What is it?

A 3mm thick, factory-made SBS (styrene-butadiene-styrene) modified bituminous membrane reinforced with a non-woven polyester core (180 g/m²) and finished on top with a protective mineral slate granule layer. It is bonded to the substrate by heating with a propane torch.

Where is it used?

Exposed and protected concrete roof slabs, podium and car-park decks, shallow basement tankings, retaining structures, tunnels and subways. Across India it is specified wherever a durable, single-layer reinforced membrane with a UV-resistant finished surface is wanted.

Why use it?

It combines a high-strength polyester core (excellent puncture and tear resistance), the elasticity and low-temperature flexibility of SBS chemistry, and a slate top finish that resists UV and foot traffic, all installed quickly by torch fusion with self-formed laps.

How is it applied?

The float-finished, dry concrete is primed with Proofex Torchseal Primer; once tack-free, the roll is positioned, then progressively torch-fused as it is unrolled, with 100 mm side laps and 150 mm end laps fully welded.

About Fosroc Proofex Torchseal 3SI Standard

Fosroc Proofex Torchseal 3SI Standard is a prefabricated, torch-applied waterproofing membrane and one of the most widely specified products in Fosroc’s Proofex Torchseal family for the Indian market. It belongs to the same engineered platform as Fosroc’s 3S/4S/5S range and carries the distinguishing “SI” identity: a 3mm membrane with a mineral slate (granule) top finish, making it the surface-protected, India-grade member of the line. The “3” denotes nominal thickness in millimetres, the “S” the slate finish, and the “I” the India specification.

At its core, the product is built around premium-grade, heavily SBS-modified bitumen reinforced with a non-woven polyester fleece weighing 180 g/m². SBS (styrene-butadiene-styrene) is an elastomeric polymer; blended into bitumen it transforms a brittle, temperature-sensitive material into a rubber-like compound that stays flexible in cold conditions and recovers elastically after stress. The polyester carrier gives the sheet its dimensional stability, tear and puncture strength, and the ability to bridge minor substrate movement and shrinkage cracks without splitting. The mineral slate granules pressed into the upper face act as a sacrificial, UV-resistant wear layer, which is why 3SI is favoured for exposed roof and deck applications where the membrane is the final finished surface rather than being buried under screed.

For a distributor’s customers in Delhi NCR and across India, the appeal is practical. Indian roof slabs and podium decks endure punishing thermal cycling, from summer surface temperatures that can exceed 60 to 70 deg C down to cold winter nights in the north. A self-protected SBS membrane with proven cold flexibility to -15 deg C and a softening point of 120 deg C is engineered to survive that swing. Because it arrives as a controlled-thickness factory sheet, the in-place performance does not depend on an applicator achieving the right wet-film thickness by hand, which is a recurring weakness of liquid-applied systems on large areas. This page summarises the verified technical profile, correct applications and honest limitations so that specifiers, contractors and facility owners can decide where 3SI Standard fits and where an alternative Fosroc system or a competing brand may serve better.

The technical insight

The engineering value of 3SI sits in the marriage of three layers, each doing a distinct job. The SBS polymer modification is the headline: unlike APP (atactic polypropylene) plastomeric membranes, which are stiffer and rely on plasticity, SBS is elastomeric, giving the sheet genuine rubber-like elastic recovery. This is what delivers the verified low-temperature flexibility of -15 deg C (UEAtc), meaning the membrane will not crack when bent over a sharp arris or upstand in cold weather, an important property for north Indian winters and chilled-store roofs. The 120 deg C softening point (ASTM D36) governs the other end of the range, indicating the temperature at which the compound begins to flow; a 120 deg C value is comfortably above achievable Indian roof-surface temperatures, so the membrane resists sagging on slopes and at laps.

