What is it?

A high-performance, one-part, water-based acrylic protective and decorative coating from Fosroc, engineered to slow carbonation of reinforced concrete and resist chloride and sulphate ingress.

Where is it used?

External and internal surfaces of concrete and masonry, multi-storey car parks, bridge structures, RCC facades and infrastructure across Delhi NCR and Pan-India.

Why use it?

It extends the service life of RCC by forming a breathable barrier to carbon dioxide and water-borne salts, the two main drivers of reinforcement corrosion, without trapping moisture inside the structure.

How is it applied?

Brush, roller or spray applied in two coats over a prepared, primed substrate to build the specified dry film thickness; tools clean up with water.

About Fosroc Dekguard ACE

Fosroc Dekguard ACE belongs to the Dekguard family of surface-protection coatings, Fosroc’s long-established range for protecting atmospherically exposed reinforced concrete. The “ACE” variant is positioned as a high-performance, environmentally friendly, one-part anti-carbonation coating that is water based, which makes it well suited to enclosed and occupied spaces such as basement car parks where solvent-based products are harder to apply safely.

Carbonation is the slow reaction between atmospheric carbon dioxide and the alkaline calcium hydroxide in concrete. As the carbonation front advances inward and reaches the reinforcement, the passivating alkaline environment that protects the steel breaks down, and corrosion begins. In India’s climate, this is accelerated by high humidity, urban pollution, coastal salt and freeze-free but thermally cycling conditions. Dekguard ACE works by laying down a continuous, low-permeability film that dramatically increases the resistance the carbon dioxide must overcome to reach the steel, effectively pushing the carbonation front outward and buying decades of additional service life.

Unlike a simple decorative paint, Dekguard ACE is a specified protective system. It is applied over a penetrating primer and built up to a controlled dry film thickness so that its barrier performance is engineered rather than incidental. At the same time it remains breathable, allowing water vapour already inside the concrete to escape rather than building up behind the film and causing blistering or delamination. It is also pigmented and available as a decorative finish, so a single product delivers both engineering protection and an architectural facade appearance, which is attractive to consultants and developers who want to consolidate scope.

For specifiers, the key idea is that Dekguard ACE is a “Principle 1 / Principle 2” surface-protection product in BS EN 1504-2 terms, controlling ingress and providing physical resistance, and it should be selected and detailed against project-specific exposure and a current local Technical Data Sheet rather than applied as a generic coat of paint.

The technical insight

The performance that matters in an anti-carbonation coating is its carbon dioxide diffusion resistance, normally expressed as an equivalent thickness of static air (the higher the metres of equivalent air, the better the CO2 barrier), paired with a low water-vapour diffusion resistance (low Sd) so the structure can still breathe. Across the Dekguard surface-protection family these two properties are deliberately balanced: published Fosroc data sheets for sibling products show CO2 equivalent-air values from roughly 100 to over 240 metres alongside water-vapour Sd values well under 5 metres, which is the Class 1 “breathable” band under EN ISO 7783. Dekguard ACE, as a water-based film-forming coating built to its specified dry film thickness, is engineered to sit in this same high-CO2-resistance, low-vapour-resistance window. The practical consequence is that achieving the specified total dry film thickness in two coats is not cosmetic, it is what delivers the rated CO2 barrier, so coverage rate and film build must be controlled on site and verified, not left to the applicator’s eye.

Where it is used

  • Anti-carbonation protective coating for external RCC facades, columns, beams and soffits of commercial and residential buildings
  • Internal and external coating of basement and multi-storey car parks, where its water base suits enclosed, ventilated spaces
  • Protective and decorative coating for bridge piers, abutments, parapets and other highway concrete
  • Surface protection of infrastructure such as flyovers, metro viaducts, water-retaining structure exteriors and industrial RCC
  • Refurbishment of carbonation-affected concrete as the final protective layer over a Renderoc-type patch-repair system
  • Decorative finishing of concrete and masonry where both architectural colour and durability protection are required

Key advantages

  • Slows carbonation and extends the service life of reinforced concrete by forming a high-resistance barrier to carbon dioxide
  • Resists chloride and sulphate ions plus a wide range of chemicals, protecting embedded steel from corrosion
  • Breathable and water-vapour permeable, so trapped moisture can escape and the coating resists blistering and delamination
  • Water based and one part, low odour and suitable for enclosed and occupied areas such as basement car parks
  • Good resistance to weathering, UV and ageing, retaining its protective and decorative properties over the long term
  • Decorative pigmented finish available in a range of colours, combining engineering protection with facade aesthetics
  • Easy site application by brush, roller or spray with simple water clean-up of tools and equipment

Limitations & considerations

  • Not a crack-bridging elastomeric coating; where active or thermal cracking up to several millimetres is expected, an elastomeric grade such as Dekguard Elastic or E2000 is more appropriate
  • Not designed for permanently submerged, ponded-water or below-grade tanking duty; specify a dedicated waterproofing or immersion-grade system instead
  • Not a trafficable deck coating; vehicle and pedestrian wearing surfaces require a car-park deck system, not Dekguard ACE
  • Barrier performance depends on achieving the specified dry film thickness in the correct number of coats, so film build must be controlled and checked on site
  • Substrate must be sound, clean, dry and properly primed; application over contaminated, friable or unprimed concrete will compromise adhesion and protection
  • Application is weather and temperature sensitive and should not proceed in high humidity, on damp substrates, or when rain or low temperatures are imminent
  • Exact published values and colour range can vary by country and revision, so the current local Fosroc TDS must be confirmed before specification

