What is it?

A rubber-coated, 3-ply, fleece-lined elastic tape collar embedded into Dr. Fixit’s waterproofing coats to seal the gap where a pipe passes through a floor or wall.

Where is it used?

Bathroom, kitchen and laundry floors, terraces, balconies, swimming pools and water tank inlet/outlet points – wherever a pipe punches through a waterproofed slab or wall.

Why use it?

Pipe penetrations are the most common failure point in Indian bathroom and terrace waterproofing, since a rigid pipe and a cracking slab move differently; the collar’s stretch bridges that movement instead of letting the coating tear.

How is it applied?

Embedded wet-in-wet between the first and second coat of a Dr. Fixit waterproofing product, after the gap around the pipe is dressed with a non-shrink grout such as Pidigrout 10M.

About Dr. Fixit Pipe Collar

Ask a waterproofing contractor in Delhi NCR where a “fresh” job leaks first, and the answer is usually the same: around a pipe. A floor trap, a soil pipe, a tank overflow — wherever a rigid pipe cuts through a slab, two materials that move differently under load and age meet at a single joint. Dr. Fixit Pipe Collar, documented in Pidilite’s technical library as sheet W017, targets exactly that failure point. Unlike most Dr. Fixit products it isn’t a paint, membrane or compound — it’s a purpose-built accessory: a 3-ply, rubber-coated, fleece-lined elastic tape that wraps the pipe and gets sandwiched between two coats of whichever Dr. Fixit system is going around it.

What makes it worth stocking as its own item, rather than improvising with membrane offcuts or plumber’s tape, is the engineering in the tape: it stretches far more across its width than along its length, so it wraps a pipe tightly without splitting while staying strong along the joint. Pidilite backs this with published tensile and elongation data, not a marketing line. For Space Arc’s applicator teams and dealers across Delhi NCR and pan-India, it’s a small, low-cost item that closes a real gap in a full waterproofing scope — the kind of detail that stops a two-year-old bathroom needing a full re-do because nobody treated the pipe collar properly the first time.

The technical insight

The tape’s construction is direction-aware. Pidilite’s data (ISO 527-3:2018) shows longitudinal tensile strength of 10 N/mm² against just 2 N/mm² transverse, while elongation at ultimate load flips the other way — 70% longitudinal versus 300% transverse. In practice, it stretches generously around the pipe’s circumference without splitting, while staying taut along the joint so adhesion doesn’t thin out. It’s also rated above 1.5 bar hydrostatic pressure resistance (EN 1928:2000, Method B) — roughly a 15-metre water column — which is why Pidilite recommends it inside pools and water-retaining structures, not just dry terrace upstands. None of this replaces good detailing: it only performs to spec with a minimum 4mm of the stretchable zone against the pipe, and a second coat running at least 20mm past the collar edge — both specified in Pidilite’s method statement, and both easy for a rushed crew to skip.

Where it is used

  • Bathroom and toilet floor penetrations (soil, waste, vent pipes) ahead of tiling
  • Kitchen and laundry floor drains and waste pipe outlets in high-moisture fit-outs
  • Terrace and balcony rainwater downpipe outlets, ahead of the terrace coating
  • Swimming pool inlet, outlet and skimmer penetrations under ceramic tile finishes
  • Underground and overhead water tank inlet, outlet and overflow collars
  • Sunken slab plumbing sleeves in new-build apartments, before backfilling
  • Retrofit repair where seepage traces back to a pipe joint
  • Below-ground basement pipe penetrations alongside a membrane system

Key advantages

  • Purpose-engineered for pipe penetrations, not an improvised tape or foam wrap
  • Bonds wet-in-wet, curing collar and coating into one continuous seal
  • High transverse elongation (up to 300%) absorbs pipe-to-slab movement
  • Tested above 1.5 bar hydrostatic pressure – holds under standing water
  • Chemical-resistant construction, suited to chlorinated pools
  • Works across the entire Dr. Fixit range – one collar spec, every coating
  • Two sizes cover common Indian pipe diameters, quick to cut and fit
  • Rated for indoor/outdoor use, new construction and repair alike

