What is it?

A two-component, solvent-free thixotropic epoxy paste (base + hardener) based on epoxy resins, graded fillers and performance additives, used as a fairing coat, surface filler, repair mortar, bedding mortar and adhesive.

Where is it used?

Concrete surface preparation ahead of protective and flooring coatings, water-retaining and effluent structures, car parks, plant rooms, bridges and industrial floors across Delhi NCR and Pan-India.

Why use it?

It fills pinholes, blowholes and minor irregularities and seals cracks so subsequent epoxy coatings achieve a continuous, pinhole-free film, cutting coating consumption and rejection while bonding tenaciously to concrete without a primer.

How is it applied?

Stir base and hardener, combine the full packs (no part-packing), mix to a uniform grey paste with a slow-speed paddle, then trowel, scrape or squeegee from featheredge to 3 mm; abrade and dust off before overcoating after a 24-hour cure.

About Fosroc Nitomortar FCE

Fosroc Nitomortar FCE is a high-strength, trowel-grade epoxy resin fairing coat, repair mortar, bedding compound and adhesive engineered for the final surface preparation of concrete before protective or decorative coatings are applied. It belongs to Fosroc’s well-established Nitomortar family of epoxy repair products and is supplied as a two-component, solvent-free, thixotropic system: a coloured base and a contrasting hardener that, once combined, produce a uniform grey paste. The contrasting component colours are a deliberate quality-control feature, giving the applicator a clear visual cue that mixing is complete and homogeneous. Because the material is applied directly to sound concrete without a separate primer, it is quick to deploy on site and reduces the number of steps a contractor must manage. In Indian practice the product is positioned as the bridge between structural repair and the protective coating system: even a well-cast or well-repaired concrete surface is rarely free of blowholes, bug-holes, form-tie marks and shallow honeycombing, and applying a high-build epoxy or polyurethane coating straight over those defects traps air and produces pinholing, craters and premature coating failure. Nitomortar FCE faces off those imperfections to a smooth, dense, impermeable skin so that the following coat lays down as a continuous film. Typical destinations include water-retaining and effluent-treatment structures, secondary containment bunds, car park decks, pharmaceutical and food-grade floors, plant rooms, basements and bridge elements. Space Arc Engineering, an authorised Fosroc distributor and applicator serving Delhi NCR and the wider Indian market, supplies Nitomortar FCE alongside the Nitocote and Nitoflor coatings it is designed to work beneath, so specifiers can source a compatible build-up from a single point.

The technical insight

The defining characteristic of Nitomortar FCE is its thixotropy combined with 100% solids content. Being solvent-free, there is no solvent flash-off that would otherwise leave shrinkage voids or re-open the very pinholes the product is meant to fill, and the thixotropic rheology lets it be worked onto vertical and overhead surfaces without slumping while still feathering down to a clean zero edge. The achievable thickness window is the most important design constraint: it is intended for featheredge to a maximum of 3 mm in a single pass. Where reprofiling or hole-filling demands more than 3 mm, the correct specification is the heavier-bodied Nitomortar FC(B) rather than building Nitomortar FCE up in thick lifts, which would risk exotherm and sag. Cured strength is high for a fairing coat at 70 N/mm² compressive at 7 days, comfortably exceeding the substrate concrete, so the filler is never the weak link in the system. Workability is governed by pot life and temperature: in the hot Indian climate the usable time shortens markedly from 25°C to 35°C, which is why mixed material should be decanted onto spot boards and applied promptly. Crucially, the cured surface must be lightly abraded and cleaned to a dust-free finish before overcoating, because the dense, low-energy epoxy skin will otherwise limit mechanical key for the subsequent coat. The product develops genuine chemical resistance once cured, withstanding oils, fats, petrol, salt and sugar solutions, bleach, dilute mineral acids, alkalis and many solvents, which is why it suits aggressive industrial and effluent environments rather than purely cosmetic making-good.

Where it is used

  • Filling pinholes, blowholes and bug-holes in concrete before applying Fosroc Nitocote and Nitoflor protective and flooring coatings
  • General reprofiling and making-good of minor surface irregularities over large areas up to 3 mm depth
  • Sealing of surface cracks in preparation for crack injection
  • Use as a general-purpose epoxy bedding mortar and adhesive for fixing and bonding
  • Surface preparation of water-retaining structures, sewage and effluent tanks before chemical-resistant lining
  • Faring-off concrete decks, plant-room floors and bund walls ahead of high-build epoxy or PU coatings

Key advantages

  • Solvent-free, 100% solids formulation that fills without solvent-shrinkage and re-opening of pinholes
  • High compressive strength of 70 N/mm2 at 7 days, stronger than typical substrate concrete
  • Applied directly to concrete without a separate primer, simplifying and speeding up site work
  • Thixotropic, non-slump rheology allows clean application to vertical and overhead surfaces and feathering to a zero edge
  • Contrasting base and hardener colours give a clear visual confirmation of complete mixing
  • Strong adhesion to concrete plus broad chemical resistance to oils, acids, alkalis, salts and many solvents
  • Reduces consumption and rejection of the subsequent coating, lowering overall system cost
  • Non-flammable in the can, with a 12-month shelf life in unopened packs

