What is it?

A chloride-free liquid accelerating admixture supplied as a pale yellow solution, added at the spray gun to give sprayed concrete a rapid set.

Where is it used?

Tunnel and gallery linings, rock slope stabilisation, ground support and any wet- or dry-process shotcrete where fast set and low rebound matter.

Why use it?

It lets crews build thick sections in a single pass, cuts rebound waste, and holds material overhead without slump or sag.

How is it applied?

Dosed continuously into the concrete stream at the nozzle during spraying; it is never batched into the mixer or applied to the finished surface.

About Fosroc Sprayset SL

Fosroc Sprayset SL sits in the sprayed-concrete admixture family, the products that decide whether a shotcrete pass builds cleanly or slides off the wall. It is a chloride-free liquid accelerator, a pale yellow solution that is fed into the spraying nozzle and blended with the concrete stream at the very moment of placement. As the accelerated mix hits the substrate it stiffens almost immediately, so the sprayed layer grips the surface, resists sagging and can be built up to a working thickness without waiting for successive thin coats to cure. That behaviour is what makes modern shotcrete practical on the steep, overhead and irregular faces found in tunnels and on rock slopes.

Because the accelerator is introduced at the gun rather than in the mixer, the base concrete stays workable and pumpable right up to the nozzle, and only the material actually being placed is set-accelerated. Sprayset SL is compatible with both the wet process, where a ready-mixed concrete is pumped to the nozzle, and the dry process, where dry mix and water meet at the gun. Being chloride-free, it avoids the corrosion risk that older calcium-chloride accelerators posed to embedded steel and mesh, and it is non-flammable, which matters in confined underground environments. Space Arc Engineering supplies Sprayset SL as an authorised Fosroc distributor and applicator across Delhi NCR and Pan-India, with technical support on dosing trials and process set-up.

The technical insight

Sprayed concrete has a contradiction built into it: the mix must stay fluid enough to pump and atomise at the nozzle, yet it must stiffen the instant it lands so it can hold on a vertical or overhead face without falling off. Sprayset SL resolves this by keeping the accelerator and the concrete apart until the last possible moment. The base mix travels to the gun in its normal workable state; only when the liquid accelerator is injected into the stream does the chemistry change. The accelerator drives the cement’s early hydration reactions forward rapidly, so the paste flashes from plastic to stiff within moments of impact. That near-instant set does three things at once: it grips the substrate so fresh material bonds instead of rebounding, it lets each pass carry more thickness before the next is applied, and it stabilises overhead placement where gravity would otherwise pull an unset layer down. Keeping the formulation chloride-free means this early strength gain is achieved without introducing chlorides that would attack reinforcement over the structure’s life.

Where it is used

  • Sprayed concrete linings in drill-and-blast and NATM tunnels
  • Gunite and shotcrete ground support in underground works and galleries
  • Rock and soil slope stabilisation and consolidation
  • Waterproof shotcrete claddings over rock or concrete faces
  • Overhead and vertical sprayed concrete where sag resistance is critical
  • Thick single-pass shotcrete build-up on irregular profiles
  • Erosion protection of exposed rock and cut surfaces
  • Both wet-process (pumped) and dry-process (dry-mix) spraying systems

Key advantages

  • Chloride-free, so it accelerates set without risk of corrosion to embedded steel and mesh
  • Rapid set at the point of placement enables fast thickness build-up
  • Reduces rebound, cutting material waste and clean-up on site
  • Supports single-pass application of thick coatings instead of multiple thin lifts
  • Performs reliably on overhead and steeply inclined faces
  • Compatible with both wet and dry sprayed-concrete processes
  • Non-flammable, suited to confined underground and tunnel environments
  • Dosed at the nozzle, so the base mix stays workable and pumpable up to placement

Limitations & considerations

  • It is an accelerating admixture, not a repair, levelling or finishing mortar, and is never trowelled onto a surface
  • Optimum dosage depends on cement type, mix design and site temperature and must be established by trial
  • Over-dosing can compromise ultimate strength while under-dosing leaves the mix prone to sag and rebound
  • It requires nozzle-metering equipment and trained shotcrete operators to introduce it accurately
  • Handling calls for eye and skin protection as with other alkaline accelerator solutions
  • It governs early set only; final durability still depends on a sound base mix design and correct curing

Selection & best practice

Meter Sprayset SL continuously into the concrete stream at the spray nozzle using a calibrated dosing pump rather than adding it to the mixer or batch. Fix the dosage by carrying out spray trials on site with the actual cement, aggregates and mix design, adjusting for ambient temperature until you achieve the target set-up time, minimum rebound and stable overhead build. Keep the base mix consistent and pumpable, and on wet-process work pair it with a suitable superplasticiser to hold slump to the gun. Prepare and dampen the receiving surface, apply in controlled passes to the trial-proven thickness, and ensure the sprayed concrete is cured properly once placed. Store the product in sealed containers away from frost, wear eye and skin protection when handling, and confirm the full current Technical Data Sheet and SDS for the India market with Space Arc before starting.

Frequently asked questions

Is Sprayset SL a mortar or a spray-applied coating?
No. It is a liquid setting accelerator, not a mortar. It is dosed into the concrete at the spray nozzle to make sprayed concrete set fast; it is never trowelled or sprayed onto a surface on its own.
Where is the accelerator added, in the mixer or at the nozzle?
At the nozzle. It is metered continuously into the concrete stream at the point of spraying, which keeps the base mix workable and pumpable and only accelerates the material actually being placed.
Does it work with both wet and dry shotcrete processes?
Yes. Sprayset SL is compatible with wet-process spraying, where ready-mixed concrete is pumped to the gun, and with dry-process spraying, where dry mix and water combine at the nozzle.
Is it safe for steel-reinforced or mesh-reinforced shotcrete?
It is a chloride-free formulation, so it accelerates set without introducing chlorides that would corrode embedded steel and mesh, unlike older chloride-based accelerators.
How much Sprayset SL should we dose?
Dosage depends on your cement, mix design and site temperature, so it must be fixed by on-site spray trials. Space Arc can support the trial and confirm current figures against the India Technical Data Sheet.
Can Space Arc supply Sprayset SL across India?
Yes. Space Arc Engineering is an authorised Fosroc distributor and applicator supplying Sprayset SL across Delhi NCR and Pan-India, with technical support on dosing and shotcrete process set-up.

How we position Fosroc Sprayset SL

Sprayset SL is the rapid-set accelerator in Fosroc’s sprayed-concrete system and works alongside the products that complete a shotcrete mix. On wet-process jobs it pairs naturally with Fosroc Conplast SP430, a chloride-free superplasticiser that keeps the base concrete pumpable to the nozzle before Sprayset SL sets it on impact; where silica-fume performance or high-build behaviour is specified, Fosroc offers Sprayset SF and the alkali-free Sprayset HBL/HBP accelerators as alternatives within the same family. For repair and resurfacing work, which is a different job entirely, look to the Fosroc Renderoc mortar range rather than an accelerator. Space Arc also carries admixtures from MC-Bauchemie and Sika for projects specified around those systems, and our team can help match the right accelerator, plasticiser and mix to your tunnel or slope requirement.
