About Fosroc Nitocote EP140
Fosroc Nitocote EP140 is a two-component, solvent-borne epoxy resin coating engineered to protect steel and concrete from corrosion, chemical attack and abrasion in demanding industrial settings. Supplied as a pre-weighed base and hardener, it is mixed on site and applied as a brush, roller or spray coating that cures to a smooth, glossy, hygienic film. Once cured, the film resists a wide range of mineral and organic acids, alkalis, fats and oils, which is why it is specified for tanks, walls, columns and ducts where surfaces are routinely washed down or come into contact with aggressive media.\n\nWithin the Fosroc Nitocote family of protective coatings, EP140 sits in the chemical- and abrasion-resistant epoxy bracket. It is a primarily internal protective coating for steel and concrete; the related Nitocote EP140(M) variant adds micaceous iron oxide (MIO) and epoxy-polyamide chemistry for tougher internal and external exposure and improved UV durability. For Indian contractors, consultants and procurement teams, EP140 is a familiar, widely stocked workhorse for hygienic and chemical-resistant linings where a robust two-pack epoxy is called for but a full solvent-free tank lining or coal-tar system would be over-specified.\n\nSpace Arc Engineering supplies Nitocote EP140 as an authorised Fosroc distributor and applicator across Delhi NCR and Pan-India, with specification support, surface-preparation guidance and trained application crews. Because the precise figures for any coating depend on the current regional Technical Data Sheet, we always reconcile coverage, thickness and cure against the latest Fosroc India TDS before a project is priced or applied.
The technical insight
Nitocote EP140 is a solvented (solvent-borne) two-pack epoxy, distinct from solvent-free tank-lining grades such as Nitocote EP405 and from the MIO-loaded EP140(M). The solvent carrier lowers viscosity so the coating wets out and bonds directly to mild steel and concrete with good edge and detail coverage, but it also means film build per coat is moderate and the system relies on two coats to reach its target dry film thickness. Fosroc India quotes a theoretical coverage of about 10 m² per litre per coat at 100 microns wet film thickness, with the cured system forming a smooth film of approximately 80 microns DFT. As with all epoxies, the chemistry is moisture- and temperature-sensitive at the point of cure: the base and hardener must be mixed in the supplied pre-weighed ratio and used within the pot life, and the substrate must be sound, dry and correctly primed for the quoted adhesion and chemical resistance to be realised. Solvent content also makes ventilation and a compatible Fosroc solvent for tool cleaning essential during application.
Where it is used
- Internal lining of steel storage and process tanks exposed to chemicals, fats or oils
- Protective coating of concrete walls in plants requiring a hygienic, washable surface
- Coating of concrete and metal columns against corrosion and abrasion
- Lining of sluices, channels and ducts conveying mildly aggressive media
- Chemical- and abrasion-resistant coating in food, beverage and process industries
- General corrosion protection of steel and concrete surfaces in industrial facilities
Key advantages
- Excellent adhesion – bonds directly to mild steel and concrete substrates
- Forms a smooth, glossy, hygienic film that is easy to clean and wash down
- Two-component pre-weighed packs reduce on-site mixing errors
- Resists a wide range of mineral and organic acids, alkalis, fats and oils
- Applied by brush, roller or spray to suit site conditions and geometry
- Chemical- and abrasion-resistant film proven against many industrial chemicals
- Suitable for both vertical and horizontal surfaces
Limitations & considerations
- Solvent-borne, so good ventilation, fire precautions and solvent handling are required during application
- Primarily an internal coating; for external or UV-exposed surfaces the MIO-based Nitocote EP140(M) or a polyurethane topcoat is generally preferred
- Like all epoxies, application and cure are sensitive to low temperature, dampness and high humidity on the substrate
- Requires thorough surface preparation and appropriate priming to achieve quoted adhesion and chemical resistance
- Two-pack material must be used within its pot life after mixing – waste rises if mixed in excess
- Not a structural or crack-bridging product; moving cracks must be addressed separately
- Verify food-contact or potable-water suitability against the current TDS – solvent-free grades such as Nitocote EP405/ET range are intended for potable water structures
Selection & best practice
Achieve a sound, clean, dry substrate before coating: grit-blast or mechanically prepare steel to remove rust and mill scale, and remove laitance, oil and loose material from concrete, making good blowholes with a suitable epoxy filler. Apply the recommended primer system and respect the overcoating window. Stir the base, add the entire hardener in the pre-weighed ratio and mix thoroughly to a uniform colour, then apply two coats by brush, roller or spray to reach the specified DFT, keeping a wet edge. Mix only what can be used within the pot life, maintain ventilation, keep ignition sources away, and clean tools immediately with the compatible Fosroc solvent. Always confirm coverage, thickness, primer and cure times against the current Fosroc India Technical Data Sheet for the batch supplied.

How we position Fosroc Nitocote EP140
Nitocote EP140 is the everyday, chemical- and abrasion-resistant epoxy in Fosroc’s Nitocote protective-coating range – a solvented two-pack that bonds directly to steel and concrete and is ideal for internal tanks, walls, columns, sluices and ducts. It pairs naturally with related Fosroc products: choose Nitocote EP140(M) (epoxy-polyamide + MIO) when the surface is external or UV-exposed; step up to solvent-free, food-grade grades such as Nitocote EP405 or the Nitocote ET range for potable-water structures; specify Nitocote ET550 (epoxy coal-tar) for submerged or buried steel; use Nitozinc Primer or Nitoprime systems for steel priming and Expocrete/Nitomortar fillers to make good substrates first. Against the wider market, credible alternatives an Indian specifier may evaluate include Sika (Sikagard and Sika Permacor coating ranges), MBCC/Master Builders Solutions (MasterProtect), Dr. Fixit (Pidilite) for protective and anti-carbonation coatings, and STP Limited for industrial and tank-lining systems. EP140’s strength is its proven track record, wide availability and straightforward two-coat application in India; where extreme chemical immersion, potable-water contact or heavy UV exposure is the governing requirement, a purpose-specific lining from Fosroc’s own range or a comparable specialist system is the better fit. Space Arc Engineering can help match the exact grade to your exposure, substrate and standards.
