Fosroc Nitobond PC20
Fast-set two-pack epoxy jointing adhesive for segmental bridges, precast units and stone masonry joints — applied 5°C to 20°C, no primer, FIP-compliant.
What is it?
A two-pack, solvent-free, thixotropic epoxy jointing adhesive — the fast-set grade of the Fosroc Nitobond PC range, formulated for cooler-weather application between 5°C and 20°C.
Where is it used?
Segmental bridge construction (match-cast precast segments), precast concrete unit assembly, steel-to-concrete joints and structural stone masonry pointing, where a load-bearing, water-resistant glue line is required.
Why use it?
It creates a structural, water-resistant bonded joint between mating concrete faces, develops strength fast (>40 N/mm² compressive at 24 hours), tolerates damp surfaces, and needs no primer — keeping segment-erection cycles short on site.
How is it applied?
Grit-blast and align the faces, mix the pre-weighed white base with the black hardener to a uniform grey, spread on both surfaces with a serrated trowel, and close the joint within the 60-minute open time at 20°C, applying jointing pressure.
About Fosroc Nitobond PC20
Fosroc Nitobond PC20 is the fast-setting grade within the Nitobond PC family — a two-pack, solvent-free epoxy resin adhesive engineered specifically for jointing precast and segmental concrete elements rather than as a general slurry bonding agent. It is supplied as a white base and a black hardener in pre-weighed quantities, which are mixed on site to a uniform grey, thixotropic paste. The thixotropy is deliberate: it lets the adhesive be buttered onto vertical and inclined precast faces with a serrated trowel without slumping, then squeezed to a thin, continuous glue line when the segments are drawn together. Within the range, the suffix denotes the temperature window the hardener is balanced for — PC20 is the fast-set version intended for application from 5°C to 20°C, with PC30 (15°C–30°C) and PC40 (25°C–40°C) covering warmer conditions. For Indian projects, this means PC20 is the grade to specify for winter and early-morning concreting windows in North India, hill-station work, and cold-store or basement environments where ambient and substrate temperatures stay low. Unlike the more familiar Nitobond EP and Nitobond SBR — which are brush- or roller-applied bonding bridges between old and new concrete — Nitobond PC20 is a structural jointing adhesive: the bonded interface itself carries load and resists water ingress. It is most associated with match-cast segmental bridge decks and piers, where each segment is glued to its neighbour, and with the assembly of heavy precast units. Because it is solvent-free, it can be used in confined and enclosed spaces with less concern over vapour, and it bonds reliably to damp (though not running-wet) substrates, which is valuable in monsoon-affected and high-humidity Indian site conditions. The product conforms to the FIP (Fédération Internationale de la Précontrainte) specifications for segmental jointing adhesives, the recognised European benchmark for this class of material.
The technical insight
The defining technical feature of Nitobond PC20 is that it is a load-transferring epoxy glue line, not a primer or scratch coat — so its performance is judged by squeezability, open time and cured shear, not by overcoat windows. Squeezability exceeds 3000 mm² (FIP 5.4), meaning a fixed bead spreads thin under jointing pressure to fill the match-cast interface fully, which is what guarantees a continuous, void-free, water-resistant joint. Mechanically, the cured adhesive reaches >40 N/mm² compressive strength at 24 hours and >75 N/mm² at 7 days (FIP 5.6), and develops a shear strength of around 13 N/mm² (FIP 5.15). Critically, in tensile bending the failure plane is in the concrete, not the glue line (FIP 5.14) — the bond is stronger than the parent concrete, which is the acceptance criterion for structural segmental adhesives. The mixed material has a specific gravity of roughly 1.60–1.65 at 30°C. The fast-set chemistry gives a usable pot life of about 30 minutes and an open (assembly) time of about 60 minutes at 20°C for a 100 g mass; note that both shorten as temperature rises and as mixed quantity increases, because the exotherm self-accelerates — which is precisely why the range is split into temperature-specific grades rather than sold as one universal product.