Limitations & considerations

  • A system component, not a standalone waterproofer – needs a full coating build-up
  • Only two collar sizes on the data sheet; unusual penetrations need a workaround
  • Workmanship-sensitive – skipping the 20mm coat extension undoes the benefit
  • 12-month shelf life means stock must be rotated, not held long-term
  • Not a substitute for grouting the gap first with a product like Pidigrout 10M
  • Not scoped for large movement joints or big industrial pipe penetrations

Selection & best practice

Treat the collar as the last step of surface prep, not the first step of waterproofing. Grind the surface smooth, fill cracks with an appropriate filler, and dress the gap around the pipe with a non-shrink grout such as Pidigrout 10M first. Match collar size to pipe, lay the first coat, and embed the collar into it wet — by brush, roller, trowel or spatula — keeping at least 4mm of the stretchable portion against the pipe. Let it cure, apply the second coat at least 20mm past the collar edge, and continue the coating over the rest of the area per the base product’s data sheet. Keep the area off-limits to foot traffic until cured, and don’t crease the tape at corners — that’s usually where a “sealed” collar starts leaking eighteen months later.

Industry use cases

Residential bathroom renovation

Retrofitting around an existing soil/vent pipe in a Delhi NCR builder-floor leak repair, before re-waterproofing and re-tiling.

New apartment construction

Embedding at RCC slab pipe sleeves during sunken-bathroom waterproofing, before backfilling.

Terrace and balcony waterproofing

Sealing downpipe outlets before the terrace coating goes down, part of routine pre-monsoon scopes.

Swimming pool and water tank contracting

Sealing inlet/outlet penetrations in tiled pools and underground tanks.

Commercial kitchen and laundry fit-outs

Treating floor drain and waste pipe penetrations where standing water is routine, not occasional.

Frequently asked questions

Can it be used on its own, without any other waterproofing product?
No. Pidilite’s data sheet describes it as a system component embedded between two coats of a Dr. Fixit waterproofing product, not a stand-alone seal.
What pipe sizes does the collar fit?
The data sheet lists two collar sizes for the two most common pipe diameters on Indian sites. For anything outside those, check with Space Arc’s technical team before ordering.
Is it safe inside a swimming pool?
Yes – rated chemical-resistant and suitable for chlorinated water, and tested above 1.5 bar hydrostatic pressure, well beyond what a domestic pool exerts.
Do I need special tools to apply it?
No. It’s embedded into the wet first coat with a brush, roller, trowel or spatula, then covered by the second coat.
What’s the shelf life and storage requirement?
Twelve months from the date of manufacture, kept unopened, away from heat and flame, in a cool, dry place.
Does Space Arc supply the collar and the application?
Both. As an authorised Dr. Fixit distributor and applicator across Delhi NCR and pan-India, we supply the collar with the matching coating and put trained applicators on site where needed.

How we position Dr. Fixit Pipe Collar

Dr. Fixit Pipe Collar is meant to be bought alongside its family, not instead of it: Pidigrout 10M to dress the pipe gap first, and a coating such as Raincoat, Pidiproof LW+, Pidifin 2K or Newcoat as the system it’s embedded into. Pairing it with Fastflex or a kit like Bathseal Select rounds out crack-prone detailing near the penetration. Internationally, Fosroc offers comparable components – Nitoband and Proofex Top Hat collars – used with its Proofex and Nitoproof membranes, and a specifier already committed to a Fosroc system may reasonably stay within it. For most Indian bathroom, terrace and tank retrofit work, though, Dr. Fixit’s collar paired with its widely stocked coating range remains the more practical, readily available choice – and it’s what Space Arc stocks and applies as standard.
