Fosroc Conplast SP420M
Chloride-free workability retention admixture that keeps ready-mix concrete pumpable and placeable through hot weather and long transit times.
What is it?
A chloride-free liquid admixture based on selected organic polymers, classified to ASTM C494 Type G (water-reducing and retarding), engineered specifically to slow the loss of workability in fresh concrete rather than simply boosting initial slump.
Where is it used?
Ready-mix concrete plants, pumped-concrete pours, and any project in Delhi NCR or across India where long haul distances or high ambient temperatures cause concrete to stiffen before placement and finishing.
Why use it?
It extends the working life of a batch so concrete arrives and discharges at target slump, reducing on-site water addition, cold joints, segregation and rejected loads, while allowing a lower water:cement ratio for better durability.
How is it applied?
Dosed by calibrated dispenser at 1.0 to 2.0 litres per 100 kg of cementitious material and added with the mixing water; optimum dosage and mix design are confirmed by site trial mixes before regular supply.
About Fosroc Conplast SP420M
Fosroc Conplast SP420M is a purpose-built workability retention admixture for concrete, supplied as a brown, water-dispersible liquid based on selected organic polymers. Unlike a conventional superplasticiser that is judged on the slump it produces at the mixer, SP420M is judged on what happens during the next 60 to 120 minutes: it is formulated to hold workability while the truck travels and waits, so concrete remains cohesive, pumpable and finishable at the point of placement. It is completely chloride free, making it safe for reinforced, prestressed and post-tensioned work where chloride-induced corrosion is a concern. Fosroc positions the product squarely at ready-mix supply chains and pumped pours, the two scenarios in Indian construction where slump loss is most expensive. In Delhi NCR summers and on long inter-city deliveries, a batch that left the plant at 200 mm slump can stiffen well below pumpable consistency by the time it reaches a high-rise pour. The traditional fix, adding water at site, quietly raises the water:cement ratio and erodes strength and durability. SP420M attacks the root cause instead. By dispersing fine cement particles more effectively and introducing a controlled degree of retardation and improved cohesion, it lets the original mixing water keep doing useful work for longer. The result is concrete that stays within its placing window without retempering, plus the option to design at a lower water:cement ratio for low-permeability, crack-resistant hardened concrete. For Space Arc Engineering clients, SP420M is the admixture to specify when the problem statement is not raw flow but the retention of that flow over time and temperature.
The technical insight
SP420M’s ASTM C494 Type G classification is the key to understanding it: Type G denotes a high-range water reducer AND retarder, so the polymer system is doing two jobs at once. The dispersion effect improves the efficiency of mixing water and supports a reduced water:cement ratio, while the built-in retardation deliberately slows the early stiffening that drives slump loss. This is why Fosroc instructs that the starting mix should already be a well-graded pumping mix above 200 mm slump; SP420M then preserves that workability rather than creating it from a harsh base mix. The retardation mechanism also explains the product’s overdose behaviour, which is important to brief site teams on. At roughly double the intended dosage, retardation increases sharply and air entrainment can rise, both of which delay set and can reduce strength if uncorrected. However, because the extra plasticising effect allows further water reduction, ultimate strength is generally maintained or improved provided that gain is actually taken and curing is sound. The corollary risk is segregation: if an overdose is allowed to simply raise slump without a matching water cut, a cohesive mix can bleed. The practical takeaway for a quality engineer is that SP420M rewards a tightly controlled dispenser and trial-validated dosage, and that good curing, by water spray or a Fosroc Concure membrane, is non-negotiable when retardation is in play. Its very low alkali contribution (typically under 72 g Na2O equivalent per litre) also makes it a sensible choice where alkali-aggregate reaction is being managed.
