What is it?

A single-component, water-based impregnation and glaze for concrete, based on an acrylic copolymer and siloxane blend, that penetrates and seals the surface to block carbon dioxide, chloride ions and water while remaining vapour-permeable. It complies with EN 1504-2 as a surface-protection (impregnation) product.

Where is it used?

Reinforced concrete on multi-storey car parks, office and industrial buildings, tunnels, bridges, water-retaining structures and facades — both new construction and as part of a Renderoc repair and protection scheme.

Why use it?

It is a near-invisible, colourless treatment that extends the service life of RC structures by slowing carbonation and chloride-driven rebar corrosion, without changing the natural concrete appearance and without trapping moisture inside the slab.

How is it applied?

Applied to clean, sound, dry concrete by brush, roller or airless spray at roughly 4 m2/litre per coat — two coats as a self-finish, or one to two coats when used as the primer beneath Dekguard Elastic or Dekguard E2000.

About Fosroc Dekguard CP

Fosroc Dekguard CP is a clear, water-based protective impregnation engineered to defend reinforced concrete against the two mechanisms that quietly destroy it in Indian conditions: carbonation and chloride attack. Chemically it is a single-component blend of acrylic copolymer and siloxane in a water carrier, supplied ready to use straight from the can. Rather than sitting purely on the surface like a thick paint film, it penetrates the outer skin of the concrete and forms a low-viscosity glaze, leaving the original texture and colour of the substrate essentially unchanged — which is why specifiers reach for it on exposed-concrete facades and architectural finishes where a coloured coating would be unacceptable.

The core job of Dekguard CP is to interrupt the corrosion cycle of embedded steel. Atmospheric carbon dioxide reacts with the alkaline cement matrix over years, dropping the pore-water pH and stripping the passive film that protects the reinforcement; chloride ions from coastal air, de-icing salts or contaminated aggregates do the same job far faster. By dramatically reducing the diffusion of CO2, chlorides, oxygen and liquid water into the cover concrete, Dekguard CP keeps the steel passive and pushes back the onset of cracking, spalling and delamination. Critically, it does this while remaining breathable — water vapour can still escape from inside the structure, so the slab is not sealed wet and blistering or osmotic failure is avoided. It is certified to EN 1504-2, the European standard governing surface-protection systems for concrete, under the impregnation principle.

For Indian contractors and consultants, the product earns its place in two distinct roles. As a stand-alone clear treatment it weatherproofs and protects fair-faced concrete, car-park decks and structural members. Equally important, it is the recommended primer beneath Fosroc Dekguard Elastic and Dekguard E2000, and a recognised component of the Renderoc concrete-repair system — so on a typical patch-repair-and-protect contract it bridges the repair mortar and the decorative anti-carbonation topcoat into one warranted scheme. Space Arc Engineering supplies and applies Dekguard CP as an authorised Fosroc distributor and applicator across Delhi NCR and Pan-India, with site-specific method statements for each substrate condition.

The technical insight

The performance of Dekguard CP comes from its hybrid chemistry rather than film thickness. The siloxane fraction migrates into the capillary pores and lines them with a hydrophobic layer, so liquid water and dissolved chlorides are repelled at the pore walls, while the acrylic copolymer forms a continuous, CO2-resistant glaze across the surface that lowers carbon-dioxide diffusion. The result is a low-build treatment — typically around 17% volume solids giving a minimum dry-film thickness in the order of 50 microns over two coats — that protects without behaving like a vapour-tight membrane. This is the key distinction engineers must hold onto when specifying: Dekguard CP is an impregnation/glaze, not a high-build elastomeric. It will not bridge moving cracks, and where dynamic crack-accommodation is required the slab should carry Dekguard Elastic or E2000 over Dekguard CP as primer. Coverage of about 4 m2/litre per coat is a guideline for smooth, sound concrete; porous, rough or weathered substrates absorb more material and need a trial area to fix the true rate. Substrate moisture and temperature govern success — application is limited to a substrate temperature window of roughly +5°C to +25°C, with the second coat following after the first has dried (about 2 to 4 hours at 20°C and 65% RH). In Indian summers this temperature ceiling matters: on a south-facing deck at midday the concrete can easily exceed 25°C, so application is best scheduled for early morning or evening to avoid flash-drying and poor penetration.

Where it is used

  • Anti-carbonation protection of reinforced-concrete columns, beams and soffits in commercial and industrial buildings
  • Clear weatherproofing of fair-faced and architectural exposed concrete where appearance must be preserved
  • Protection of multi-storey and basement car-park decks against carbonation and chloride-laden run-off
  • Bridge piers, decks, parapets and tunnel linings exposed to traffic spray, carbonation and aggressive atmospheres
  • Priming coat beneath Fosroc Dekguard Elastic or Dekguard E2000 in crack-accommodating protective schemes
  • Surface protection within Renderoc patch-repair systems on corrosion-damaged RC structures
  • Coastal and marine-zone concrete subject to chloride ingress and high humidity
  • New-build durability enhancement specified for design service-life extension of RC frames

Key advantages

  • Single-component and water-based — ready to use, low odour, easier site handling and clean-up with no on-site mixing
  • Clear and colourless — protects without altering the natural concrete finish, ideal for fair-faced architecture
  • Vapour-permeable (breathable) — lets trapped moisture escape, avoiding blistering and osmotic failure
  • Resists carbonation (CO2), chloride-ion ingress, oxygen and water penetration in one treatment
  • EN 1504-2 compliant as a surface-protection impregnation product
  • Doubles as the recommended primer for Dekguard Elastic and Dekguard E2000 — one warranted Fosroc system
  • Compatible with the Renderoc repair range, simplifying repair-and-protect specifications
  • Applies by brush, roller or airless spray, suiting both small repairs and large deck areas