Selection & best practice

Treat Dekguard ACE as an engineered system, not just a coat of paint. Begin by repairing all spalled or carbonated concrete with a compatible Renderoc repair mortar and allow it to cure. Prepare the surface by grit blasting or equivalent to remove laitance, curing compounds, oil and biological growth, then fill blowholes and pinholes with a cementitious fairing coat so the film is unbroken. Apply the recommended Fosroc penetrating primer at the specified rate and let it dry fully. Then apply two full coats of Dekguard ACE to build the specified total dry film thickness, crossing the second coat at 90 degrees to the first to avoid pinholing, and keep a coating log of batch numbers, coverage and wet film thickness readings. Do not apply on damp substrates, in relative humidity above about 90 percent, or where rain or low temperatures are expected within the curing window. Always work to the current project-specific Technical Data Sheet and conduct trial areas when overcoating existing paints.

Surface protection of metro viaducts, flyovers and elevated corridors where carbonation and chloride attack threaten long-design-life reinforced concrete.

Concrete repair and refurbishment

Specified as the final protective overcoat in a repair scheme, applied over Renderoc patch repairs to re-protect carbonation-damaged concrete and unify the appearance.

Coastal and industrial structures

Protection of RCC in marine-influenced and polluted industrial atmospheres where combined CO2 and chloride exposure accelerates reinforcement corrosion.

Frequently asked questions

Is Fosroc Dekguard ACE a real product?
Yes. Dekguard ACE is listed on Fosroc’s official website as a high-performance, anti-carbonation, environmentally friendly, one-part water-based protective and decorative coating for concrete and masonry, car parks and bridge structures. It sits within Fosroc’s established Dekguard surface-protection range.
What does Dekguard ACE actually protect against?
Its primary job is anti-carbonation protection, slowing the ingress of atmospheric carbon dioxide that would otherwise depassivate and corrode the reinforcing steel. It also resists chloride and sulphate ions and a range of chemicals, and it weathers well under UV and ageing while remaining breathable.
How is Dekguard ACE different from Dekguard S and Dekguard Elastic?
Dekguard ACE is a water-based anti-carbonation coating well suited to enclosed areas such as car parks. Dekguard S is a solvent-based aliphatic acrylic with very high CO2 resistance for exposed and marine structures, while Dekguard Elastic and E2000 are elastomeric coatings that bridge cracks. Choose ACE for breathable anti-carbonation duty, Elastic or E2000 where the substrate is likely to crack, and S where a solvent-borne high-barrier finish is preferred.
How many coats are needed and how is it applied?
It is applied as a system: a penetrating primer followed by two full coats of Dekguard ACE, built to the specified total dry film thickness. It can be applied by brush, roller or spray, and tools clean up with water. Achieving the correct film build in two coats is what delivers the rated carbon dioxide barrier, so coverage should be controlled and checked on site.
Can Dekguard ACE be used on a car park deck or a water tank?
No. Dekguard ACE is a wall, column, soffit and facade protective coating, not a trafficable deck system and not an immersion-grade tanking product. For vehicle decks use a dedicated car-park deck coating, and for permanently wet or submerged surfaces use a suitable waterproofing or immersion-grade system.
Is Dekguard ACE suitable for Indian conditions and where can I buy it?
Yes. Its water base, breathability and resistance to CO2 and chlorides suit India’s humid, polluted and coastal environments, and the low odour makes it practical for occupied basements and car parks. Space Arc Engineering supplies and applies Fosroc Dekguard ACE as an authorised Fosroc distributor and applicator across Delhi NCR and Pan-India, and can confirm the current pack sizes, colours and project-specific Technical Data Sheet.

How we position Fosroc Dekguard ACE

Within Fosroc’s own range, Dekguard ACE is the breathable, water-based anti-carbonation member of the Dekguard surface-protection family. It pairs naturally with Fosroc’s Renderoc concrete-repair mortars and Nitoprime/Dekguard primers as the protective topcoat in a complete repair-and-protect specification. Where the substrate is sound and the requirement is a breathable anti-carbonation facade or car-park coating, ACE is the natural choice; where active or thermal cracking is expected, the elastomeric Dekguard Elastic or Dekguard E2000 are the better-matched siblings, and where a solvent-borne high-barrier aliphatic finish is preferred for exposed marine structures, Dekguard S is the alternative. Against competitor systems commonly specified in India, Dekguard ACE competes with Sika’s anti-carbonation coatings such as Sikagard-550 W Elastic and Sikagard-680 S, with MBS (MYK Saint-Gobain) anti-carbonation and protective coatings, with Dr. Fixit’s protective and anti-carbonation range from Pidilite, and with STP/Bostik protective coatings. Selection between these should be driven by the project’s exposure class, required CO2 and water-vapour values, crack-bridging needs and applicator familiarity, and verified against each manufacturer’s current Technical Data Sheet rather than on brand alone. Space Arc Engineering, as an authorised Fosroc distributor and applicator, can advise on the right Dekguard grade and supply it with application support across Delhi NCR and Pan-India.
