Fosroc Renderoc FCR
Fast-setting, polymer-modified cementitious fairing coat for blemish-free vertical and overhead concrete surfaces before protective coating.
What is it?
A single-component, polymer-modified, fast-setting cementitious fairing coat (skim mortar) supplied as a pre-bagged powder that needs only clean water on site. It fills blowholes, honeycombing and shallow surface voids to produce a smooth, fair-faced concrete surface ready for a protective or decorative coating.
Where is it used?
On vertical and overhead, non-trafficked concrete – precast yards, bridge soffits and piers, basement and tunnel walls, water-tank and STP structures, facades and parking structures across Delhi NCR and pan-India.
Why use it?
Its rapid 25-50 minute set lets a precast or repair crew fair, finish and move on within the same shift, while polymer modification gives extremely low permeability to water, CO2 and chlorides – so the cosmetic coat also adds durability protection.
How is it applied?
Saturate the cleaned, sound substrate to SSD, mix the powder with clean water to a thixotropic paste, then apply by steel trowel from a feather edge up to 20 mm deep, finishing smooth before overcoating with a Dekguard anti-carbonation system.
About Fosroc Renderoc FCR
Fosroc Renderoc FCR is the fast-setting member of the Renderoc fairing-coat family, engineered for the cosmetic correction of concrete surfaces that will later be protected or decorated. Cast concrete almost never comes out of the formwork perfect – blowholes, bug-holes, minor honeycombing, tie-bolt scars, grout loss and arris damage are routine, especially on precast panels and dense reinforced sections. Left exposed, these defects are not just unsightly; they are direct pathways for water, chloride and carbon dioxide ingress that accelerate carbonation and reinforcement corrosion. Renderoc FCR is the thin-section mortar that closes those pathways and gives the structure a uniform, fair-faced finish in a single pass.
The product is a ready-to-use blend of cements, graded aggregates, special fillers and chemical additives, requiring only the site addition of clean water. The polymer modification is the key to its performance: it lowers water demand, develops a tenacious bond to the parent concrete, and produces a cured matrix with extremely low permeability to water, carbon dioxide and chlorides. It contains no chloride admixtures, so it will not introduce aggressive ions into the repair zone. The mortar is thixotropic, meaning it holds its shape on vertical and overhead surfaces without slump – critical when you are skimming a soffit or an upside-down precast face.
What sets FCR apart from the standard Renderoc FC is speed and build. Where FC is limited to roughly 3 mm thin-section work, Renderoc FCR is formulated to infill honeycombing and voids from a feather edge up to 20 mm deep, and it sets fast – in the region of 25 to 50 minutes – so a precast manufacturer can fair, finish and de-mould within the same production cycle instead of losing a day to slow cement hydration. For Indian precast yards, tunnel-segment plants and fast-track infrastructure sites where casting turnaround drives the whole programme, that rapid set is the commercial reason to choose FCR over a conventional fairing coat. It is fully compatible with the wider Renderoc repair-mortar system and with Fosroc’s Dekguard protective and anti-carbonation coatings, so it slots cleanly into a complete, single-source repair-and-protect specification.
The technical insight
Renderoc FCR sits in the EN 1504-3 concrete-repair framework as a non-structural / cosmetic fairing mortar (repair principle for surface reinstatement, method 3.1), in the same family as Renderoc FC which is classified to EN 1504-3 Class R2 (compressive strength greater than 15 MPa, pull-off adhesion greater than 0.8 MPa, chloride ion content less than 0.05%). The engineering point for specifiers is that a fairing coat is deliberately low-modulus and lightweight – it is a thin skin, not a structural patch. Its job is thermal and dimensional compatibility with the substrate plus a low-permeability barrier, not load transfer. That is exactly why FCR carries explicit limitations: it must not be used in trafficked areas, must not be exposed to moving water during application, and must be overcoated – it is a base layer in a protect-and-decorate system, not a finished wearing surface. Because the polymer-modified matrix is impermeable to acid gases and waterborne chloride ions, the fairing coat does meaningful durability work in addition to its cosmetic role, retarding the carbonation front and chloride diffusion that drive rebar corrosion in Indian coastal, industrial and de-iced environments. The fast set is achieved through the cement/additive blend rather than added chlorides, preserving the passivation chemistry around embedded steel.
