BrandFosrocCategoryProtective CoatingsFormA ready-to-use, single-component grey primer loaded with metallic zinc that coats freshly exposed steel reinforcement…

What is it?

A ready-to-use, single-component grey primer loaded with metallic zinc that coats freshly exposed steel reinforcement to stop it corroding again.

Where is it used?

Applied to cleaned rebar inside concrete repair patches on beams, columns, slabs, chajjas, water tanks and any spalled RCC before the repair mortar goes on.

Why use it?

The zinc film gives sacrificial, electrochemical protection to the steel and suppresses the incipient-anode effect at the edges of a repair, so the patch lasts rather than blistering off in a year or two.

How is it applied?

Brush two coats onto power-tool-cleaned bars; it is touch dry in roughly 15 to 45 minutes and can be overcoated within about 30 to 60 minutes, so the mortar can follow the same shift.

About Fosroc Nitoprime Zincrich

Nitoprime Zincrich is Fosroc’s go-to primer for the single most vulnerable moment in any concrete repair: the point where corroded cover has been broken out and the steel reinforcement sits bare, exposed to air, chlorides and moisture. Left untreated, that steel keeps rusting under the fresh mortar and eventually pushes the repair off the substrate. This primer answers the problem directly. It is a single-component, metallic-zinc-rich coating that you brush straight onto the cleaned bars. Because the zinc sits in intimate electrical contact with the steel, it behaves as a sacrificial anode and corrodes in preference to the reinforcement, buying the repair years of protected service.

For the site team the appeal is practical. There is no mixing ratio to get wrong and no pot life racing against you, because it comes ready to use in one tin. It is a fast-drying material, touch dry in about 15 to 45 minutes and generally recoatable within 30 to 60 minutes, so a bar can be cleaned, primed with two coats and covered with Renderoc mortar inside the same working window. That single detail keeps a repair cycle moving and stops the primed steel sitting open overnight. It is the primer Fosroc specifies as part of its wider concrete-repair system rather than a stand-alone paint, which is exactly how a specifier should treat it.

The technical insight

The protection here is electrochemical, not merely a barrier. An ordinary paint just seals the steel; the moment that film is scratched or a pinhole forms, corrosion restarts underneath. A zinc-rich primer works differently. The dry film carries enough metallic zinc in continuous contact with the steel that the zinc becomes the anode in the corrosion cell and gives up itself first, cathodically protecting the reinforcement even at small defects. Equally important is what it does at the boundary of the repair. When you patch one spalled zone, the freshly repaired steel can become cathodic and drive fresh corrosion in the still-passive bar just outside the patch, the classic incipient-anode or ring-anode effect that makes repairs fail in a halo around the original damage. By keeping the primed steel at a comparable potential, Nitoprime Zincrich helps suppress that adjacent attack, which is why Fosroc treats it as a system component alongside the Renderoc mortars rather than an optional touch-up.

Where it is used

  • Priming exposed reinforcement in RCC patch repairs before Renderoc HB40 Plus, HB70 Plus or LA55 Plus mortars
  • Corrosion treatment of spalled beams, columns and soffits in ageing buildings and bridges
  • Repairs to chloride- and carbonation-damaged concrete in coastal and marine-adjacent structures
  • Water tank, STP and reservoir wall repairs where bars have been exposed
  • Refurbishment of car park decks, chajjas, canopies and balcony slabs
  • Rebar protection during structural repair of industrial floors and plant structures
  • Spot treatment of localised corrosion found during condition surveys and audits
  • Priming of starter bars and cut reinforcement left exposed during staged construction

