What is it?

A pitch-free, water-based, single-component elastomeric liquid-applied waterproofing membrane that cures to a seamless, permanently flexible barrier complying with ASTM C836-84.

Where is it used?

Foundations, basements, retaining walls, tunnels, podium and ground floors, car decks, roof terraces, balconies, bridges, inspection pits, sewage works and non-potable water-retaining structures.

Why use it?

It bonds tightly to concrete and masonry, bridges shrinkage cracks, resists corrosive soil and bio-deterioration, and forms a jointless membrane that is far simpler to detail than torch-applied bituminous sheets.

How is it applied?

Applied cold by brush, roller, squeegee or airless spray over a clean, sound, dry substrate at a minimum 1.0 mm wet film thickness (1 litre/m2), typically in two coats with reinforcement scrim at detailing.

About Fosroc Nitoproof 600WB

Fosroc Nitoproof 600WB is a liquid-applied waterproofing membrane from Fosroc’s well-established Nitoproof range of cold-applied coatings. It is a single-component, water-based and pitch-free elastomeric system supplied ready to use directly from the drum, requiring no on-site mixing of two parts and no heat or naked flame to install. When applied as a liquid it flows around penetrations, upstands and complex geometry, then cures to a continuous, seamless membrane with no laps or joints, which is precisely where conventional bituminous sheet membranes most often fail.

The product is classed as a medium-viscosity grade (approximately 600 poise) that can be worked by roller, squeegee or airless spray onto both horizontal and vertical surfaces. On curing it forms a tough yet permanently flexible barrier that remains serviceable across a very wide temperature band, from minus 40 degrees C to plus 80 degrees C continuous ambient, so it accommodates the thermal movement and substrate cracking that buildings inevitably experience over their life.

Because it is water-based, Nitoproof 600WB is low-odour and environmentally friendlier than solvented bitumen or coal-tar systems, making it well suited to enclosed spaces such as basements, lift pits, tunnels and sewage structures where ventilation is limited. It is available in grey, blue and black, with the colour change between coats giving a useful visual check that a full, even film has been achieved. For Indian projects in Delhi NCR and across the country, Space Arc Engineering supplies the genuine Fosroc product with application support, helping consultants and contractors specify the correct primer, reinforcement and protection regime for each below-grade or exposed deck condition.

The technical insight

Nitoproof 600WB is a water-based elastomeric polymer emulsion that coalesces on drying to a high-elongation film. The headline performance figures explain its appeal: at 28 days the cured membrane records about 600 percent elongation and roughly 1 N/mm2 tensile strength (both to ASTM D412), with tear resistance around 8 N/mm (ASTM D624). That combination of very high extensibility with modest modulus is what lets a 1 mm film bridge shrinkage and non-structural cracks without splitting. Solids content is 50 percent by volume, which is the key number for film-build estimating: because roughly half the wet film is water that evaporates, a 1.0 mm wet film at 1 litre/m2 cures down to approximately 0.5 mm of dry membrane, so achieving the specified dry film thickness depends on applying enough wet material and allowing proper coalescence. The membrane is effectively impermeable, recording nil water permeability at 5 bar pressure (BS EN 12390-8) and a low water-vapour transmission of about 0.4 g/h/m2 (ASTM E96). Standard compliance is to ASTM C836-84, the specification for high-solids, cold liquid-applied elastomeric waterproofing membranes for below-grade and between-slab use. It is unaffected by mild alkalis and water-borne salts and resists bio-deterioration, and being thermally stable with an irreversible cure it will not melt, flow or re-emulsify at high service temperatures the way some bituminous products can.

Where it is used

  • Below-grade tanking to foundations, basement walls, retaining walls and lift/inspection pits
  • Tunnels, subways and cut-and-cover structures requiring jointless waterproofing
  • Podium decks, ground floors and suspended floors beneath screeds and finishes
  • Roof terraces, balconies, patios and inverted (protected-membrane) roofs
  • Car park decks and bridge decks (beneath protection and wearing surfaces)
  • Sewage treatment works and non-potable water-retaining structures
  • Waterproofing across movement and construction joints using Nitoseal sealant, debonding tape and Nitoproof Scrim reinforcement

Key advantages

  • Single-component and ready to use straight from the drum, eliminating site mixing errors
  • Cold-applied with no flame, no torching and no hot works permit, improving site safety
  • Seamless, jointless liquid membrane that simplifies detailing around penetrations and upstands
  • Water-based, pitch-free and low-odour, suitable for enclosed basements, tunnels and sewage works
  • High elasticity (around 600 percent elongation) bridges shrinkage and non-structural cracks
  • Thermally stable with irreversible cure, so it will not melt or flow at high temperatures
  • Nil water permeability at 5 bar and resistance to corrosive soils, mild alkalis and bio-deterioration
  • Mechanical damage is easily repaired by spot application without removing surrounding membrane