Where it is used
- Filling blowholes, bug-holes and surface honeycombing on precast concrete panels, beams and columns during manufacture
- Cosmetic fairing of cast in-situ concrete – soffits, walls, columns – to a fair-faced finish before coating
- Reinstating the surface profile after patch repairs with structural Renderoc mortars, blending repair and parent concrete
- Overhead and vertical skim coating of bridge soffits, piers and parapets ahead of an anti-carbonation coating
- Surface preparation of facade, basement and parking-structure concrete to receive Dekguard or decorative coatings
- Rapid appearance correction on fast-track precast and segment-casting lines where same-shift turnaround is essential
Key advantages
- Fast set (approximately 25-50 minutes) enables same-shift fairing, finishing and de-moulding on precast lines
- Builds from a feather edge up to 20 mm in a single application – far deeper than a standard 3 mm fairing coat
- Thixotropic, non-slump consistency holds on vertical and overhead surfaces without formwork
- Polymer modification gives extremely low permeability to water, carbon dioxide and chlorides
- Single-component, pre-bagged powder needing only clean water – no site batching errors
- Contains no chloride admixtures and bonds tenaciously to sound concrete
- Excellent thermal compatibility with the concrete substrate, reducing differential-movement cracking
- Fully system-compatible with other Renderoc repair mortars and the Fosroc Dekguard coating range
Limitations & considerations
- Cosmetic / non-structural fairing coat – not a load-bearing or structural repair mortar; use Renderoc S, HB or ST 05 for those
- Maximum build is about 20 mm; deeper voids must be first filled with a body repair mortar in separate lifts
- Must not be used on trafficked or wearing surfaces (specify Renderoc ST 05 instead)
- Must be overcoated with Dekguard or an equivalent protective/decorative coating – it is not a finished exposed surface
- Rapid set shortens working/pot life, so only mix what can be applied and finished within minutes, especially in Indian summer heat
- Not for application onto moving water or where heavy rainfall is imminent before final set
- Requires a properly cleaned, sound, saturated-surface-dry substrate – bond and durability depend on preparation
Selection & best practice
Treat substrate preparation as non-negotiable: remove all dust, laitance, oil, grease, paint and unsound concrete by light scabbling or grit-blasting, blow clean with oil-free air, then bring the surface to saturated-surface-dry (thoroughly soaked, no free standing water) immediately before application. Mix only the quantity you can trowel and finish before the fast set takes hold – in NCR summer conditions store the bags in shade and use cool water, and expect working time at the short end of the range. Always add powder to water (never the reverse), mix to a uniform thixotropic paste, and do not re-temper with extra water once it starts to stiffen. Build deeper voids in lifts and let the FCR partly set before final smooth-trowelling. Crucially, protect the cosmetic value of the work by following with a Dekguard anti-carbonation coating once cured – the fairing coat is the base of a protect-and-decorate system, and the coating is what locks in long-term carbonation and chloride resistance.

How we position Fosroc Renderoc FCR
Renderoc FCR is best understood as the fast-track, deeper-build sibling of Renderoc FC within Fosroc’s fairing-coat line, and as the cosmetic finishing layer that complements structural Renderoc mortars – Renderoc S and Renderoc HB for hand-applied body repairs, Renderoc ST 05 for trafficked or high-strength zones – with the whole repair then sealed under a Dekguard anti-carbonation coating and cured with Nitobond AR. For Space Arc clients in Delhi NCR and across India, FCR earns its place wherever casting turnaround or surface appearance is on the critical path, especially precast and segment-casting yards. Credible alternatives a specifier may evaluate include Sika’s MonoTop and SikaTop fairing/levelling mortars, MBCC/Master Builders Solutions MasterEmaco fairing coats, Dr. Fixit’s Krishna/repair-mortar range for cost-sensitive jobs, and STP Limited’s repair-mortar systems. The honest case for FCR is system integration and rapid set: when the rest of the repair-and-protect specification is already Fosroc, matching the fairing coat to the same Renderoc/Dekguard chemistry removes compatibility risk and keeps the structure under a single warranty and single technical source. As an authorised Fosroc distributor and applicator, Space Arc Engineering supplies Renderoc FCR with the matching primers, structural mortars and protective coatings, plus application support, so the cosmetic coat performs as a durability layer and not just a cover-up.