Key advantages

  • Active, sacrificial zinc protection rather than a passive barrier, so small film defects do not restart corrosion
  • Single component and ready to use, with no mixing ratio to get wrong and no restrictive pot life on site
  • Fast drying, typically touch dry in 15 to 45 minutes, keeping the repair cycle on schedule
  • Recoatable within roughly 30 to 60 minutes, so mortar can follow within the same shift
  • Helps suppress the incipient-anode effect at the edges of a repair, protecting adjacent sound reinforcement
  • Easy brush application onto rebar of any profile, including congested or awkwardly placed bars
  • Purpose-matched to the Fosroc Renderoc repair-mortar system for a fully warranted repair build-up
  • Economical in use with minimal wastage from a single tin

Limitations & considerations

  • It is a reinforcement primer, not a decorative or general-purpose steel paint, and should not be used as a topcoat
  • Steel must be cleaned back to a bright, sound surface first; it cannot protect over loose rust, scale, oil or laitance
  • Being solvent-based it is flammable, so it needs ventilation and ignition control during application and drying
  • It should not be applied below about 5 degrees C or onto wet or contaminated bars
  • Primed bars should be overcoated with repair mortar reasonably promptly and not left weathering for extended periods
  • For heavy-duty or immersed corrosion exposure a two-component epoxy zinc-rich primer may be the more robust specification

Selection & best practice

Preparation decides the result. Break out all unsound and delaminated concrete to expose the full corroded length of the bar, then clean the steel back to a bright metal finish by wire brushing or, better, power-tool cleaning, removing every trace of rust, scale, oil and old laitance. Clean the rear face of the bar as well, not just the visible front. Stir the primer thoroughly and apply the first coat by brush, working it fully around the bar so no shadowed area is missed. Allow it to become touch dry, then apply the second coat to build a continuous film. Overcoat with the specified Renderoc mortar within the recommended window while the primer is still fresh rather than leaving primed steel open to the weather. Keep the work above 5 degrees C, provide ventilation because the material is flammable, and close tins between coats to protect the remaining product.

Frequently asked questions

Is Nitoprime Zincrich single-component or a two-part epoxy?
It is a single-component, ready-to-use zinc-rich primer. There is no mixing and no pot life to manage. If your specification specifically calls for a two-component epoxy zinc-rich primer, that is a different product in the range, Nitoprime Zincrich 2.
How does a zinc-rich primer actually protect the steel?
The dry film holds metallic zinc in electrical contact with the reinforcement, so the zinc corrodes sacrificially and cathodically protects the steel. This keeps working even if the film is scratched, unlike an ordinary barrier paint.
How soon can I apply the repair mortar over it?
It is fast drying, typically touch dry in 15 to 45 minutes and recoatable within roughly 30 to 60 minutes, so in most conditions you can prime and overcoat with Renderoc mortar within the same shift.
How should the steel be prepared before priming?
Break out unsound concrete to fully expose the bar, then clean the steel to bright metal by wire or power-tool cleaning, removing all rust, scale, oil and laitance, including the back face of the bar. The primer cannot protect over loose rust.
Which Fosroc mortars is it meant to be used with?
It is the recommended primer for the Fosroc Renderoc concrete-repair system, including mortars such as Renderoc HB40 Plus, HB70 Plus and LA55 Plus. Using it as part of that system keeps the whole repair build-up compatible.
Do I need special precautions during application?
Yes. The material is flammable, so keep it away from ignition sources, ensure good ventilation and use appropriate gloves and protection. Apply only above about 5 degrees C and onto dry, clean steel.

How we position Fosroc Nitoprime Zincrich

Nitoprime Zincrich is the reinforcement-priming step in a full Fosroc concrete-repair build-up, so it is naturally specified alongside the Renderoc repair mortars (HB40 Plus, HB70 Plus, LA55 Plus) it is designed to work under, with a fairing coat and a protective anti-carbonation coating such as Dekguard to complete the system. Space Arc supplies the whole chain rather than the primer alone. Where a project needs equivalent products from other brands we distribute, comparable rebar primers and repair systems are available from Sika, Dr. Fixit and MC-Bauchemie, and our team can help you match a like-for-like specification.
