Dr. Fixit Torchshield MF 3160/4160
A torch-applied, mineral-finished APP bitumen membrane that waterproofs and protects exposed RCC roofs and terraces in one pass, with no separate topcoat needed.
What is it?
A polyester-reinforced APP modified bitumen membrane, factory-finished on top with slate-grey or black mineral chips and lined underneath with a heat-fusible polyethylene film.
Where is it used?
Exposed flat/low-slope RCC roofs, walkable and non-walkable terraces, shed and industrial roofs, and as the cap sheet over a base membrane in two-layer built-up roofing.
Why use it?
The mineral cap doubles as UV protection and a wear-resistant finish, so the roof needs no separate reflective or protective coat once the membrane is torched down.
How is it applied?
The primed deck (Dr. Fixit Torchshield Primer) is torch-welded with MF 3160 (3 mm) or 4160 (4 mm) rolls, keeping a continuous 5 mm bitumen bead at every 75 mm+ side lap and 150 mm+ end lap.
About Dr. Fixit Torchshield MF 3160/4160
Dr. Fixit Torchshield MF 3160/4160 sits at the finished end of Pidilite’s Torchshield range of APP modified bitumen membranes. Where the plain-faced Torchshield variants (AP, AM, P, AR) go underneath a screed, tiling, or another membrane, the MF adds a factory-bonded layer of natural slate-grey or black mineral chippings on top, turning the sheet itself into the exposed, weathering roof surface. “3160” and “4160” are simply the two thickness codes this cap sheet is sold in — a 3 mm and a 4 mm roll, both 1 m × 10 m — so a specifier can size up on higher-traffic decks without leaving the product family.
For Delhi NCR and pan-India rooftops, that matters because exposed terraces see summer surface temperatures well past 60°C and monsoon ponding that keeps a membrane wet for days. A torch-welded, mineral-capped sheet answers both fairly directly: fused laps don’t rely on an adhesive that can soften or lift under standing water, and the granule layer absorbs sun and foot traffic instead of the bitumen underneath ageing and going brittle. Space Arc applies Torchshield MF as a trained Dr. Fixit applicator, mainly on residential terraces, institutional roofs, and warehouse decks across the NCR.
The technical insight
The “MF” chemistry is APP (atactic polypropylene) modified bitumen rather than SBS — APP generally trades some low-temperature flexibility for a higher softening point, which is why this sheet is rated ≥150°C (ASTM E28), a genuinely relevant number against Indian rooftop surface temperatures in peak summer, and why laps don’t slump or bleed bitumen in the heat. The trade-off shows up in the cold-flexibility spec: EN-1109 confirms no cracking down to only 2°C, so this stays a warm-climate membrane rather than one suited to high-altitude sites. The 160 gsm polyester carrier supplies the mechanical strength — up to 700 N/5cm tensile and 300 N/5cm tear in the machine direction — while the mineral chips on top are a wear and UV layer, not a structural one.
Where it is used
- Exposed RCC flat and low-slope roofs, left as the finished surface
- Walkable terraces on residential and institutional buildings
- Non-walkable terraces and low-access roof decks
- Shed and industrial/warehouse roofing
- Prefabricated and precast roof structures
- Cap sheet over a base membrane in two-layer built-up roofing
- Refurbishment over sound existing bituminous or felt roofs
- Parapet upstands and roof penetration detailing
Key advantages
- Self-finished mineral surface removes the need for a separate reflective or protective topcoat
- ≥150°C softening point resists slump and bitumen bleed through peak Indian rooftop heat
- Cold-flexible to 2°C without cracking, useful across north India’s winter temperature swing
- 700 N/5cm tensile and 300 N/5cm tear strength from the 160 gsm polyester carrier
- Torch-welded laps tested to full sheet strength, cutting down on seam-related leaks
- Verified watertight at 5 bar/50 m hydrostatic head — useful margin on roofs that pond
- Choice of black or natural slate-grey finish to suit building look and heat load
- 36-month shelf life when stored upright indoors, away from heat and sun
Limitations & considerations
- Hot-works product — needs a trained torch crew, gas cylinders, and active fire watch, not an untrained mason
- Cannot be torched below 5°C or onto a damp/wet deck, limiting scheduling in winter fog or active monsoon
- A bitumen-based primer (ideally Dr. Fixit Torchshield Primer) is mandatory before laying, adding a step and drying wait
- Open-flame application near services, parapets, combustibles, or occupied floors below needs permits and real supervision
- Not itself a vehicular wearing course — podium decks or car-park roofs need a protective screed over it
- Delivered mineral-chip shade can vary batch to batch; Pidilite advises confirming the actual roll colour before large orders
Selection & best practice
Get the deck properly sloped to outlets first — Torchshield MF is watertight, but a badly sloped roof still ponds and shortens membrane life. Prime with Dr. Fixit Torchshield Primer and let it dry fully before torching. Keep the flame moving so the sheet just glistens, never to visible smoke, since overheating degrades the APP modifier right where the laps need it most. Hold side laps to 75 mm+ and end laps to 150 mm+, staggered between rows, with a continuous 5 mm bitumen bead pressed out at every joint. Detail upstands and penetrations separately with cut pieces rather than folding the main sheet, stagger stored rolls across the roof instead of stacking them, and flood- or hose-test the finished deck before handover.

Industry use cases
Residential terraces & housing societies
Exposed RCC terrace decks across Delhi NCR societies, where the mineral finish doubles as the final walking surface.
Industrial & warehouse roofing
Shed and factory roof decks, where large flat areas make a single-layer, self-finished membrane faster to lay than liquid systems.
Institutional & commercial buildings
Schools, hospitals, and office terrace refurbishments, where MF goes straight over a sound existing bituminous roof as a cap sheet.
Precast & prefabricated structures
Precast roof panels torch-applied to a primed surface, either at the casting yard or after erection on site.
Multi-layer built-up roofing
As the top/cap sheet over a plain-finish Torchshield base membrane on heavier-duty, high-risk roofing specifications.

How we position Dr. Fixit Torchshield MF 3160/4160
Torchshield MF is meant to be bought alongside Dr. Fixit Torchshield Primer, which the datasheet makes mandatory, and it sits in the same family as the plain-finish AP, AM, P, and AR membranes Space Arc specifies as the base layer underneath it on two-layer jobs. Where hot-works aren’t permitted on an occupied site, the practical Dr. Fixit alternative is a cold-applied route through the Raincoat or Pidiproof liquid-membrane range. Outside the Dr. Fixit stable, the closest torch-on competitors in India are STP Limited’s Bituflex SBS range and Fosroc’s Proofex Torchseal series — though Fosroc’s current catalogue through Space Arc centres on self-adhesive and plain sheet options (Proofex 300/3000) rather than a mineral-capped torch sheet, so specifiers set on a hot-applied mineral cap usually end up comparing Torchshield MF against STP rather than Fosroc.
