Fosroc Auramix 222
A high-performance polycarboxylic ether (PCE) superplasticiser engineered for long workability retention, high water reduction and trouble-free pumping of modern concrete.
What is it?
A new-generation polycarboxylic ether (PCE) based high-range water-reducing admixture (superplasticiser) from Fosroc, formulated for high water reduction with extended slump retention.
Where is it used?
Ready-mix and site concrete needing long workability retention, pumpable concrete to greater heights, precast units, and mixes with SCM (fly ash/GGBS) replacement and low water-cement ratios.
Why use it?
It lets you cut water without losing flow, holding workability far longer than older naphthalene/melamine plasticisers so concrete stays placeable and pumpable while gaining strength and durability.
How is it applied?
Dosed into the mix water or added to the freshly batched concrete at the RMC plant or batching unit, typically 0.2-1.5 litres per 100 kg of cementitious material, with the optimum fixed by site trials.
About Fosroc Auramix 222
Fosroc Auramix 222 is a high-performance superplasticiser built on polycarboxylic ether (PCE) chemistry, sitting within Fosroc’s well-known Auramix family of concrete admixtures. It is designed for situations where two things matter at once: aggressive water reduction and the ability to keep concrete workable for a long time after batching. Unlike first- and second-generation superplasticisers (lignosulphonate, SNF/naphthalene or melamine types) that disperse cement mainly by electrostatic repulsion and lose slump quickly, the long lateral chains on the PCE molecule add a steric (physical) barrier between cement grains. That mechanism keeps particles separated for an extended period, which is exactly what long-haul ready-mix deliveries, congested reinforcement and tall pumping runs demand.
For an Indian contractor or RMC producer, the practical value of Auramix 222 is straightforward. You can hold the water-cement ratio low, recover the lost workability through the admixture rather than through extra water, and still have a mix that arrives at site flowable and pumpable. The result is concrete that is denser, less permeable and more durable, without paying for additional cement. Because the product is low in viscosity, it is well suited to pumping different grades of concrete to greater heights, a common requirement on the high-rise and infrastructure projects across Delhi NCR and the rest of the country.
Auramix 222 is positioned for long workability retention concrete, pumpable concrete, and mixes that use cement replacements (fly ash, GGBS) and run at low water-cement ratios. It is the kind of admixture specified on RMC supply contracts, precast yards and structural pours where slump life and pumpability are non-negotiable. Space Arc Engineering supplies it as part of the full Fosroc Auramix and Conplast admixture range, with technical support on selection and trial mixes.
The technical insight
The defining feature of Auramix 222 is its PCE backbone with grafted polyether side chains. In the first seconds of mixing, the charged backbone adsorbs onto the cement surface and creates an electrostatic charge, while the side chains physically hold cement grains apart (steric hindrance). This dual electrostatic-plus-steric action is why a PCE like Auramix 222 retains slump far longer than a naphthalene-based superplasticiser, which relies on charge alone and dissipates as cement hydrates. In service this translates to high water reduction at a given workability, or high flow at a given water content, lower permeability, better resistance to carbonation, and reduced drying shrinkage and creep because the hardened paste contains less water. Note that PCE admixtures are sensitive to dosage and to the fines/clay content of sand: a small overdose can cause retardation of set and segregation/bleeding, so the working dosage must always be locked in by trial using the actual project materials rather than copied from another mix. Auramix 222 is chloride-free, so it is safe for use in reinforced and prestressed concrete.
Where it is used
- Ready-mixed concrete needing long workability retention over extended transit times
- Pumpable concrete delivered to greater heights in high-rise and infrastructure work
- High-performance and high-strength structural concrete at low water-cement ratios
- Concrete incorporating SCM/cement replacements such as fly ash and GGBS
- Precast concrete production requiring consistent flow and good surface finish
- Congested or heavily reinforced sections where flowability and placeability are critical
- Mass and large-volume pours where workability must be maintained until placement is complete
Key advantages
- High water reduction without loss of workability, raising strength at no extra cement cost
- Extended slump retention that slows the workability loss typical of older superplasticisers
- Low viscosity suited to pumping a wide range of concrete grades to greater heights
- Lower water-cement ratio gives a denser, water-impermeable concrete with better carbonation resistance
- Reduced drying shrinkage and creep, lowering the risk of shrinkage cracking
- Chloride-free, so safe for reinforced and prestressed concrete
- Compatible with mixes using fly ash, GGBS and other cement replacements
- Improved durability and longer service life of the finished structure
Limitations & considerations
- Dosage-sensitive: overdosing can cause delayed set, segregation and bleeding, so trial mixes are essential
- Performance varies with cement source, SCM type and especially sand fines/clay content; cross-compatibility should be checked
- PCE admixtures can be less tolerant of high-fines or contaminated aggregates than older naphthalene types
- Optimum dosage must be established by site trial with the actual project materials, not assumed from another mix
- Not an air-entraining or waterproofing admixture on its own; pair with the appropriate Fosroc product where those properties are required
- Manufacturer’s published uniformity values (specific gravity, pH, chloride) can be tuned per customer/mix; always confirm against the batch MTC for QA records
Selection & best practice
Always establish the working dosage of Auramix 222 by laboratory and field trial using the project’s own cement, SCMs, sand and aggregates, then verify slump retention over the actual transit and placing time. Keep within the recommended range (typically 0.2-1.5 litres per 100 kg cementitious) and treat any increase cautiously, since small overdoses can retard set and trigger segregation. Add the admixture to the mix water or to the freshly batched concrete rather than onto dry cement, and do not mix it with other admixtures in the same dispenser unless compatibility is confirmed. For every supply, obtain the Manufacturer’s Test Certificate (MTC) and record the actual specific gravity, pH and chloride values for your QA file, as Fosroc tunes these uniformity parameters per product configuration. Store drums sealed, off the ground and within the recommended temperature range, and use within shelf life.

How we position Fosroc Auramix 222
Within the Fosroc range, Auramix 222 sits among the PCE superplasticisers alongside Auramix 200, Auramix 300/300 Plus, Auramix 350, 400, 450 and 500; the higher-numbered grades generally target higher performance, self-compacting or specialist precast roles, while Auramix 222 is pitched at long workability retention and pumpability for everyday high-grade structural and RMC work. Where a retarding effect and in-built viscosity control are needed for mass pours, Auramix 300 is the closer fit; for self-compacting concrete, look at Auramix 700 or the Conplast SP430 SRV type. Older or budget mixes may still use naphthalene-based superplasticisers such as Conplast SP430/SP500, which cost less but give shorter slump life. Against competitor brands, Auramix 222 competes directly with PCE superplasticisers like Sika ViscoCrete and Sikament, MBS (Master Builders Solutions) MasterGlenium, and the admixture lines from Dr. Fixit (Pidilite) and STP; the right choice usually comes down to trial-mix performance with your local materials, slump-retention targets and price.
