc distributor and applicator serving Delhi NCR and Pan-India, and can supply the material, advise on substrate preparation and the correct primer, and carry out trained application.

How we position Fosroc Nitocote 190

Within the Fosroc range, Nitocote 190 sits at the flexible, water-based acrylic end of the protective-coatings family — chosen for crack-bridging weatherproofing of roofs, terraces and walls rather than chemical or industrial protection. It complements other Fosroc waterproofing options such as the cementitious Nitocote CM210/Nitoproof range, the elastomeric Nitocote PE/PU coatings for tougher exposures, and Nitoproof liquid membranes; for primer, crack-filling and screed detailing it works alongside the Nitobond, Nitomortar and Nitoseal lines. Against competitors in the Indian market, it is comparable in intent to elastomeric acrylic and waterproofing coatings from Sika (e.g. Sikalastic / SikaWall acrylic coatings), Dr. Fixit (Roofseal / Newcoat elastomeric and acrylic roof coatings from Pidilite), MBS (waterproofing coatings), and STP/Bostik membranes. Nitocote 190’s edge is the Fosroc system pedigree — backed-up primers, repair mortars and sealants — combined with the convenience of a single-component, breathable, water-based film. Where heavier traffic, immersion or aggressive chemistry is involved, a polyurethane or epoxy system (from Fosroc or the alternatives above) is the more appropriate specification; Space Arc can advise on the right product for the exposure.
