Fosroc Conplast MR293
A high-additive water-reducing and plasticising admixture that cuts mix water by up to 20%, lifting concrete strength, compactness and durability while holding workability even in hot weather.
What is it?
A synthetic-polymer water-reducing / plasticising concrete admixture from Fosroc’s Conplast MR (multi-range) family, formulated with a high active-additive content and conforming to EN 934-2 Table 2 as a water reducer / plasticiser.
Where is it used?
Ready-mixed and site-batched structural concrete — slabs, columns, rafts, beams, precast units and pumped concrete — where higher strength, lower permeability and reliable workability are needed, particularly in warm climates.
Why use it?
It reduces the mixing water for a given workability by up to 20%, which lowers the water-cement ratio to deliver higher compressive strength, a denser and more durable matrix and better surface finish, without sacrificing placing or pumping ease.
How is it applied?
Dispensed as a ready-to-use liquid at the batching plant, typically 0.3–1.0 litres per 100 kg of cementitious material, added with the mixing water (never onto dry cement); optimum dose confirmed by site trial.
About Fosroc Conplast MR293
Fosroc Conplast MR293 is a liquid water-reducing and plasticising admixture for concrete, part of Fosroc’s well-established Conplast MR (multi-range) series. It is built on modern synthetic-polymer chemistry with a deliberately high active-additive content, which is what lets it achieve strong water reduction — up to 20% depending on the dosage selected — while keeping concrete genuinely workable on site. In plain terms, MR293 lets a producer pull water out of the mix without the concrete going stiff, so the same slump is reached at a lower water-cement ratio. Because strength and durability in concrete are governed largely by that water-cement ratio, this single change drives a cascade of benefits: higher compressive strength at every age, a tighter pore structure that resists chloride and water ingress, fewer shrinkage cracks and a cleaner cast finish. The product is classed under EN 934-2 (Table 2) as a water reducer / plasticiser, the European standard that governs admixture performance and consistency. One characteristic Fosroc highlights for MR293 specifically is that its plasticising effect is retained in hot climates — the workability does not collapse the way some plasticisers do as ambient and concrete temperatures climb. That makes it a sensible choice for Indian conditions, where summer pours, long haul distances from RMC plants and high deck temperatures routinely punish a mix’s workability window. MR293 is a general-purpose structural admixture rather than a niche specialty product: it is the kind of plasticiser a ready-mix plant or a contractor reaches for as the everyday water-reducer behind durable, economical concrete. Note for specifiers: MR293 is a Fosroc product documented on Fosroc’s European (Spain / Fosroc Euco) range and certified to EN 934-2; where an Indian project requires an IS 9103-marked admixture, Space Arc can confirm the locally supplied equivalent and its IS conformity at the time of order.
The technical insight
The performance lever is the water-cement (w/c) ratio. By dispersing cement grains electrostatically and sterically, MR293’s polymer frees the water that would otherwise be trapped between flocculated particles, so the mix flows at a lower total water content. Cutting water by even 10–20% at constant cement content can raise 28-day compressive strength by a meaningful margin and sharply reduce capillary porosity — the route by which water, chlorides and sulphates attack reinforced concrete. Practically, a producer uses MR293 in one of three modes: (1) hold workability constant and reduce water to gain strength and durability; (2) hold w/c constant and gain a more workable, easily pumped and finished mix; or (3) hold both strength and workability and trim cement content for cost and lower embodied carbon. Because the Conplast MR series carries a low water-soluble chloride content (typically not more than 0.10%), it is suitable for reinforced and prestressed concrete where chloride limits are strict. As with all water reducers, the dose-response is non-linear near the upper end — over-dosing can cause set retardation or bleeding — so the optimum is always fixed by trial mix using the actual cement, aggregates, supplementary cementitious materials and target temperatures of the job, not by a generic table.
Where it is used
- Structural ready-mixed concrete for buildings, slabs, columns, rafts and beams
- High-strength and high-durability concrete requiring a low water-cement ratio
- Pumped and long-haul concrete needing retained workability, especially in hot weather
- Precast concrete elements where dense, high-quality surface finish matters
- Water-retaining and basement structures where reduced permeability is required
- Mass and structural pours where cement optimisation (cost / carbon) is a goal
Key advantages
- Up to 20% water reduction depending on dosage, lowering w/c ratio for higher strength
- Denser, less permeable concrete with improved durability against water and chloride ingress
- Plasticising effect retained in hot climates — workability holds for placing and pumping
- Improved surface finish, compactness and appearance of the cast concrete
- Low water-soluble chloride content (≤0.10%), suitable for reinforced and prestressed work
- Conforms to EN 934-2 Table 2 (water reducer / plasticiser) for consistent, certified performance
- Allows cement content optimisation for cost savings and reduced embodied carbon
- Chloride-free formulation does not promote corrosion of embedded steel
Limitations & considerations
- Optimum dosage must be established by trial mixes; over-dosing can cause retardation or bleeding
- It is a normal-range plasticiser — for very high water reduction or self-compacting concrete a Conplast SP / Structuro superplasticiser is the correct choice
- Performance varies with cement type, SCMs, aggregates and temperature; results are mix-specific
- Documented primarily on Fosroc’s European range to EN 934-2; IS 9103 conformity of the India-supplied equivalent should be confirmed at order
- Must be added to the mixing water, not dosed onto dry cement or after the concrete has stiffened
- Liquid admixture with a low freezing point (approx -3°C); protect from frost and store correctly
- Does not replace good mix design, curing or cover — it complements, not substitutes for, durable detailing
Selection & best practice
Always run laboratory and site trial mixes with the project’s actual cement, supplementary cementitious materials, aggregates and target ambient/concrete temperatures to fix the optimum dose within the 0.3–1.0 L per 100 kg cementitious range before locking the mix design. Add MR293 to the gauging water (or with the final portion of mix water) — never directly onto dry cement — and ensure adequate mixing time for full dispersion. When using it to reduce water, recheck slump and cohesion to avoid over-water reduction that harms finishing. Keep the admixture in sealed original containers, protected from frost and direct sun, and follow the SDS for handling and PPE. For elevated structural grades, durability-driven low-permeability concrete or self-compacting requirements, pair the mix-design review with Space Arc’s technical team so the right grade — MR293 versus a high-range Conplast SP superplasticiser — is specified, and confirm IS 9103 conformity of the locally supplied product for the project records.

How we position Fosroc Conplast MR293
Within the Fosroc admixture range, Conplast MR293 sits in the everyday water-reducing plasticiser tier alongside siblings such as Conplast MR289, MR285, MR276 and MR260 — products you would specify for routine structural concrete needing better strength, workability and durability. It is positioned below the high-range Conplast SP series and the Structuro superplasticiser range, which are the right choice when you need very high water reduction, flowing or self-compacting concrete. For projects that also require retardation, set acceleration, integral waterproofing or crystalline protection, MR293 pairs naturally with other Fosroc admixtures (for example Conplast retarders/accelerators, Conplast W/WL integral waterproofers or Conplast Crystalline). Against the wider Indian market, credible alternatives in the same normal water-reducer class include Sika’s Plastiment / Sikament admixtures, Master Builders Solutions (MBS) MasterPozzolith / MasterPolyheed plasticisers, and STP’s range; Dr. Fixit (Pidilite) is the more familiar name on the integral-waterproofing and repair side rather than for structural plasticisers. As an authorised Fosroc distributor and applicator across Delhi NCR and Pan-India, Space Arc Engineering supplies Conplast MR293 with mix-design and trial-mix support, and will confirm the correct grade and IS 9103 conformity of the India-supplied product for your specification before you commit.
