Nitocote AP35 — Anti-Carbonation Primer Coating for Concrete and Reinforced Concrete

Nitocote AP35

Anti-Carbonation Primer Coating for Concrete and Reinforced Concrete

Authorized Project Distributor — Fosroc India | Space Arc Engineering, Ghaziabad

Product Overview

Nitocote AP35 is a solvent-based penetrating primer from Fosroc formulated as the first coat in protective coating systems for concrete in aggressive environments — coastal, industrial, marine, and heavily polluted urban atmospheres where the rate of carbonation and chloride penetration is accelerated. The primer penetrates into the prepared concrete surface, consolidates the near-surface zone, and provides a key for the subsequent barrier topcoat in the Fosroc protective coating system. The solvent-borne chemistry of Nitocote AP35 gives it low viscosity and high penetration into the concrete pore structure, which is important on concrete that is slightly porous or has a higher moisture content — the solvent carrier evaporates without being affected by substrate moisture in the way that water-borne primers can be. Once cured, Nitocote AP35 provides a clear, non-film-forming penetrating consolidant in the concrete that primes the surface for the application of elastomeric or rigid barrier topcoats such as Dekguard W, Dekguard S, Nitocote EP405, or other Fosroc protective coatings. The combined system of penetrating primer plus elastomeric or barrier topcoat provides a comprehensive anti-carbonation and chloride-barrier coating system suitable for bridge structures, coastal buildings, marine infrastructure, and industrial concrete in aggressive chemical environments. Space Arc Engineering distributes Nitocote AP35 for bridge coating, marine structure protection, and industrial concrete maintenance projects across Delhi NCR and Northern India.

Applications

  • Penetrating primer for concrete before Dekguard anti-carbonation topcoat
  • Consolidating primer for porous or powdery concrete surfaces before coating
  • First coat in the Nitocote chemical resistant coating system
  • Bridge and infrastructure concrete priming in coastal and aggressive environments
  • Marine concrete structure primer in spray zone and tidal zone environments
  • Industrial concrete priming before heavy-duty chemical resistant topcoat

Key Advantages

  • Solvent-based for deep penetration into porous concrete substrates
  • Consolidates weak near-surface concrete before topcoat application
  • Compatible primer for Dekguard W, Dekguard S, and Nitocote EP405 systems
  • Provides key for subsequent elastomeric and rigid barrier coatings
  • Effective on slightly damp concrete where water-based primers may not bond
  • Designed for aggressive coastal, marine, and industrial environments

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a primer like Nitocote AP35 always required before applying Dekguard W or Dekguard S?

Whether a primer is required depends on the condition and porosity of the concrete substrate. On smooth, dense concrete, a topcoat such as Dekguard W may bond adequately without a dedicated primer. On porous, abraded, sand-blasted, or slightly powdery concrete, a penetrating primer such as Nitocote AP35 significantly improves the adhesion and long-term performance of the topcoat system. For concrete in aggressive environments (coastal, marine, industrial) where coating integrity over many years is critical, including a penetrating primer as the first step is best practice and is the basis of the full Fosroc coating system specification. Always refer to the current Fosroc product data sheet and system specification for the specific combination of primer and topcoat.

How long should I wait between applying Nitocote AP35 and the topcoat?

The overcoat interval for Nitocote AP35 is typically 4 to 24 hours at 20 degrees C, depending on the ambient temperature and ventilation. The primer must be fully dry (solvent evaporated) before applying the topcoat — applying a water-based topcoat over a wet solvent primer can cause the solvent to be trapped and lead to blistering. In hot Indian summer conditions (above 35 degrees C), the minimum overcoat time is reduced. In cool or humid conditions (below 15 degrees C or high RH), the overcoat time is extended. Check the primer surface is dry and tack-free before applying the topcoat.

Can Nitocote AP35 be used as a standalone protective treatment without a topcoat?

Nitocote AP35 is a penetrating primer, not a barrier topcoat. When applied alone, it consolidates the concrete surface and partially reduces water absorption, but it does not form a film barrier coating on the surface and does not provide the same level of protection against carbonation, chloride ingress, or water penetration that a full primer-plus-topcoat system provides. For full anti-carbonation protection and water barrier performance, Nitocote AP35 must be followed by a compatible Fosroc barrier topcoat such as Dekguard W or Dekguard S. The primer alone is not a substitute for the complete protective coating system in aggressive exposure environments.
