Fosroc Nitoflor Hardtop S
A factory-blended, non-metallic dry-shake hardener that bonds monolithically into fresh concrete to deliver a dense, dust-free, abrasion-resistant industrial floor.
What is it?
A ready-to-use, factory-blended dry-shake floor hardener composed of specially graded non-metallic aggregates (Mohs hardness 7), Portland cement and workability additives, broadcast onto fresh concrete to form a hard-wearing monolithic surface.
Where is it used?
Warehouse and distribution floors, loading bays, manufacturing and engineering workshops, power stations, heavy-industry plants and agricultural buildings across India where concrete floors face constant wheeled and foot traffic.
Why use it?
It dramatically raises surface abrasion and wear resistance, eliminates concrete dusting, and is applied during the concrete pour itself, so there is no separate topping, primer or curing membrane sequence and no curling or delamination risk of a thin bonded screed.
How is it applied?
Broadcast by hand or spreader onto freshly floated concrete in two passes, allowed to absorb moisture, then power-floated and power-trowelled into the slab to form a single monolithic wearing surface, followed by curing.
About Fosroc Nitoflor Hardtop S
Fosroc Nitoflor Hardtop S is a surface hardening compound supplied as a quality-controlled, factory-blended powder that is ready to use on site with no on-site batching of additives. It is built around specially selected hard-wearing aggregates chosen for their abrasion and wear characteristics, blended with Portland cement and workability additives. The aggregates carry a hardness value of 7 on the Mohs scale, which is what gives the finished floor its resistance to the grinding and gouging action of forklift wheels, pallet trucks, steel-wheeled trolleys and dragged loads.
Unlike a separately bonded granolithic topping, Nitoflor Hardtop S is a dry-shake (or “shake-on”) hardener: the powder is broadcast directly onto the surface of freshly placed, floated concrete while the slab is still plastic. As it draws moisture up from the base concrete, it is floated and trowelled in, fusing with the slab to create one continuous monolithic wearing layer. Because the hardener and the base cure together, the curling, shrinkage and cracking problems that plague thin bonded screeds are designed out from the start.
The “S” grade is the standard non-metallic specification, supplied in natural concrete grey as standard. The cured surface is dense, non-porous and non-dusting, with a hard, abrasion-resistant finish that is easier to clean and maintain than untreated power-floated concrete. Being non-metallic, it will not rust, stain or spark in the way metallic (iron-aggregate) hardeners can in damp conditions, which makes it a safer default choice for food-adjacent, agricultural and general-industrial environments. For Indian projects, Space Arc Engineering supplies Nitoflor Hardtop S as an authorised Fosroc distributor and applicator, with technical support on dosage, slab preparation and finishing for Delhi NCR and Pan-India sites.
The technical insight
The performance of any dry-shake hardener is governed less by the bag and more by the timing of the broadcast against the concrete’s bleed and set. Nitoflor Hardtop S works by capillary absorption of mix water from the plastic slab, so it must go down after bleed water has dissipated but while the surface is still workable to a fingerprint. Broadcasting too early floods the hardener and dilutes the cement matrix; too late and the powder will not wet out, leaving a powdery, poorly bonded skin that scales under traffic. The standard discipline is a two-pass broadcast — roughly two-thirds of the dose applied first and floated in to lock the bulk of the aggregate, then the balance applied to even out coverage and close the surface — followed by power-floating and progressive power-trowelling to densify and burnish. Because the finished layer is only a few millimetres of hardener fused into the top of the slab, the underlying concrete grade, mix design and finishing crew skill matter as much as the product: the base concrete should be a sound, well-compacted structural mix without calcium chloride accelerators or excessive air entrainment, both of which interfere with the bond and the surface density. Curing immediately after final trowel — with a compatible Fosroc curing membrane such as Concure — is essential to retain the moisture the hardened surface needs to develop strength and avoid plastic and drying shrinkage crazing.
