Fosroc Conplast WP409
Chloride-free liquid integral waterproofing admixture that makes concrete and mortar water-repellent by cutting capillary absorption from within the mix.
What is it?
A chloride-free, liquid water-repellent (hydrophobic) mass admixture from Fosroc, dosed into the concrete or mortar mix to produce integrally waterproof, water-resistant concrete.
Where is it used?
Water-retaining and water-excluding structures such as basements, retaining and underground walls, water tanks, swimming pools, sewage and effluent works, channels, hydraulic structures and precast units.
Why use it?
It reduces capillary water absorption and makes the concrete water-repellent throughout the section, without affecting setting time and without adding calcium chloride that could threaten embedded steel.
How is it applied?
Added to the mix with the gauging water at 0.5-1.5% by weight of cement, then batched, placed and cured by normal good-concreting practice. It is an in-mix admixture, not a surface coating.
About Fosroc Conplast WP409
Fosroc Conplast WP409 is an integral waterproofing admixture, meaning it is dosed into concrete or mortar at the batching stage rather than applied to a hardened surface. Chemically it is a chloride-free, water-repellent (hydrophobic) liquid that disperses through the cementitious matrix and lines the fine capillary network of the hardened concrete. The result is concrete whose pore structure resists the passive uptake of water by capillary action, so the section behaves as a mass water-repellent body rather than a sponge that wicks moisture inward.
In Indian construction, where monsoon-driven hydrostatic pressure, high water tables in coastal and riverine cities, and humid micro-climates routinely attack below-grade and water-retaining structures, the value of an integral approach is straightforward: the waterproofing is part of the concrete itself and cannot be punctured by a follow-on trade, peeled at a lap, or skipped on a hidden face. WP409 belongs to the same Fosroc Conplast waterproofing family that Indian contractors already know through Conplast WL, WL Xtra and Conplast X421IC, but it is positioned specifically as a water-repellent, capillary-absorption-reducing additive rather than a plasticising or pore-blocking type.
Because it is chloride-free, WP409 avoids the long-term corrosion risk that older calcium-chloride-based “waterproofing compounds” carried for reinforced concrete. It is reported to work with all cements complying with the relevant cement standard (RC-08 in the European TDS), which in Indian terms covers the common OPC and blended PPC/PSC cements used on site. Critically for production planning, Fosroc states that WP409 leaves setting time essentially unchanged, so it can be introduced into an existing mix design without forcing a wholesale revision of formwork striking or finishing schedules.
WP409 is best understood as one tool in a waterproofing strategy, not a standalone guarantee. It improves the concrete’s own resistance to water movement and enhances durability, and on aggressive or below-grade work it is typically combined with sound mix design, adequate cover, proper compaction, joint treatment and, where hydrostatic head is significant, a membrane or crystalline system. Space Arc Engineering supplies WP409 as an authorised Fosroc distributor across Delhi NCR and Pan-India, with technical guidance on dosage trials and compatibility with the rest of the Fosroc system.
The technical insight
The mechanism is hydrophobic capillary lining rather than pore blocking. Water ingress into sound concrete is dominated by capillary suction through the interconnected fine-pore network; WP409 introduces water-repellent species that reduce the surface energy of these capillaries, lowering the capillary rise and the rate of water absorption without sealing the pores into a vapour-tight barrier. This matters in two ways for the engineer. First, because the admixture targets absorption rather than permeability under head, WP409 raises resistance to damp transmission, efflorescence and wicking, but it is not, by itself, a substitute for a tanking membrane where there is a sustained hydrostatic column. Second, being chloride-free (water-soluble Cl- reported at a low ceiling), it does not contribute to chloride-induced depassivation of reinforcement, so it is appropriate for structural and precast RCC where chloride-accelerated admixtures are prohibited by IS 456 durability provisions. The unchanged setting behaviour also tells you the chemistry is a water-repellency aid, not an accelerator or retarder, so it stacks cleanly on top of a separately chosen plasticiser or superplasticiser in the same mix.