The 180 g/m² non-woven polyester fleece is the structural backbone. Polyester (rather than glass) is chosen because it is tough and extensible, contributing the verified tensile strength of 750 N/5cm longitudinal and 550 N/5cm transverse, with elongation of 40 percent (L) and 60 percent (T) (UEAtc). That elongation lets the membrane accommodate thermal movement and minor crack-bridging without rupture, while the tear resistance (170/180 N/5cm) and high puncture rating resist site damage during follow-on trades. Lap-joint strength matches the parent sheet (750/550 N/5cm), confirming that a correctly torched seam is as strong as the membrane itself, which is critical because laps are the usual failure point of any membrane system. Finally, very low water absorption (<0.15 percent, ASTM D570) and water-vapour transmission (<0.50 g/m²/24h, ASTM E96) confirm the sheet behaves as a true barrier rather than a sponge over its service life. The torch-fusion method is the practical genius of the format: heating the underside re-melts the bitumen so the membrane chemically and mechanically welds itself to the primed substrate and to adjacent sheets, producing a continuous, monolithic, fully bonded barrier with no reliance on separate adhesives.

Where it is used

  • Exposed concrete roof slabs where the slate finish serves as the final UV-resistant surface
  • Podium decks and landscaped/terrace areas above habitable space, typically beneath protection and drainage layers
  • Multi-level car-park deck slabs subject to traffic and point loading
  • Shallow basement tanking and retaining walls with low to moderate water-table pressure
  • Tunnels, subways, cut-and-cover structures and underground civil works
  • Plant-room floors, water-tank roofs and service-corridor slabs requiring a robust, puncture-resistant barrier
  • Refurbishment and re-waterproofing of distressed RCC roofs over a sound, primed substrate

Key advantages

  • SBS elastomeric chemistry gives genuine elastic recovery and verified cold flexibility to -15 deg C, suiting wide Indian thermal swings
  • Factory-controlled 3mm thickness removes the applicator-dependent film-thickness risk of liquid systems
  • High-strength 180 g/m² polyester core delivers excellent tensile, tear and puncture resistance (750/550 N/5cm tensile)
  • Mineral slate top finish provides built-in UV protection and a trafficable wear layer for exposed roofs
  • Torch-fused laps weld to full membrane strength, creating a continuous monolithic barrier
  • Very low water absorption (<0.15%) and vapour transmission (<0.50 g/m²/24h) confirm true barrier behaviour
  • Fast single-layer installation over large areas, reducing programme time versus multi-coat liquid membranes
  • Readily formed to contours, upstands and details; bonds well to correctly primed concrete

Limitations & considerations

  • Hot-works process: open propane flame requires fire precautions, trained applicators and is unsuitable near combustible insulation, finishes or in confined/occupied spaces without controls
  • Performance is only as good as substrate preparation; surfaces must be float-finished, dry, frost-free and correctly primed
  • Lap quality is operator-dependent; under-heated or over-heated seams are the common failure mode and need skilled labour
  • Not a self-healing or crack-bridging-on-demand system; active or large structural cracks must be treated separately before overlay
  • As a sheet membrane it suits broadly planar areas; highly congested detailing with many penetrations is slower and may favour a liquid-applied system
  • Requires re-priming if the primed substrate is left exposed for more than 24 hours before membrane application
  • Standard slate finish is grey/mineral; it is a waterproofing layer, not a decorative or heavily reflective cool-roof finish without an additional coating

Selection & best practice

Specify 3SI Standard only over a structurally sound, float-finished RCC deck that has been cured, dried and cleared of laitance, projecting nibs and contamination. Always apply Proofex Torchseal Primer and let it dry tack-free before torching, and re-prime any area left exposed beyond 24 hours. Maintain a minimum 100 mm side lap and 150 mm end lap, fully welding each seam until a small bead of molten bitumen is visible at the edge, the visual proof of a sound weld. Stagger end laps between rows. Form upstands at all parapets, kerbs and penetrations to at least 150 mm and dress the membrane into rebates or under flashings; reinforce internal/external corners and pipe penetrations with cut pieces before the main sheet. On exposed roofs the slate finish can remain as the wearing surface, but on podiums and car-park decks protect the membrane with a screed, protection board or insulation before traffic. Schedule a flood test on roofs and tanking before covering. Treat all torch work as hot work: clear combustibles, keep extinguishers to hand, use trained applicators with gloves and goggles, and avoid flame application directly against insulation or other flammable substrates. Store rolls upright/horizontal as directed, one pallet high, in a cool dry place, and use within the 12-month shelf life.

