Conplast WL Xtra
Enhanced Water-Resisting Admixture for Waterproof Concrete and Mortar
Authorized Project Distributor — Fosroc India | Space Arc Engineering, Ghaziabad
Product Overview
Conplast WL Xtra is an enhanced water-resisting admixture from Fosroc for producing reduced-permeability concrete and mortar in structures that must resist water penetration. The product is a development of the original Conplast WL formulation, providing improved performance particularly in mortar and render applications used for waterproof tanking of below-grade structures. Integral waterproofing admixtures of the Conplast WL Xtra type work by modifying the pore structure of the hardened cementitious matrix — reducing the size and continuity of the capillary pore network through which water permeates under hydrostatic pressure. The active components react with the free lime (calcium hydroxide) released during cement hydration to form insoluble calcium compounds that partially block the capillary pores, reducing the rate of water absorption. The product also imparts a slight water-repellent characteristic to the mortar surface, causing water to bead rather than be absorbed. Conplast WL Xtra is particularly widely used in the Indian construction industry for waterproofing brick masonry walls by incorporating the admixture in the external render coat — a cost-effective approach to water-resistant external rendering in the monsoon climate. It is also used in concrete for below-grade water-retaining structures, water tanks, swimming pools, and basement construction. The product is supplied in liquid form for ease of measurement and incorporation into the mixing water. Space Arc Engineering distributes Conplast WL Xtra for building, basement, and infrastructure waterproofing projects across Delhi NCR, Ghaziabad, and Northern India.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between Conplast WL Xtra and Fosroc Brushbond waterproofing systems for basements?
These represent two different approaches to basement waterproofing. Conplast WL Xtra is an integral admixture incorporated into the concrete or mortar during mixing — it works throughout the full depth of the concrete section by modifying the pore structure. Brushbond products (such as Brushbond TGP) are topically applied waterproof coatings applied to the surface of hardened concrete — they work by providing a barrier coating on the surface and penetrating into the near-surface zone. For critical below-grade waterproofing, Fosroc recommends a combined approach: waterproof admixture in the concrete mix plus a surface-applied waterproof membrane. Integral admixtures like Conplast WL Xtra are the first line of defence; surface membranes provide an additional backup.
Can Conplast WL Xtra be used in the mortar for waterproof rendering of external brick walls?
Yes. This is one of the most common applications of Conplast WL Xtra in India — incorporating the admixture in the sand-cement plaster render applied to external brick or block masonry walls to improve resistance to driving rain penetration in monsoon conditions. The admixture is added to the gauging water in the correct proportion and the mortar is mixed and applied in the normal way. The incorporation of Conplast WL Xtra reduces the water absorption of the render coat and makes it more resistant to capillary suction of rain water into the wall. For best results, the render should be applied in two coats on a properly prepared substrate and should be cured for at least 7 days.
Does Conplast WL Xtra make concrete completely waterproof?
No admixture makes concrete completely waterproof under all conditions. Conplast WL Xtra significantly reduces the water permeability of concrete and mortar, making it much more resistant to water penetration than untreated concrete. However, under very high hydrostatic heads or in severely cracked concrete, water will still penetrate. Truly waterproof (hydrostatic pressure-resistant) concrete requires a combination of good mix design (low water-cement ratio, adequate cement content), thorough compaction, proper curing, an appropriate admixture, and correct detailing at joints and penetrations. Conplast WL Xtra is one element of a complete waterproofing strategy, not a single-product waterproofing solution.