Limitations & considerations

  • Not crack-bridging — being a low-build impregnation/glaze it cannot accommodate moving or live cracks; use Dekguard Elastic or E2000 over it where flexibility is needed
  • Narrow application window — substrate must be between roughly +5°C and +25°C, which constrains midday summer application in much of India
  • Requires a clean, sound, dry substrate — laitance, dust, oil, curing compounds and ponded water must be removed first
  • Coverage of ~4 m2/litre per coat is substrate-dependent; porous or rough concrete consumes more material than estimates suggest
  • Not formulated for permanent immersion or heavily abraded trafficked surfaces without an appropriate topcoat or wearing system
  • Rain within about 2 hours of application at 20°C, or windy conditions, can ruin the freshly applied film
  • Supplied only in 10-litre packs in many markets, with limited shade/finish options as it is essentially clear

Selection & best practice

Begin with substrate assessment: the concrete must be at least 28 days old (or as advised for repair mortars), structurally sound and free of laitance, dust, oil, curing membranes and existing coatings. Grit-blast, water-jet or wire-brush as needed, make good any spalling with the appropriate Renderoc mortar, and allow it to cure before priming. Confirm the surface is dry and that substrate temperature sits within +5°C to +25°C — in Delhi NCR summers, schedule work for early morning or late evening. Apply a uniform first coat by brush, roller or airless spray at about 4 m2/litre, then a second coat after the first has dried (typically 2-4 hours at 20°C / 65% RH); always prove the real coverage and finish on a representative trial patch first, since porous concrete drinks more product. When Dekguard CP is the primer for Dekguard Elastic or E2000, follow the system overcoating intervals so the decorative topcoat bonds correctly. Protect freshly coated areas from rain for at least a couple of hours and avoid application in windy or dusty conditions. Store the sealed 10-litre packs in a cool, dry, shaded place and use within the 12-month shelf life. Always work to the current Fosroc TDS and your project method statement — Space Arc can issue both.

Frequently asked questions

Is Fosroc Dekguard CP an anti-carbonation coating?
Yes. Dekguard CP is a clear, water-based acrylic-siloxane impregnation that significantly reduces carbon-dioxide (CO2) diffusion into concrete, which is what causes carbonation and the loss of rebar passivity. It also resists chloride-ion and water ingress while remaining vapour-permeable, and is certified to EN 1504-2 as an impregnation-type surface-protection product.
What is the coverage of Dekguard CP?
As a guideline it covers roughly 4 m2 per litre per coat on smooth, sound concrete. Porous, rough or weathered substrates absorb more, so always confirm the real consumption on a trial area before ordering bulk quantities for a project.
How many coats are needed and how long between them?
For a clear self-finish, apply two coats. When Dekguard CP is used as the primer for Dekguard Elastic or Dekguard E2000, one or two coats are applied as required. The recoat interval is typically 2 to 4 hours at 20°C and 65% relative humidity; allow the first coat to dry before applying the next.
Will Dekguard CP change the appearance of the concrete?
No. It is essentially clear and colourless and penetrates the surface as a glaze, so the natural texture and colour of fair-faced or architectural concrete are preserved. That is its main advantage over coloured anti-carbonation paints such as Dekguard S or Dekguard Elastic.
Can Dekguard CP bridge cracks in concrete?
No. It is a low-build impregnation, not an elastomeric membrane, so it cannot bridge moving or live cracks. Where dynamic crack-accommodation is required, use Dekguard CP as the primer and apply a flexible topcoat such as Dekguard Elastic or Dekguard E2000 over it.
What surface preparation and conditions does it need?
The concrete must be clean, sound and dry, free of laitance, dust, oil, curing compounds and ponded water; spalled areas should be reinstated with a suitable Renderoc mortar first. Apply only when the substrate temperature is between about +5°C and +25°C, and protect the fresh film from rain for a couple of hours — in Indian summers this usually means early-morning or evening application.

How we position Fosroc Dekguard CP

Within the Fosroc range, Dekguard CP sits at the clear, breathable end of the Dekguard family: where Dekguard S and Dekguard Elastic are pigmented, higher-build anti-carbonation coatings that change the surface appearance and (in Elastic’s case) bridge cracks, Dekguard CP is the invisible impregnation chosen when the natural concrete look must be kept or when a penetrating primer is needed beneath those topcoats. It pairs naturally with the Renderoc repair mortars and Nitoprime/Nitobond ranges on a typical repair-and-protect contract, and with Dekguard E2000 for heavy-duty crack-accommodating protection. Against the wider Indian market, credible alternatives a consultant might evaluate include Sika’s anti-carbonation and Sikagard surface-protection range, MBS (MYK) protective coatings, Dr. Fixit’s protective and waterproofing coatings, and STP’s structure-protection products — each offering EN 1504-2-class options. The right choice depends on whether the specification demands a clear penetrating impregnation (Dekguard CP’s strength), a pigmented decorative anti-carbonation film, or a crack-bridging elastomeric. As an authorised Fosroc distributor and applicator, Space Arc Engineering can specify Dekguard CP correctly against the substrate condition and exposure, supply genuine 10-litre packs, and execute application with method statements across Delhi NCR and Pan-India.
