What is it?

A grey, highly elastic polyolefin (FPO) membrane supplied in rolls, bonded to concrete on both flanks with a two-part epoxy adhesive (Dr. Fixit Tape Adhesive) so the tape itself spans the joint unbonded and free to stretch.

Where is it used?

Construction, expansion and connecting joints in water tanks, STPs, bridge decks, tunnels, precast panel junctions, below-ground retaining walls and any crack or joint expected to keep moving after handover.

Why use it?

It stretches over 800% and stays elastic across a wide temperature range, so it keeps a joint watertight through years of thermal and structural movement that would eventually crack a rigid sealant bead or coating.

How is it applied?

Substrate is mechanically abraded and dried, epoxy adhesive is trowelled on both sides of the joint over a foam backer rod, the tape is pressed on leaving its centre unbonded, a capping layer of adhesive seals the edges, roll overlaps are heat-welded with a 100 mm lap, and the system is cured for 7 days before backfilling or testing.

About Dr. Fixit Seal Tape

Dr. Fixit Seal Tape sits in a different bracket from the rollers-and-brush waterproofing coatings most people associate with the Dr. Fixit name. It’s a flexible polyolefin (FPO) membrane — the same broad material family used in below-grade waterproofing sheets — factory-slit into rolls in widths from 150 mm to 1000 mm and bonded to concrete with a dedicated two-part epoxy adhesive rather than any peel-and-stick backing. That distinction matters on site: contractors sometimes order it expecting a self-adhesive tape, only to discover the adhesive is a separately mixed component with its own pot life and mixing speed. Once understood, though, it’s a genuinely purpose-built system for joints that ordinary sealants struggle to keep sealed over time.

Pidilite files this SKU (product code W009) under its “Large Projects” technical library rather than the retail catalogue, which tells you who it’s really for — structural engineers and applicators handling water-retaining structures, infrastructure joints and precast work, not a homeowner patching a balcony crack. On the projects Space Arc executes across Delhi NCR and pan-India, it typically shows up at construction joints in underground water tanks and STPs, expansion joints on bridge decks and flyover approaches, and precast panel junctions where movement is designed in from day one. Because correct installation drives the outcome as much as the material itself, we supply and apply it as one package rather than selling the tape as a standalone item.

The technical insight

The engineering behind Dr. Fixit Seal Tape is less about the membrane chemistry and more about how it’s detailed on site. The centre of the tape is deliberately kept unbonded over the joint gap — achieved with a foam backer rod and a strip of masking tape removed just before installation — so that as the joint opens or closes, the tape behaves like a loose diaphragm stretching across the gap rather than a bonded skin trying to tear itself apart. That’s what the ≥800% elongation figure (EN 12311-2) is really buying you. Pidilite offers two build tiers: a 1.0 mm / ≥950 g/m² tape for routine movement joints, and a 2.0 mm / ≥1750 g/m² tape with roughly double the nail-shank tear resistance (400 N vs 200 N, EN 12310-1) for higher-traffic or higher-pressure situations. Roll overlaps are heat-welded with a 100 mm lap rather than just glued, which is what lets a long joint run stay continuous instead of relying on adhesive alone at every splice.

Where it is used

  • Construction and expansion joints in RCC water tanks, sumps and STPs
  • Bridge deck, flyover and elevated-corridor expansion joints
  • Tunnel segment and lining joints subject to ground movement
  • Expansion joints between precast concrete panels
  • Transition joints between rigid RCC sections and flexible waterproofing membranes
  • Below-ground retaining wall and basement raft construction joints
  • Drinking-water reservoir and other water-retaining structure joints
  • Repair of failed, cracked or leaking sealant-filled joints

Key advantages

  • ≥800% elongation keeps the seal intact through wide, repeated joint movement
  • Independently tested watertight at 60 kPa/24 hr and up to 400 kPa/72 hr (EN 1928)
  • No on-site chemical activation — installation is mechanical and repeatable
  • UV-stable and root-resistant, so it holds up on exposed terraces and planter joints
  • Heat-welded overlaps give a continuous membrane run instead of a chain of glued splices
  • Passes EN 1847 chemical resistance, useful in water- and effluent-treatment structures
  • Two thickness tiers (1 mm / 2 mm) let you match tear resistance to the joint’s duty
  • Backed by Pidilite’s large-projects technical support and Space Arc’s trained applicator team

