What is it?

A brown, water-based, chloride-free liquid admixture (specific gravity 1.308) designed for producing quality concrete at moderately low temperatures, down to about -5C.

Where is it used?

Winter and high-altitude concreting where slight daytime frost, overnight frost or cold spells threaten early-age concrete – North India winters, Himalayan and hill-state projects, cold-store and night-pour work.

Why use it?

It improves workability without extra water, lets you reduce water without losing workability, raises frost resistance and improves strengths, all while staying chloride-free so it is safe in reinforced concrete.

How is it applied?

Dosed at 2.5-5.0 litre per 100 kg cement, added to the mixing water as the last component before it goes into the mix; never pre-mixed with other admixtures.

About Fosroc Conplast Antifreeze

Conplast Antifreeze is Fosroc’s purpose-built admixture for the problem every site in a cold climate faces: concrete that simply will not behave when the temperature drops. As ambient and concrete temperatures fall towards freezing, cement hydration slows dramatically, setting is delayed, early strength gain stalls, and free water in the mix is at risk of freezing, expanding and disrupting the young matrix before it has the strength to resist it. The result can be soft surfaces, low early strengths, frost-damaged corners and edges, and pours that cannot be struck or loaded on schedule. Conplast Antifreeze is formulated to keep cold-weather concrete usable and sound through these conditions.\n\nThe product is a brown, water-based liquid that is added to the concrete during batching. Fosroc describes it as suitable for cold conditions such as slight daytime frost, expected overnight frost and expected cold periods, producing high-quality concrete at moderately low temperatures as low as -5C. It works on two fronts at once. First, it functions as a water-reducing/workability admixture – it lets the concrete be placed at lower water content without becoming harsh, or alternatively improves workability at a given water content. Lower free-water content is itself a defence against frost, because there is less freezable water in the mix and a denser, stronger paste. Second, it improves frost resistance and strength development so the concrete is better able to survive cold curing and reach usable strength sooner than an untreated control.\n\nCrucially for reinforced and structural work, Conplast Antifreeze is chloride free. Older or cheaper cold-weather accelerators were often calcium-chloride based, which carries a real risk of accelerating corrosion of embedded steel. By avoiding chlorides, this product can be used in RCC, prestressed and water-retaining structures without that liability. For Indian contractors, this matters most in the winter belt – Delhi NCR cold snaps, Punjab, Haryana and UP night temperatures, and the genuinely sub-zero conditions of Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal, Uttarakhand, Ladakh and the North-East hills – where winter pouring is unavoidable but the standard answer of simply waiting for warmer weather is not commercially viable.\n\nIt is worth being precise about the family. The global Conplast Antifreeze covered here is the brown, -5C product. Fosroc also markets a separate Conplast Antifreeze Nordic – a clear, nitrate-based admixture that lowers the freezing point of the mixing water and is rated down to about -15C for Scandinavian conditions. They are not the same product, and the colder Nordic rating should not be read across to the standard grade. For most Indian winter projects the standard Conplast Antifreeze, paired with sensible cold-weather practice, is the appropriate specification.

The technical insight

Conplast Antifreeze is best understood as a water-reducing, frost-protecting admixture rather than a true ‘antifreeze’ that guarantees concrete cannot freeze. The verified properties from the Fosroc data sheet are a brown liquid, specific gravity 1.308 at 25C, and pH 10.8 – an alkaline, fairly dense liquid consistent with a salt-bearing aqueous solution. Its protection is delivered through chemistry plus mix design: by reducing the free-water demand (the data sheet credits both ‘reduction in water without loss of workability’ and ‘improved workability without increased water’), it lowers the volume of freezable water and densifies the paste, while improving early strengths so the concrete crosses the critical strength threshold – generally taken as around 5 MPa, below which fresh concrete is vulnerable to permanent frost damage – faster than an untreated mix at the same temperature. The name ‘antifreeze’ should not be taken to mean the concrete is immune to freezing at any temperature; the rated envelope is moderately low temperatures down to about -5C, and the admixture supplements, rather than replaces, cold-weather measures such as heated mixing water, insulated formwork and protected curing. The chloride-free composition is the other key technical point: it removes the corrosion risk that chloride-based accelerators carry, making the product compatible with reinforced and prestressed concrete.

Where it is used

  • Winter RCC and structural concrete in North India – foundations, columns, beams and slabs poured during cold spells in Delhi NCR, Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh
  • High-altitude and hill-state projects in Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Ladakh, Sikkim and the North-East where overnight frost is routine
  • Night and early-morning concreting where ambient temperature drops below the safe window for normal placing
  • Infrastructure work – bridge decks, retaining walls, road and runway concrete – that must continue on schedule through the winter season
  • Precast and ready-mix concrete batching where consistent cold-weather performance and a chloride-free admixture are specified
  • Cold-store, refrigerated-warehouse and similar low-temperature environments where placed concrete cures in cool conditions
  • Repair and screed work during cold periods where delayed set and frost damage would otherwise compromise quality

