MC-Bauchemie Centrament Flow 500
An ultra-high-range polycarboxylate ether superplasticiser from MC-Bauchemie, built for self-compacting concrete, ultra-high-strength precast and UHPC at very low water-cement ratios.
What is it?
A high-molecular-weight PCE (polycarboxylate ether) superplasticiser that pushes fresh concrete to self-compacting flow while allowing water-cement ratios down to 0.22, without loss of cohesion.
Where is it used?
Precast yards and specialist RMC plants producing SCC, C80-C100 high-strength concrete, UHPC and reactive powder concrete for bridges, piles, columns and architectural elements.
Why use it?
It delivers 30-40% water reduction at equal workability, so mixes gain extreme fluidity and high early and ultimate strength in one admixture, often without a separate viscosity modifier.
How is it applied?
Dosed as a liquid at 0.8-2.0% by weight of total cementitious material, added with the mixing water and mixed for a full cycle so the polymer fully disperses across cement and silica fume.
About MC-Bauchemie Centrament Flow 500
Centrament Flow 500 sits at the top end of MC-Bauchemie’s Centrament admixture range, aimed squarely at concrete that ordinary plasticisers and even conventional PCEs cannot handle. It is engineered for mixes that must stay fluid at very low water content, the sort of concrete a precast plant needs when a segmental box girder or a densely reinforced column has to fill and consolidate under its own weight. Rather than simply thinning the paste, the polymer holds the mix cohesive as it flows, which is why the same product suits both classic self-compacting concrete and the far more demanding worlds of ultra-high-strength and ultra-high-performance concrete.
For Indian precasters, consultants and specialist contractors, the appeal is practical. One admixture covers self-compacting concrete with slump flow in the 560 to 850 mm band, C80 to C100 high-strength precast, and UHPC in the C100 to C120 range, so a plant running multiple product lines does not have to stock several superplasticisers. Space Arc Engineering supplies Centrament Flow 500 as an authorised MC-Bauchemie channel across Delhi NCR and pan-India, and because these mixes are unforgiving, we treat every enquiry as a trial-mix conversation rather than a drum sale, matching dosage to your cement, silica fume and GGBFS combination before you commit a pour.
The technical insight
The performance comes from the shape of the molecule, not just its chemistry. Centrament Flow 500 is a high-molecular-weight PCE with an extended side-chain architecture: a long polymer backbone that anchors onto cement grains, carrying comb-like side chains that project outward and hold particles apart by steric repulsion. That geometry does two jobs at once. The backbone-to-side-chain ratio is tuned so the paste disperses to extreme fluidity yet keeps enough plastic viscosity to resist segregation, which is why self-compacting mixes can be produced without mandatory addition of a viscosity-modifying admixture. Because dispersion is so efficient, the mix reaches full flow at water-cement ratios as low as 0.22 to 0.32 for UHSC and UHPC, and 0.30 to 0.40 for SCC, translating into the 30 to 40% water reduction that drives both early strength and long-term durability. The trade-off of working so dry is that dosage runs higher than an everyday PCE and the polymer must be given time and energy to disperse fully, especially where silica fume is competing for the same admixture.
Where it is used
- Self-compacting concrete for heavily reinforced precast elements such as segmental box girders, architectural panels and congested columns
- Ultra-high-strength precast piles and foundation elements in the C80 to C100 range
- Ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC) for pedestrian bridges, blast-resistant elements and thin structural sections
- Reactive powder concrete and other very low water-cement, high-silica-fume mixes
- High-strength industrial floor overlays and repair toppings requiring flow plus early strength
- Densely reinforced cast-in-situ elements where full self-compaction removes the need for vibration
- Precast architectural concrete where surface finish depends on a fluid, void-free mix
- Silica-fume and GGBFS blended concretes where standard superplasticisers cannot reach target flow
Key advantages
- Very high water reduction of 30 to 40% at working dosage, supporting both high early and high ultimate strength
- Enables extremely low water-cement ratios, down to around 0.22, for UHSC and UHPC
- Produces self-compacting flow of 560 to 850 mm while maintaining cohesion and segregation resistance
- Often achieves SCC without a separate viscosity-modifying admixture, simplifying the mix design
- One admixture spans SCC, high-strength precast and UHPC, reducing the number of products a plant stocks
- Compatible with silica fume and GGBFS blends central to modern high-performance concrete
- Classifiable under IS 9103 as Type F, or Type G where retardation is used, for code-compliant specification
- Strong dispersion efficiency gives flowable mixes even in stiff, low-water formulations
Limitations & considerations
- Requires higher dosage than standard PCE superplasticisers because it is designed for very low water-cement ratios, adding to admixture cost per cubic metre
- It is a performance admixture for demanding SCC/UHSC/UHPC work, not an economical general-purpose plasticiser for routine M20 to M40 concrete
- Mandatory trial mixing is needed to confirm compatibility with your specific cement, silica fume and GGBFS before production
- Fresh concrete temperature must be managed in Indian summers, with dosage adjustment as ambient conditions rise
- Stiff ultra-high-strength mixes need extended mixing (typically 4 to 5 minutes) and silica fume pre-dispersion for full effect
- Over-dosing or mishandling low-water mixes can cause bleeding or loss of control, so it demands experienced batching
Selection & best practice
Treat Centrament Flow 500 as a mix-design tool, not a drop-in top-up. Always run a laboratory trial with your actual cement, silica fume and GGBFS before scaling to production, and start dosing near the lower end of the 0.8 to 2.0% by weight of cementitious range, working up to target flow. Add the admixture with the mixing water rather than to dry material, and pre-disperse silica fume so it does not starve the polymer. Give stiff, low-water mixes a full mixing cycle of around four to five minutes so the flow develops fully; short mixing is a common cause of apparent underperformance. In hot weather, control fresh concrete temperature and raise dosage roughly 0.1% for every 5 degrees C above 25 degrees C, and where steam curing is used, cap curing temperature at 65 degrees C to avoid delayed ettringite formation. Verify slump flow to EN 12350-8 on site and keep the trial dosage as your reference point.

How we position MC-Bauchemie Centrament Flow 500
Centrament Flow 500 is the specialist end of MC-Bauchemie’s admixture range and pairs naturally with the wider Centrament family we supply: add Centrament VMA where a gap-graded or highly fluid SCC needs extra segregation control, Centrament Stabi as a stabiliser for sensitive mixes, and Centrament Air where controlled air entrainment is specified. For very demanding ultra-high-performance work, MC-Bauchemie’s MC-PowerFlow PCE line is the sister technology to consider. Where a project is written around a different brand, Space Arc also supplies equivalent high-range PCE superplasticisers from Fosroc, Sika, Master Builders Solutions and STP, and our team can map the correct grade to your specification rather than force a like-for-like swap.
