Lightweight Polymer-Modified Repair Mortar for Overhead and Vertical Surfaces

Authorized Project Distributor — Fosroc India | Space Arc Engineering, Ghaziabad

Product Overview

Renderoc L is a lightweight, polymer-modified, single-component cementitious repair mortar from Fosroc specifically formulated for repair of overhead surfaces (soffits of beams, slabs, and bridge decks) and vertical surfaces where the application of a conventional full-density repair mortar would result in sagging and loss of material before the mortar achieves adequate green strength to support its own weight. The lower density of Renderoc L (achieved through the use of lightweight filler materials in the aggregate blend) reduces the weight of the applied mortar per unit volume, directly reducing the gravitational force acting downward on the freshly placed material and reducing the tendency to sag and slip from the substrate. The polymer modification of Renderoc L provides additional benefits: higher early cohesion (which helps the mortar grip the substrate and resist gravitational pull), improved bond strength to the existing concrete, and better durability in the cured state (lower permeability, higher flexibility, and better resistance to freeze-thaw cycling). Renderoc L can be applied by hand trowel or by spray (using a rendering machine with appropriate pump and nozzle equipment), making it suitable for both large-area soffit repairs and precision manual repairs. The product is compatible with all Fosroc bonding agents and can be used as part of a complete Fosroc repair system including primer, repair mortar, and protective coating. Space Arc Engineering distributes Renderoc L for bridge deck soffit, parking structure soffit, and building concrete soffit repair projects across Delhi NCR and Northern India.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does overhead soffit concrete repair require a lightweight mortar rather than a standard repair mortar?

When repair mortar is applied to an overhead soffit surface, gravity acts directly against the bond between the fresh mortar and the substrate. Standard repair mortars are denser (approximately 2100 to 2200 kg per cubic metre) and the weight per unit area of a 25 mm coat is significant — typically 50 to 55 kg per square metre. The fresh mortar must develop enough cohesive strength and adhesion to the primed substrate to resist this gravitational pull before it sets. If the mortar is too heavy, too thick, or the green strength development is too slow, the mortar sags and eventually slides or falls. Renderoc L reduces this risk by reducing the density of the mortar (to approximately 1600 to 1800 kg per cubic metre), reducing the weight per unit area and giving the bond and cohesion more time to develop before the gravitational force overcomes them.

How thick can a single coat of Renderoc L be applied to an overhead soffit?

The maximum recommended single-coat thickness for Renderoc L on overhead soffits is typically 20 to 30 mm, depending on the ambient temperature, the substrate roughness, the surface absorption, and the mixing water content. Warmer temperatures (above 25 degrees C) accelerate the green strength development and allow thicker single coats without sagging. Cooler temperatures require thinner coats to avoid sagging before the mortar stiffens. For repairs requiring more than the maximum single-coat thickness, the mortar should be applied in two or more coats, allowing each coat to set (typically 2 to 4 hours) before applying the next. Using a slightly stiffer (drier) mix reduces sagging risk but must not compromise the workability needed for full contact with the substrate and primer.

Can Renderoc L be used for the complete depth of a soffit repair including a heavy corrosion-damaged zone?

For deep soffit repairs where there is extensive corrosion of the reinforcing steel and significant concrete loss, a combined approach is typically needed. The corroded steel should be treated (cleaned back to bright metal and coated with a corrosion-inhibiting primer such as Nitobond EP or a steel primer). Deeper voids may require filling with a conventional repair mortar applied from the bottom of the repair area upward (using Renderoc HB2 or similar) to bring the repair to within 10 to 20 mm of the final surface. Renderoc L is then applied as the final finishing coat for the overhead surface at the correct depth for a lightweight system. Using Renderoc L for the full depth of a very deep repair (above 50 mm) increases the risk of delamination of the lightweight mortar under its own accumulated weight during application.