Where it is used
- Basement raft, retaining and underground walls cast against earth or fill
- Water-retaining structures such as overhead and underground tanks, sumps and reservoirs
- Swimming pools and water features requiring water-resistant concrete and rendering
- Sewage treatment works, effluent channels and other water-conveying structures
- Hydraulic structures, culverts and water pipes in contact with water
- Precast concrete elements and panels where reduced water absorption improves durability
- Waterproof cement renders, plasters and screeds for damp-prone walls and floors
- External and below-grade RCC in high-water-table or high-rainfall regions of India
Key advantages
- Chloride-free, so it is safe for reinforced and prestressed concrete and complies with IS 456 limits on chloride from admixtures
- Integral protection distributed through the full concrete section, with no surface film to puncture, lap or miss
- Markedly reduces capillary water absorption and damp transmission, helping control efflorescence and wicking
- Leaves setting time essentially unchanged, so existing pour and finishing schedules need little adjustment
- Compatible with normal OPC and blended (PPC/PSC) cements and dosed simply with the gauging water
- Improves long-term durability of concrete and mortar in water-contact and humid environments
- Liquid form blends uniformly into the mix and is easy to dispense accurately at the batching plant
- Suitable for both site-batched concrete and factory precast production
Limitations & considerations
- It reduces capillary absorption but is not a tanking membrane; sustained hydrostatic head still needs a membrane or crystalline system
- Performance depends entirely on sound concrete: adequate cement content, low free water, full compaction and proper curing remain essential
- Does not seal construction joints, cracks, tie-holes or honeycombing, which must be detailed and treated separately
- An in-mix additive only, it cannot waterproof existing hardened concrete or be applied as a coating
- Correct dosage should be confirmed by trial mixes; the optimum within the 0.5-1.5% range varies with mix and cement
- Will not compensate for shrinkage or structural cracking, which must be controlled by mix design, reinforcement and joints
- Shelf life is limited to about 6 months, so stock should be rotated and stored sealed within the stated temperature band
Selection & best practice
Establish the dose by trial mix within the 0.5-1.5% by-weight-of-cement range, starting around the lower end and confirming workability and water absorption before scaling to production. Add WP409 to the concrete with the gauging (mixing) water, never to dry cement or aggregate, and mix thoroughly to disperse it uniformly. Keep the free water-cement ratio low and the cement content adequate for the exposure class; an admixture cannot rescue an over-wet or under-cemented mix. Ensure full compaction to eliminate honeycombing, and cure properly because capillary-absorption resistance only develops in well-hydrated, low-porosity concrete. Treat construction joints, movement joints and any tie-holes with the appropriate Fosroc waterstop, sealant or joint system, and where there is real hydrostatic head, pair WP409 with a membrane or crystalline waterproofing layer rather than relying on the admixture alone. Store containers sealed in a cool, dry place within the stated 5-30°C band and use within the 6-month shelf life. Always confirm the current dosage and compatibility figures against the latest Fosroc technical data sheet for your region before batching.

How we position Fosroc Conplast WP409
Within the Fosroc Conplast waterproofing range, WP409 sits as a chloride-free, water-repellent mass admixture focused on reducing capillary absorption, distinct from the better-known Indian integral compounds Conplast WL and Conplast WL Xtra and from the pore-blocking crystalline option Conplast Crystalline. Where the project faces real hydrostatic head, it is sensibly paired with a Fosroc membrane (such as the Brushbond or Proofex ranges) or a crystalline system rather than relied on alone. Against the wider market it competes with Sika WT and Sika-1 from Sika, Pidiproof LW+ from Dr. Fixit (Pidilite), and integral waterproofers from STP and MBS; honestly, the choice between them usually comes down to mix compatibility, chloride-free status, local availability and price rather than dramatic performance gaps, since all are in-mix absorption reducers governed by the same physics. The right specification almost always combines a good admixture with sound concrete, proper joints and, where needed, a membrane. As an authorised Fosroc distributor for Delhi NCR and Pan-India, Space Arc Engineering supplies WP409 with dosage-trial support and can cross-recommend the correct Fosroc product or complementary system for the exposure at hand.
