Sprayset HBL
Hand-Applied and Spray-Applied Background Levelling Mortar for Large-Area Surfaces
Authorized Project Distributor — Fosroc India | Space Arc Engineering, Ghaziabad
Product Overview
Sprayset HBL is a factory-blended, polymer-modified, cementitious background levelling mortar from Fosroc that can be applied by either hand (trowel or float application) or spray (using render pump equipment), providing versatility for both small and large-area surface levelling and background preparation works. Background levelling mortars serve a critical function in building envelope, waterproofing, and surface finishing works: concrete and masonry surfaces as-struck are rarely flat and regular enough to receive a quality finish coat, waterproofing system, or decorative render directly without intermediate surface regularisation. Out-of-plane irregularities, form tie holes, blowholes, surface voids, construction joints with misaligned shutter boards, and general surface roughness all need to be levelled before the final finish or waterproofing system is applied. Sprayset HBL is designed to fill and level these surface irregularities in a controlled mortar coat of varying thickness, building up the surface profile to a consistently flat background for subsequent work. The polymer modification provides improved adhesion, reduced shrinkage, and water resistance compared to a standard sand-cement render mix. The product can be applied by hand trowel for small areas and precision levelling, and by spray machine for large-area industrial and infrastructure applications. Space Arc Engineering distributes Sprayset HBL for building envelope, infrastructure surface preparation, and waterproofing system substrate work across Delhi NCR, Ghaziabad, and Northern India.

Frequently Asked Questions
When should Sprayset HBL be used as a background coat versus applying the finish coat directly to the concrete?
The decision to use a background levelling mortar such as Sprayset HBL before the finish coat depends on the condition of the concrete substrate and the flatness tolerance required by the subsequent finish or coating system. A waterproofing system applied over a surface with significant out-of-flatness will have variable membrane thickness — thin over ridges and thick over voids — potentially reducing waterproofing performance. A decorative render over an irregular background will require excessive thickness variation in the finish coat, increasing cost and crack risk. Sprayset HBL as a background coat standardises the surface to a consistent flat profile before the finish is applied, improving the quality and longevity of the subsequent treatment.
What is the maximum thickness that can be applied in a single coat of Sprayset HBL?
Sprayset HBL can be applied in a single coat up to approximately 25 mm on vertical surfaces and 20 mm on overhead soffits. At greater thickness in a single application, the weight of the fresh mortar can exceed the adhesion to the substrate, leading to sagging on vertical surfaces and potential drop-off overhead. For levelling requirements greater than 25 mm, the work should be done in multiple coats — applying the first coat and allowing it to cure (typically 24 hours) before applying the second coat. Each coat should be keyed (combed or scratched) before setting to provide a mechanical key for the next coat.
Can Sprayset HBL be used outdoors and how does it perform in rain before it has cured?
Sprayset HBL can be used on external surfaces exposed to weathering. The polymer modification provides improved water resistance compared to a plain sand-cement render, and the cured mortar is suitable for exterior exposure in Indian climatic conditions. However, fresh Sprayset HBL mortar that has not yet set is vulnerable to rain damage — rain falling on fresh mortar washes out the cement from the surface, leaving a weakened sand-rich surface layer. Freshly applied Sprayset HBL should be protected from rain for a minimum of 4 to 6 hours after application. In monsoon conditions, provision of temporary rain protection over freshly applied areas is essential.