Limitations & considerations

  • Do not apply when substrate temperature is below 5 degrees C, and protect material from temperatures below 10 degrees C in storage
  • As a water-based emulsion it must dry and coalesce before exposure, so it is sensitive to rain, standing water and high humidity during cure
  • Substrate must be sound, clean and dry; absorbent surfaces (porous concrete, sand/cement, cement board) need sealing with a 1:1 Nitoproof 600WB and water primer coat
  • Not suitable for potable (drinking) water contact applications
  • Reinforcement scrim and proper detailing are required at movement joints, cracks and right-angle bends to perform reliably
  • The membrane requires mechanical protection (screed, protection board or separator) before backfilling or trafficking
  • Around 50 percent solids means achieving the specified dry film thickness depends on disciplined wet-film control across coats

Selection & best practice

Achieve and verify the wet film thickness. Apply Nitoproof 600WB at a minimum 1.0 mm wet film (1 litre/m2 per coat) and build the specified thickness in two coats, ideally applied at right angles to one another on critical work so the colour change confirms full coverage. Pre-treat all cracks, movement joints, coving and right-angle bends first with a 1.3 mm coat extending 75 to 150 mm either side, embedding Nitoproof Scrim where movement is possible, and allow these to cure overnight before general application. Seal absorbent substrates with a 1:1 Nitoproof 600WB to water primer coat. Allow the finished membrane to cure at least 24 hours at 25 degrees C (7 days before a water test) and always install a cementitious screed, protection board or separator sheet before backfilling or trafficking. Never apply below 5 degrees C substrate temperature or when rain is imminent.

Frequently asked questions

Is Fosroc Nitoproof 600WB a genuine Fosroc product?
Yes. It is part of Fosroc’s Nitoproof range of liquid-applied waterproofing membranes and is listed on the official Fosroc website with a published technical data sheet. Space Arc Engineering supplies the genuine product as an authorised Fosroc distributor in Delhi NCR and across India.
What is the coverage of Nitoproof 600WB?
The theoretical coverage is about 1 m2 per litre at a 1 mm wet film thickness. Because it is roughly 50 percent solids by volume, the cured dry film is around half the wet film, so always estimate generously and account for substrate texture, porosity and wastage. A 20 litre drum covers approximately 20 m2 at 1 mm WFT per coat.
Does it need a primer?
Priming is not normally required on good-quality, dense concrete. Absorbent surfaces such as porous concrete, sand/cement renders and cement boards should first be sealed with a 1:1 mixture of Nitoproof 600WB and water to stop the substrate drawing moisture out of the membrane.
How many coats and what thickness are required?
Apply at a minimum 1.0 mm wet film thickness (1 litre/m2), typically built up in two coats. For critical work apply the two coats at right angles so the colour difference confirms a complete, even film. Pre-treat cracks, joints and right-angle bends at 1.3 mm with Nitoproof Scrim reinforcement before the general coats.
Can it be used for drinking-water tanks?
No. Nitoproof 600WB is suitable for non-potable water-retaining structures such as sewage works, but it is not intended for potable (drinking) water contact. For potable water tanks a product specifically certified for that contact should be selected.
How does it compare with torch-applied bituminous membranes?
As a cold liquid it needs no flame or hot works, forms a seamless joint-free film that is far easier to detail around penetrations, and being thermally stable it will not melt or flow at high service temperatures. It does, however, depend on disciplined wet-film control and adequate drying, whereas sheet membranes give a fixed factory thickness.

How we position Fosroc Nitoproof 600WB

Within Fosroc’s own catalogue, Nitoproof 600WB sits alongside the solvent-borne Nitoproof 600 and the polyurethane-based Nitoproof 600PF, and is the water-based, environmentally friendlier choice for enclosed basements, tunnels and sewage works where low odour matters; it is naturally specified with companion Fosroc detailing products such as Nitoseal MS600 joint sealant, Nitoseal Debonding Tape, Nitoproof Scrim reinforcement and Fosroc protection boards, and complements cementitious systems like Brushbond and Renderoc in a complete waterproofing and repair package. Against the wider Indian market it competes with established liquid and bituminous waterproofing lines from Sika (for example Sikalastic and SikaProof systems), MBS/MYK Laticrete, Dr. Fixit (Pidilite, such as the LW and Newcoat ranges) and STP Limited (Shalimar Tar Products). Compared with rigid cementitious coatings it offers far greater crack-bridging elasticity, and compared with torch-applied membranes it removes the fire risk and lap joints; the trade-off is that, as a water-based emulsion, it demands a dry substrate, controlled drying conditions and careful wet-film management to reach its rated dry thickness. For most below-grade tanking, podium and terrace applications in Indian conditions it is a strong, well-proven specification, and Space Arc Engineering can advise on selecting between Nitoproof 600WB, 600 and 600PF for the specific exposure, movement and chemical demands of each project.