Key advantages

  • Chloride free – safe for reinforced, prestressed and water-retaining structures, with no chloride-driven corrosion risk to embedded steel
  • Improves workability without adding water, easing placing and compaction in cold conditions
  • Allows water reduction without loss of workability, giving a denser, stronger, lower-permeability paste with less freezable water
  • Increases frost resistance of the fresh and early-age concrete during cold curing
  • Improves strengths, helping concrete reach safe early strength faster in low temperatures
  • Water-based and non-flammable, with no special fire precautions in storage or handling
  • Simple dosing – added to the mixing water as the last component, no specialist equipment required
  • Compatible with other Fosroc admixtures in the same mix (added separately, assessed by trial), so it slots into existing mix designs
  • Practical packaging (25 and 210 litre drums) and a 12-month shelf life suit both small sites and large batching operations

Limitations & considerations

  • Rated for moderately low temperatures down to about -5C only – it is not a substitute for full cold-weather measures and does not make concrete frost-proof at any temperature
  • The much lower -15C rating belongs to the separate Conplast Antifreeze Nordic (a different, nitrate-based, clear product) and must not be assumed for this grade
  • Does not replace good cold-weather practice – heated mixing water, insulated or covered formwork, protected curing and avoiding frozen aggregates are still required
  • Optimum dosage must be established by site trial mixes; the 2.5-5.0 l/100 kg range is indicative and exact quantity is determined experimentally for each case
  • When combined with other admixtures, the resultant concrete properties must be verified by trial – admixtures must be added separately and never pre-mixed
  • The brown liquid is alkaline (pH 10.8); skin and eye contact must be avoided and gloves and goggles worn
  • Store in dry conditions in the original unopened packing; shelf life is a minimum of 12 months and performance of old or improperly stored stock should not be assumed

Selection & best practice

Always run trial mixes with your actual cement, aggregates and target temperature before committing a dosage – start within the 2.5-5.0 litre per 100 kg cement range and confirm workability, set and early strength on site. Add Conplast Antifreeze to the mixing water and introduce it as the last component of the mix; do not pre-mix it with any other admixture, and where a second Fosroc admixture is used, dispense each separately and verify the combined result by trial. Treat the product as one part of a cold-weather regime, not the whole answer: use heated mixing water where needed, keep aggregates free of ice and frost, insulate or cover formwork, protect the placed concrete during curing, and do not strike forms until the concrete has gained adequate strength. Respect the -5C envelope – for genuinely colder conditions, consult Fosroc rather than over-dosing. Store drums sealed in dry conditions, use within the 12-month shelf life, and have operatives wear gloves and goggles when handling.

Frequently asked questions

What exactly is Fosroc Conplast Antifreeze and what does it do?
It is a brown, water-based, chloride-free liquid admixture for producing quality concrete at moderately low temperatures down to about -5C. It improves workability without adding water (or lets you reduce water without losing workability), increases frost resistance and improves strengths, so cold-weather concrete stays placeable and gains usable strength faster than an untreated mix.
How much Conplast Antifreeze should I add?
The recommended dosage is 2.5 to 5.0 litre per 100 kg of cement. The exact quantity should be established by trial mixes for your particular cement, aggregates and temperature – dosages outside this range can be used for special requirements, but in that case Fosroc should be consulted.
How is it added to the mix?
Add it to the mixing water and introduce it as the last component of the concrete mix. It must not be pre-mixed with other admixtures; where another Fosroc admixture is used, each is dosed separately and the combined result verified by trial. No specialist dispensing equipment is required.
Does it contain chloride – is it safe for reinforced concrete?
No, it is chloride free, so it does not attack reinforcement. That makes it suitable for RCC, prestressed and water-retaining structures, unlike older calcium-chloride-based cold-weather accelerators that carry a corrosion risk to embedded steel.
Can it protect concrete at any sub-zero temperature?
No. This grade is rated for moderately low temperatures down to about -5C and supplements, rather than replaces, cold-weather practice such as heated mixing water, insulated formwork and protected curing. The much colder -15C rating belongs to the separate Conplast Antifreeze Nordic, a different nitrate-based product, and should not be assumed for this grade.
What pack sizes and shelf life does it have?
It is supplied in 25 litre and 210 litre drums and has a minimum shelf life of 12 months when stored in dry conditions in its original unopened packing. It is water-based and non-flammable; handlers should wear gloves and goggles as it is alkaline (pH 10.8).

How we position Fosroc Conplast Antifreeze

Conplast Antifreeze sits in Fosroc’s cold-weather concreting line and is best chosen for moderately cold conditions (down to about -5C) where a chloride-free, water-reducing admixture is needed to keep winter pours workable and sound. Within the Fosroc range it overlaps with Conplast NC, a chloride-free accelerator that speeds early hydration and offsets the delaying effect of low temperatures – on genuinely cold jobs the two address related problems, and where accelerated set is the priority Conplast NC may be the better fit. For sub-zero Scandinavian-type conditions the related Conplast Antifreeze Nordic is rated lower (around -15C) but is a different, nitrate-based product. It also commonly works alongside the wider Conplast admixture family already on our site – the high-range water-reducer Conplast SP430, the air-entrainer Conplast AEA, the integral waterproofers Conplast WL and Conplast Crystalline – which can be combined (dosed separately and trial-verified) within a single cold-weather mix design. Against the broader Indian market, credible alternatives for cold-weather and accelerating admixtures include Sika (e.g. the SikaSet / Sika accelerator range), Master Builders Solutions (MasterSet / formerly BASF), STP, and integral-additive specialists such as Dr. Fixit; the right choice depends on the exact temperature envelope, structural requirement and whether your priority is workability, water reduction, accelerated set or frost protection.