Where it is used
- Ready-mix concrete (RMC) supplied over long transit distances where slump must survive the haul
- Concreting in hot-weather conditions across North and Central India where rapid slump loss is common
- Pumped concrete for high-rise and infrastructure pours that need sustained cohesion and pumpability
- Reinforced and prestressed/post-tensioned concrete requiring a chloride-free admixture
- Flowing and high-workability mixes where bleed and segregation must be minimised
- Mixes incorporating PFA (fly ash), GGBFS (slag) or microsilica/silica fume as cement replacement
Key advantages
- Extends the working life of fresh concrete so it stays placeable through transit and hot weather
- Maintains workability without adding water at site, protecting the design water:cement ratio
- Improves cohesion to reduce bleed and segregation and to give a better surface finish
- Aids pumping by keeping the mix cohesive and reducing workability loss en route
- Allows a lower water:cement ratio for low-permeability, more durable concrete with reduced shrinkage cracking
- Chloride free to BS 5075, safe for reinforced, prestressed and post-tensioned structures
- Compatible with Ordinary Portland cements and with PFA, GGBFS and silica fume
- Low alkali contribution and water-based, non-flammable formulation
Limitations & considerations
- It is a retention admixture, not a primary high-slump superplasticiser; the base mix should already be a pumping mix above ~200 mm slump for best results
- Performance depends on local materials; poorly graded or cohesion-affecting sands can limit the retention benefit and may need a different Fosroc product or combination
- Overdosing causes excessive retardation and increased air entrainment, delaying set and potentially reducing strength if water reduction is not taken
- Optimum dosage and mix design must be established by site trials; it cannot be reliably fixed from the datasheet alone
- Requires a calibrated dispenser and disciplined batching; it must be added separately, never pre-blended with other admixtures
- Built-in retardation makes good curing essential, especially after any accidental overdose
- Has a freezing point near -3 degrees C and must be stored between 2 and 50 degrees C to preserve its 12-month shelf life
Selection & best practice
Begin with a cohesive pumping mix designed above 200 mm slump, then dose SP420M at the low end of the 1.0 to 2.0 litres per 100 kg cementitious range and run trial mixes with the actual cement, additions, aggregates and the worst-case ambient temperature expected on the job. Add the admixture through a calibrated dispenser with the mixing water, never dry-dose or pre-mix it with other admixtures, and lock the validated dosage into the batch ticket. Brief the RMC plant and site team that the goal is retained slump at discharge, not a higher slump at the plant, so they do not retemper with water on arrival. Where SP420M is combined with another Fosroc admixture, dose each separately and confirm the combined effect by trial mix. Maintain proper curing on every pour, by water spray or a Fosroc Concure curing membrane, particularly in hot weather and whenever retardation is being relied upon, and store drums between 2 and 50 degrees C away from frost.

Industry use cases
Ready-Mix Concrete (RMC)
Plants supplying sites 30 to 90 minutes away dose SP420M to ensure trucks discharge at target slump rather than arriving stiff, cutting rejected loads and water retempering.
High-Rise & Pumped Concrete
Maintains cohesion and pumpability for vertical pumping to upper floors, reducing line blockages and pump pressure caused by slump loss in transit and the rising line.
Hot-Weather Concreting
On Delhi NCR and northern-India summer pours, the retardation and retention offset rapid stiffening, extending the placing and finishing window.
Bridges & Prestressed Elements
Its chloride-free status makes it suitable for prestressed girders and post-tensioned decks where chloride limits are strict, while retained workability helps congested-reinforcement placement.
Infrastructure & Mass Pours
Used with fly ash or GGBFS blends in rafts and large pours to keep successive layers workable and cohesive, helping avoid cold joints during extended placement.

How we position Fosroc Conplast SP420M
Within the Fosroc Conplast admixture range, SP420M occupies the workability-retention niche rather than the raw water-reduction niche. It is most often paired in a specifier’s mind with Conplast SP430 and SP432MS (high-range superplasticisers for strength and water reduction) and with the Conplast SP400-series plasticisers; where SP430 buys strength and early gain, SP420M buys time and cohesion in transit, and on demanding hot-weather RMC jobs the two are sometimes used in complementary roles. For curing the resulting pours, Fosroc’s own Concure membranes are the natural companion. Against the wider Indian market, credible alternatives a procurement team will weigh include Sika’s slump-retention and ViscoCrete-family admixtures, BASF/Master Builders Solutions MasterPozzolith and MasterGlenium retention grades, and the admixture lines from Dr. Fixit (Pidilite) and STP/Sika-adjacent suppliers. SP420M’s distinct selling points in that field are its single-purpose retention focus, its chloride-free Type G credentials for prestressed work, and Fosroc’s established RMC technical-support network.