Limitations & considerations

  • Not a peel-and-stick tape despite the name — it needs a separately mixed two-part epoxy adhesive with its own pot life
  • Substrate must be concrete at least 4 weeks old with under 4% moisture, so it can’t go on green concrete
  • Application is temperature-bound (5°C to 40°C) and installers must respect the adhesive’s open time
  • Correct backer-rod placement, centre de-bonding and heat-welding technique are skill-dependent; poor workmanship undermines the whole system
  • Exposed or trafficable joints under higher water pressure (above 1.5 bar, up to 3 bar) need extra metal-plate protection at one end
  • Costs meaningfully more per running metre than a conventional sealant-and-backer-rod joint, so it’s best reserved for genuinely high-movement or critical joints

Selection & best practice

Get the joint gap and expected movement range confirmed before ordering — it decides both the tape width (150-1000 mm) and whether the 1 mm or 2 mm tier is right. Insist on Dr. Fixit Tape Adhesive rather than a generic epoxy; mix it strictly to the TDS’s 200-300 RPM guidance and use it within pot life. Keep the tape’s centre unbonded over a foam backer rod using the masking-tape technique, heat-weld every overlap with a 100 mm lap, and don’t rush the 7-day cure before hydro-testing or backfilling. On exposed or trafficable joints, add the recommended metal edge-plate protection.

Frequently asked questions

Is Dr. Fixit Seal Tape a self-adhesive tape I can just press onto a joint?
No — despite the name, it’s bonded with a separate two-part epoxy adhesive (Dr. Fixit Tape Adhesive), not a peel-and-stick backing. The tape and adhesive are sold and applied together as one system.
What’s the real difference between the 1 mm and 2 mm tape?
Both meet the same elongation and watertightness figures, but the 2 mm / ≥1750 g/m² tape has roughly double the tear resistance (400 N vs 200 N) — specify it for higher-movement, trafficable or higher-pressure joints; the 1 mm tape suits routine construction and expansion joints.
Can this be applied on new concrete right after casting?
No. The technical data sheet calls for concrete at least 4 weeks old with under 4% moisture content — applying earlier risks poor adhesion as the slab continues to shrink and cure.
How wide a joint gap can it handle?
Tape width is selected based on the joint or crack width plus bond area on either side; for joints moving more than 20 mm, Dr. Fixit’s own guidance is to loop the tape into the gap rather than stretch it flat.
Do we need a professional applicator, or can our own site team install it?
We’d strongly recommend an authorised applicator. Getting the centre de-bond, backer-rod placement, adhesive mix ratio and heat-welded overlaps right is what separates a joint that stays watertight from one that fails at the first movement cycle — Space Arc’s teams are trained on this specific system.
Is it available as a standalone retail purchase, or only through a project order?
Pidilite lists it in its Large Projects technical library rather than general retail. It comes in 20 m rolls, 150-1000 mm wide, and pricing/availability is best confirmed through an authorised Dr. Fixit distributor or applicator like Space Arc rather than open-market listings, where quoted prices vary widely.

How we position Dr. Fixit Seal Tape

Seal Tape’s mandatory companion is Dr. Fixit Tape Adhesive — the two aren’t specified independently, so budget and order them together. For crack and joint work that doesn’t call for a full tape system, Dr. Fixit’s Crack X Shrinkfree and Pidiproof range handle general concrete repair and waterproofing additives, while Dr. Fixit All Seal covers routine sealant joints. Globally, the nearest functional analogue is Sika’s Sikadur-Combiflex FPO tape system; where a project calls for an embedded PVC waterstop rather than a surface-applied tape, Fosroc’s Supercast waterstop range is the more usual comparison, though it solves a different detailing problem than Seal Tape does.