Where it is used
- Warehouse, godown and distribution-centre floors carrying continuous forklift and pallet-truck traffic
- Loading bays, dispatch docks and truck-turning aprons subject to point loads and steel-wheel abrasion
- Manufacturing, fabrication and engineering workshop floors
- Power stations and heavy-industry plant rooms
- Agricultural and food-storage buildings, sheds and processing halls
- Automotive service bays, assembly areas and parking decks
- General light-to-heavy-duty industrial concrete floors requiring a dust-free, hard-wearing surface
Key advantages
- Supplied factory-blended and ready to use — no site mixing of aggregates or additives
- Non-metallic aggregate with Mohs hardness 7 for high abrasion and wear resistance
- Forms a monolithic bond with fresh concrete, eliminating the curling, shrinkage and cracking of thin bonded screeds
- Produces a dense, non-porous, non-dusting surface that is easier to clean and maintain
- Non-metallic composition will not rust, stain or corrode in damp conditions, unlike iron-aggregate hardeners
- Applied during the concrete pour, saving a separate topping, primer and grinding operation
- Cost-effective way to upgrade a standard concrete floor to industrial-duty performance
- Backed by Fosroc technical support and local supply through Space Arc in India
Limitations & considerations
- Not suitable in areas exposed to acids, their salts, sugars or other media that aggressively attack ordinary Portland cement — an epoxy or PU floor system should be specified instead
- Must not be applied over concrete containing calcium chloride accelerators or excessive air entrainment, which compromise bond and surface density
- Application is time-critical and finish quality depends heavily on an experienced power-floating and trowelling crew
- Standard supply is natural concrete grey; colour options are limited compared with resin floor coatings
- Provides a hard wearing surface but is not a decorative, fully impervious or chemically resistant coating
- Performance is tied to the quality, grade and compaction of the base concrete slab
- Requires immediate, correct curing to develop strength and avoid surface crazing
Selection & best practice
Specify a sound, well-compacted structural base concrete free of calcium chloride and excessive air entrainment, and confirm the mix with the ready-mix supplier before pour day. Plan the dry-shake application as part of the pour sequence so the finishing crew is on site as the slab is placed. Apply Nitoflor Hardtop S in two broadcasts onto the freshly floated surface once bleed water has gone — typically around two-thirds of the dose first, floated in, then the remaining third to even out coverage — for a total of roughly 3 to 5 kg/m² depending on the duty level (lighter dosage for foot and light-traffic areas, the higher rate for heavy forklift and steel-wheel traffic). Float and progressively power-trowel the hardener into the slab to densify and close the surface, then cure immediately with a compatible Fosroc curing membrane such as Concure to lock in moisture. For acid, sugar, oil or chemical exposure, do not rely on a hardener — move up to a Nitoflor epoxy or polyurethane system. Space Arc can advise on the correct dosage band, slab specification and curing regime for your project.

How we position Fosroc Nitoflor Hardtop S
Nitoflor Hardtop S sits at the workhorse, value end of Fosroc’s industrial flooring range: it is the go-to choice when a new concrete slab simply needs to be made harder, dust-free and abrasion-resistant for forklift and general industrial traffic, without the cost of a resin system. Within the Fosroc family it pairs naturally with Concure curing membranes and is the dry-shake counterpart to the heavier-duty and decorative Nitoflor options — where a floor faces chemical attack, hygiene demands or needs a coloured, impervious finish, the specification should move up to a Nitoflor epoxy system (such as the self-levelling Nitoflor or screed grades) or a Nitoflor polyurethane floor for thermal-shock and aggressive-chemical areas. Against the wider market, Hardtop S competes directly with dry-shake hardeners such as Sika’s Sikafloor / Sika Chapdur range and BASF/MBCC MasterTop dry-shake hardeners, while heavy chemical and thermal-shock duty would instead call for PU concrete systems like Sika Sikafloor PurCem or MBCC Ucrete. Honestly assessed, Nitoflor Hardtop S is not a chemical-resistant or decorative floor and lives or dies on application timing and base-concrete quality — but for hardening a fresh industrial slab cost-effectively, with Fosroc’s documentation and Space Arc’s local supply and applicator support behind it, it is a dependable specification.