Where it is used
- Match-cast segmental bridge and viaduct construction — gluing precast deck and pier segments to form continuous, water-resistant structural joints
- Assembly and jointing of heavy precast concrete units where the bonded interface must carry load
- Steel-to-concrete jointing where a tolerant, structural epoxy bond is required
- Structural pointing of stone masonry joints to restore and retain integrity in heritage and repair work
- Cold-weather and early-morning precast jointing in North Indian winters, hill regions and cold-store / basement environments (5°C–20°C window)
- Enclosed or poorly ventilated jointing locations where a solvent-free adhesive is preferred
Key advantages
- Fast cure with early strength gain (>40 N/mm² compressive at 24 hours) keeps segmental erection cycles short
- Excellent squeezability (>3000 mm², FIP 5.4) gives a thin, continuous, void-free glue line under jointing pressure
- Structural bond — tensile bending failure occurs in the concrete, not the adhesive (FIP 5.14)
- Tolerant of damp substrates, useful in monsoon and high-humidity Indian site conditions
- No primer required and pre-weighed base/hardener packs reduce on-site mixing error
- Solvent-free, so safer for use in confined and enclosed jointing locations
- Thixotropic paste stays put on vertical and inclined precast faces without slumping
- Conforms to FIP specifications for segmental jointing adhesives
Limitations & considerations
- Temperature-specific: PC20 is balanced for 5°C–20°C only — above ~20°C use PC30 or PC40, or the pot life and open time collapse
- Short working window — roughly 30-minute pot life and 60-minute open time at 20°C; both shorten with larger mixed masses and rising temperature
- It is a jointing/structural adhesive, not a slurry bonding bridge — for new-to-old concrete bonding use Nitobond EP or Nitobond SBR instead
- Requires thorough surface preparation (grit blasting recommended) and good segment alignment; a dry run is advised before each application
- Tolerant of damp but not running-wet or contaminated surfaces — free water, oil, grease, laitance and dust must be removed
- Two-component epoxy: incorrect ratio, under-mixing or exceeding open time compromises the joint
- Fixed temperature grades mean the correct grade must be matched to actual site/substrate temperature, not just air temperature
Selection & best practice
Select the grade by measured substrate temperature, not just forecast air temperature — use PC20 only when the concrete and ambient stay within 5°C–20°C, and switch to PC30/PC40 in warmer conditions. Grit-blast both mating faces to a sound, clean, contaminant-free finish, remove all free water, and carry out a dry run to confirm alignment and rehearse timing before mixing. Mix the full pre-weighed base and hardener together with a slow-speed heavy-duty paddle, scraping the sides until a uniform grey is achieved with no streaks; do not split packs by eye. Apply to both faces with a serrated trowel, then close and pressure the joint within the open time — if you miss it, lightly scratch the surface to expose fresh adhesive before closing. Mix only what the crew can place within the pot life, work in smaller batches in warmer weather, and clean tools immediately with Nitoflor Sol before the epoxy sets. Store packs cool and out of direct sun, and always confirm current temperature grade, pot-life and pack data against the latest Fosroc TDS for the project.

How we position Fosroc Nitobond PC20
Within the Fosroc range, Nitobond PC20 sits apart from the better-known Nitobond EP (epoxy bonding bridge) and Nitobond SBR (acrylic/SBR latex bonding aid and admixture): those are slurry coats that bond new concrete to old, whereas PC20 is a structural jointing adhesive for gluing precast segments together. On Indian projects it commonly works alongside Fosroc’s wider precast and repair system — Conbextra grouts for bedding and anchoring, the Renderoc range for concrete repair, and Nitoseal/Thioflex sealants for movement joints. As Fosroc’s authorised distributor and applicator in Delhi NCR and Pan-India, Space Arc Engineering supplies the correct temperature grade (PC20/PC30/PC40) matched to your site conditions. Among credible alternatives, Sika offers segmental and structural epoxy adhesives in its Sikadur range (for example Sikadur-31 and segmental jointing grades), and STP (Shalimar) and MBS Building Chemicals supply structural epoxy adhesives used on Indian precast and bridge work; Dr. Fixit (Pidilite) is strong in waterproofing and general repair epoxies but is less commonly specified for match-cast segmental jointing. For load-transferring precast segment joints requiring FIP-class performance and fast cool-weather cure, the Nitobond PC range remains a well-established specification; the right choice ultimately depends on the structural specification, the segment temperature on the day, and the consultant’s approved-products list.
