Fosroc Nitozinc Primer
A two-component zinc-rich epoxy primer that shields exposed reinforcement steel during concrete repair, stopping corrosion at the source before you patch back.
What is it?
A two-component, zinc-rich epoxy primer that combines metallic zinc dust with an epoxy binder to protect exposed steel reinforcement during concrete repair work.
Where is it used?
Brushed onto cleaned rebar in patch repairs, spall repairs and structural rehabilitation across bridges, buildings, water structures and industrial concrete.
Why use it?
It stops fresh corrosion on newly exposed steel and prevents incipient (halo) anodes forming in the concrete immediately around a completed repair.
How is it applied?
Blast or wire-brush the steel to bright metal, mix both components, then apply two brush coats at roughly 40 microns dry film each before overcoating with a Fosroc repair mortar.
About Fosroc Nitozinc Primer
Nitozinc Primer is Fosroc’s dedicated reinforcement primer for the concrete repair sequence. When spalled or carbonated cover is broken out, the steel underneath is left bare and vulnerable, and any residual chloride or moisture will keep driving corrosion long after the patch looks finished. Nitozinc Primer is supplied as a base and a hardener that, once mixed, produce a grey liquid loaded with metallic zinc. Painted onto the cleaned bars, it forms a film that behaves like a miniature galvanising layer, sacrificing zinc in preference to the steel so the reinforcement stays passive within the repair zone.
For engineers and applicators working across Delhi NCR and pan-India, the value of Nitozinc Primer lies in how it closes a well-known failure loop. A cosmetically sound patch that leaves adjacent steel unprotected often triggers a fresh ring of corrosion just outside the repair, the so-called incipient anode effect, and the structure is back on the punch list within a year or two. Space Arc supplies Nitozinc Primer as part of a complete Fosroc repair system, so the primer, the bonding coat and the repair mortar are all designed to work together rather than as mismatched parts sourced separately.
The technical insight
The primer works through galvanic, or sacrificial, protection. Because the dry film carries more than 84% zinc by weight, the zinc particles sit in electrical contact with the steel and with each other, and zinc is more electrochemically active than iron. In the presence of moisture the zinc corrodes preferentially and feeds electrons to the steel, holding the reinforcement at a potential where it cannot rust. Fosroc’s data shows that an unbroken film of just 40 microns dry film thickness is enough to deliver this active protection and to suppress the incipient anodes that would otherwise form in the concrete next to the repair. The practical takeaways are two: continuity and thickness matter more than a thick, patchy coat, so full wrap-around coverage of every exposed bar is essential; and because protection depends on an intact zinc film, the steel must be cleaned back to bright metal so the primer bonds directly to sound substrate rather than sitting on rust.
Where it is used
- Priming exposed reinforcement steel before hand-applied or sprayed concrete repair mortars
- Patch and spall repairs to carbonated or chloride-affected reinforced concrete
- Rehabilitation of bridge decks, piers, beams and soffits where cover has been lost
- Water-retaining and marine structures where reinforcement is exposed during repair
- Industrial floors, columns and frames undergoing structural concrete repair
- Priming rebar ahead of Renderoc mortars and Fosroc fluid micro-concretes
- Protecting starter bars and reinforcement laps left exposed between pours
- Localised protection of corroded steel after mechanical cleaning in maintenance works
Key advantages
- Active galvanic protection: zinc sacrifices itself to keep the steel passive rather than merely coating it
- Suppresses incipient anodes, preventing the ring of corrosion that plagues untreated repairs
- High zinc loading, greater than 84% by weight in the dry film, for reliable electrochemical action
- Only 40 microns dry film thickness needed per coat to achieve protection
- Fast touch dry of 30 to 45 minutes keeps the repair sequence moving on site
- Compatible with all Renderoc mortars and Fosroc fluid micro-concretes for a single-source system
- Good bond strength within cementitious repairs, so it does not create a weak plane under the mortar
- Simple two-coat brush application needs no specialist spray equipment
Limitations & considerations
- Not a general-purpose steel paint; it is formulated for the concrete repair sequence, not decorative or long-term exposed-steel duty
- Performance depends on clean bright steel, so it cannot be relied upon over loose rust, scale or contamination
- As a two-component epoxy it has a limited pot life once mixed and must be used promptly
- Protection needs an unbroken film, so missed spots or thin patches on the back of bars leave gaps in cover
- Requires timely overcoating with the repair mortar within the recommended window to build the full system
- Being solvent-based, it needs adequate ventilation and standard PPE during mixing and application
Selection & best practice
Start by exposing the steel fully, breaking out concrete to at least 20 to 25 mm behind the bar so the primer can wrap right around it. Clean the reinforcement back to bright metal by grit blasting or wire brushing, removing every trace of rust, scale and old concrete, then remove dust. Stir the base, add the hardener and mix thoroughly with a slow-speed drill and paddle until the grey colour is uniform, leaving no unmixed streaks. Apply the first coat by brush, working it into the underside and back of each bar, and allow it to touch dry, typically 30 to 45 minutes. Follow with a second coat at right angles to catch any missed areas, aiming for roughly 40 microns dry film per coat. Overcoat with the chosen Fosroc repair mortar within the recommended window, usually within 30 minutes to an hour of the primer becoming touch dry, so the mortar keys onto a fresh surface. Mix only what can be used within the pot life, and never stretch the primer thin to make it go further.

Industry use cases
Bridges & Infrastructure
Priming corroded reinforcement in decks, piers and crossheads during structural rehabilitation, stopping chloride-driven corrosion before Renderoc patch repairs go on.
Water & Wastewater
Protecting exposed steel in tanks, treatment structures and channels where damp, aggressive conditions make halo corrosion around repairs a constant risk.
Commercial & High-Rise Buildings
Treating rebar in spalled columns, beams and slab soffits during facade and structural repair so patched areas do not fail again at their edges.
Industrial Plants
Repairing reinforced concrete in factories, warehouses and process areas where exposed steel needs quick, reliable protection to keep shutdown windows short.
Marine & Coastal Structures
Priming reinforcement in jetties, sea-facing buildings and coastal infrastructure where salt exposure demands active galvanic protection of the steel.

How we position Fosroc Nitozinc Primer
Nitozinc Primer is the reinforcement-protection step in a full Fosroc concrete repair system, so it is rarely bought alone. Pair it with a Renderoc repair mortar such as Renderoc HB (fosroc-renderoc-hb) for high-build vertical and overhead patch repairs, or step up to Nitomortar S (fosroc-nitomortar-s) where a high-strength structural-grade epoxy mortar is called for. For larger reinstatements, the same primer works under Fosroc fluid micro-concretes. As an authorised Fosroc distributor and applicator across Delhi NCR and pan-India, Space Arc can specify the complete primer-plus-mortar system, and where a project also involves waterproofing or protective anti-carbonation coatings we can cross-reference the relevant Fosroc Dekguard and Nitocote ranges, or equivalent systems from our other brand families, so the repair is protected for the long term.