Limitations & considerations

  • Limited to a maximum of 3 mm thickness per pass; deeper reprofiling requires the heavier Nitomortar FC(B)
  • Pot life shortens sharply at higher temperatures (about 1 hour at 35C), demanding fast working in Indian summer conditions
  • Part packs must never be used or part-mixed, since the base-to-hardener ratio is fixed by pack
  • Must not be exposed to moving water during application, and heavy rainfall before final set can cause surface scour
  • Cured surface must be abraded and cleaned to a dust-free finish before overcoating to ensure adhesion
  • Substrate must be clean, dry and free of laitance, usually needing grit-blasting or mechanical preparation
  • As an epoxy it is not UV-stable and will chalk if left permanently exposed, so it is intended to be overcoated
  • Higher material cost than cementitious fillers, justified only where epoxy performance and chemical resistance are needed

Selection & best practice

Always identify and treat the structural cause of defects before fairing-off; Nitomortar FCE is a finishing and filling material, not a substitute for structural repair mortars such as the Renderoc range. Prepare the concrete to a clean, dry, laitance-free profile by grit-blasting or mechanical abrasion, and check moisture before starting. Mix only complete packs, emptying the entire hardener into the base and blending with a slow-speed (400-500 rpm) paddle until the colour is fully uniform, and size each batch to what the crew can apply within the pot life at the prevailing site temperature, working in the cooler parts of the day during summer. Apply from featheredge to no more than 3 mm; switch to Nitomortar FC(B) wherever greater build is required. Allow the full 24-hour cure, then lightly abrade and remove all dust before applying the Nitocote or Nitoflor coating so the system bonds as one continuous build-up. Keep the work dry, protected from rainfall until final set, and confirm compatibility of the whole system with Fosroc or Space Arc Engineering technical support before specifying.

Frequently asked questions

Is Fosroc Nitomortar FCE a structural repair mortar?
No. It is a fairing coat, surface filler and bedding/adhesive mortar for blowholes, pinholes and minor irregularities up to 3 mm, and for sealing cracks before injection. For structural patch repair or larger reprofiling you should use Fosroc’s Renderoc repair mortars, and for fills thicker than 3 mm use Nitomortar FC(B).
What is the maximum thickness I can apply in one pass?
3 mm. It is designed to work from a featheredge up to 3 mm. Where greater build is needed, Fosroc recommends the heavier-bodied Nitomortar FC(B) rather than building Nitomortar FCE up in thick lifts.
Do I need a primer before applying it?
No separate primer is required on sound, clean, dry concrete. The substrate must be free of laitance, dust and contamination, usually achieved by grit-blasting or mechanical abrasion before application.
How long before I can overcoat it?
Allow a minimum 24-hour curing period, then lightly abrade the cured surface and clean it to a dust-free finish before applying the epoxy coating. The abrasion step is important to ensure the next coat keys properly to the dense epoxy skin.
What is the pot life and how does the Indian climate affect it?
Pot life is roughly 1 hour 40 minutes at 25C, shortening to about 1 hour at 35C. In hot Indian conditions, mix smaller batches, decant onto spot boards and apply promptly, ideally during the cooler parts of the day.
Which coatings is Nitomortar FCE compatible with, and does Space Arc supply them?
It is intended to be overcoated with Fosroc epoxy systems such as the Nitocote and Nitoflor ranges. Space Arc Engineering, an authorised Fosroc distributor and applicator in Delhi NCR with Pan-India supply, can provide Nitomortar FCE together with the matching coatings and technical guidance.

How we position Fosroc Nitomortar FCE

Within Fosroc’s own range, Nitomortar FCE sits at the surface-preparation end of the concrete repair workflow rather than the structural end. It is the natural partner to Fosroc’s protective and flooring coatings (Nitocote and Nitoflor), and its closest siblings are Nitomortar FC and the heavier Nitomortar FC(B), which takes over wherever the build needs to exceed 3 mm; for genuine structural reinstatement the specification should move to the Renderoc repair-mortar family, and for resin anchoring or bonding to Nitobond or Lokfix products. Against the wider market, the comparable epoxy fairing/filler and patch products include Sika’s Sikadur and Icosit-based fillers and Sikagard surface preparation systems, MBS (MB Solutions / formerly BASF Master Builders) MasterEmaco and MasterSeal lines, Dr. Fixit’s Pidicrete and epoxy repair range from Pidilite, and STP’s epoxy mortars; each offers broadly similar solvent-free epoxy fairing technology, and the right choice usually comes down to the protective-coating system being specified above it, local availability and applicator familiarity. The honest case for Nitomortar FCE is system compatibility and a strong, chemically resistant, pinhole-filling skin from a single trusted brand, supplied and applied in India by Space Arc Engineering; where a project is already standardised on a competing coating system, the matching filler from that manufacturer may integrate more cleanly, and that trade-off should be weighed at specification stage.