Frequently asked questions

Is Proofex Torchseal 3SI Standard an SBS or APP membrane?
It is an SBS-modified bituminous membrane. Fosroc’s own technical data for the Proofex Torchseal 3S/SI platform describes it as a torch-applied SBS membrane built on premium-grade heavily modified bitumen. SBS gives elastomeric, rubber-like recovery and good cold flexibility (to -15 deg C), which distinguishes it from stiffer APP plastomeric membranes. Some third-party listings incorrectly label it APP; rely on the Fosroc datasheet.
What does the 3SI naming actually mean?
In Fosroc’s Proofex Torchseal coding, the ‘3’ is the nominal membrane thickness in millimetres, ‘S’ indicates the mineral slate top finish, and ‘I’ denotes the India specification. So 3SI Standard is the 3mm, slate-finished, India-market member of the Torchseal range, related to the global 3S product.
Can the slate-finished surface be left exposed on a roof?
Yes. The mineral slate granule layer is a UV-resistant wearing surface, which is the main reason the slate (‘S’) variant is chosen for exposed roofs rather than buried tanking. For podium and car-park decks subject to traffic, however, it should still be protected with a screed, protection board or insulation.
What thickness and roll size does it come in?
3SI Standard is a 3mm membrane (tolerance +/- 5%) supplied in rolls 10 m long by 1 m wide. The related Torchseal range also offers 4mm and 5mm grades for higher-duty tanking, but the ‘SI’ variant is the 3mm slate-finished India product.
Does it need a primer, and which one?
Yes. The concrete must be float-finished, dry and clean, then primed with Proofex Torchseal Primer and allowed to dry tack-free before torching. Primer coverage is roughly 0.2-0.8 litre/m². If the primed surface is left more than 24 hours before the membrane goes down, it must be re-primed.
How does it compare with a liquid-applied membrane like Brushbond or Dr. Fixit?
A torch-applied sheet such as 3SI delivers a guaranteed factory thickness and very high tensile/puncture strength, ideal for large planar roofs and decks. Liquid-applied systems (Fosroc Brushbond, Dr. Fixit, Sika coatings) are seamless and far better around congested detailing and many penetrations, but their performance depends on the applicator achieving the right film thickness. Many specifiers combine the two: a torch membrane on the field and a liquid system at complex details.
Is Space Arc Engineering an authorised source for this product?
Yes. Space Arc Engineering is an authorised Fosroc distributor serving Delhi NCR and Pan-India, supplying genuine Proofex Torchseal 3SI Standard along with the matching Proofex Torchseal Primer and full technical guidance on substrate prep, lap detailing and protection.

How we position Fosroc Proofex Torchseal 3SI Standard

Within Fosroc’s own range, Proofex Torchseal 3SI Standard is the 3mm slate-finished, exposed-roof option. Step up to Proofex Torchseal 4S/5S for thicker, higher-duty tanking under aggressive ground water, or choose an aluminium/mineral-faced or sanded variant where a different top finish is required. Where torch hot-works are prohibited or detailing is congested, pair or substitute it with a liquid-applied Fosroc system such as Brushbond (cementitious-acrylic) or a Nitoproof membrane. Against competitors, 3SI sits in the same class as STP Ltd’s torch-applied bituminous membranes, Sika’s Bitumeric/SBS torch-on sheets, and the membrane lines from MBS (My Building Shop) brands; for liquid roofing many Indian clients also weigh Dr. Fixit (Pidilite) acrylic and PU coatings. Honestly assessed, 3SI is a strong, value-engineered, distributor-backed sheet membrane for large planar roofs, podiums and tanking where speed, factory-controlled thickness and a UV-resistant finish matter; it is less suited to flame-restricted sites or detail-heavy areas, where a liquid-applied alternative should be considered.
