Fosroc Renderoc FCXtra
Single-component, polymer-modified cementitious fairing coat and cosmetic mortar for blemish-free concrete surfaces ahead of protective coatings.
What is it?
A ready-to-use, single-component polymer-modified cementitious fairing coat, pinhole filler and cosmetic mortar that needs only site-added clean water. It is the enhanced (Xtra) grade in Fosroc’s Renderoc FC fairing-coat family.
Where is it used?
On vertical and overhead concrete and masonry surfaces that must be made smooth and fair-faced before a decorative or anti-carbonation protective coating, typically as the final cosmetic layer in a concrete repair and rehabilitation system.
Why use it?
It blockfills blowholes, bugholes and shallow surface imperfections without an independent primer and without a separate curing step, giving a shrinkage-compensated, dust-free, smooth finish that bonds strongly to the substrate and is fully compatible with Renderoc repair mortars and Dekguard coatings.
How is it applied?
Mix the dry powder with clean water to a smooth consistency, then trowel-apply over the prepared substrate from a feather-edge up to 6 mm in a single operation, filling voids up to 6 mm deep, and finish to a smooth surface ready for over-coating.
About Fosroc Renderoc FCXtra
Fosroc Renderoc FCXtra is the cosmetic finishing member of the Renderoc concrete repair range — the product applied after the structural repair is done, when the surface still carries the visible scars of the job: blowholes, bugholes, pinholes, form-tie marks, tooling lines and shallow honeycombing. It is a single-component, polymer-modified cementitious mortar supplied as a pre-blended dry powder of cements, graded fine aggregates, special fillers and chemical additives. On site it requires only the addition of clean water to produce a highly consistent, low-water-demand mortar, which removes the batching variability that plagues hand-gauged sand-cement renders. As an “Xtra” grade it is formulated for vertical and overhead use, filling voids up to 6 mm deep and rendering large areas from a feather-edge up to 6 mm thickness in a single pass. For Indian repair contractors and consultants, that wider build is the practical advantage over the standard Renderoc FC fairing coat, which is generally limited to about 3 mm per pass. The product is shrinkage-compensated so it cures without the map-cracking or surface dusting typical of cheap skim coats, and it is engineered to bond directly to a sound, prepared concrete substrate without a separate bonding primer and, in moderate ambient conditions, without a separate curing regime — two steps that ordinarily slow down a finishing crew. It is thermally compatible with the parent concrete and fully compatible with the rest of the Renderoc mortar family and with Fosroc’s Dekguard range of protective, anti-carbonation and decorative coatings, so it slots cleanly into a specified repair-and-protect system rather than being an isolated cosmetic. In short, Renderoc FCXtra is what turns a structurally sound but visually rough repair into a uniform, fair-faced surface that is genuinely ready to receive a high-performance coating — the difference between a repair that merely works and one that looks right and protects properly.
The technical insight
Renderoc FCXtra belongs to the same fairing-coat lineage as Fosroc Renderoc FC, which is classified to BS EN 1504-3 as a Class R2 (non-structural) repair mortar — meaning it is intentionally a cosmetic/cover layer, not a load-bearing reprofiling mortar. The headline design parameter is thickness control: the polymer-modified, low-water-demand formulation is built for thin-section work (feather-edge up to 6 mm on FCXtra; voids to 6 mm deep), and applying it thicker than its design range is the single most common cause of cracking and debonding. The polymer modification does the heavy lifting — it gives extremely low permeability to water, carbon dioxide and chlorides (the same mechanism that protects the underlying steel in a carbonation/chloride repair) plus strong adhesion, which is why no independent primer is needed on a properly prepared surface. Where higher compressive strength, traffic resistance or low permeability under structural load is required, FCXtra is the wrong tool: Fosroc directs users to reprofiling/structural grades such as Renderoc RP or hand-placed Renderoc HSXtra instead. Two engineering caveats matter most. First, FCXtra is a cover coat, not a moisture barrier in itself — it must be over-coated with the Dekguard range (or a suitable equivalent anti-carbonation coating) to deliver the long-term protection the repair system was designed for. Second, like all cementitious fairing coats it is sensitive to drying conditions: in strong wind, low humidity or high temperature (common across Delhi NCR summers and coastal sites), supplementary curing with a curing membrane such as Nitobond AR or polythene sheeting becomes necessary even though “no curing” is the normal-condition claim.
Where it is used
- Filling blowholes, bugholes, pinholes and form-tie marks on cast in-situ and precast concrete before coating
- Producing a fair-faced, blemish-free finish on concrete and masonry ahead of decorative or anti-carbonation coatings
- Cosmetic make-good of shallow honeycombing and minor surface imperfections up to 6 mm deep
- Rendering and levelling large vertical and overhead concrete areas from a feather-edge up to 6 mm
- Final cover/fairing layer over Renderoc structural and reprofiling repair mortars in a patch-repair system
- Surface preparation of soffits, columns, beams, facades and water-retaining structure exteriors prior to Dekguard protective coatings
Key advantages
- Single component — only clean water added on site, eliminating site-batching variation and inconsistent mixes
- Shrinkage compensated, so it cures without map-cracking or surface dusting
- No independent primer required on a sound, prepared substrate — saving a coat and labour
- No separate curing needed in moderate ambient conditions, speeding up the finishing cycle
- Builds from a feather-edge up to 6 mm and fills voids up to 6 mm deep — wider than the standard Renderoc FC fairing coat
- Excellent bond to concrete and excellent thermal compatibility with the parent substrate
- Smooth, fair-faced finish ideal for receiving decorative and anti-carbonation coatings
- Fully compatible with the Renderoc mortar range and the Dekguard protective coating range for a single-source specified system
- Polymer modification gives low permeability to water, carbon dioxide and chlorides
Limitations & considerations
- Non-structural (BS EN 1504-3 Class R2 family) cosmetic/fairing coat — not a load-bearing or structural reprofiling mortar
- Limited to thin sections (feather-edge up to 6 mm per application / voids up to 6 mm deep); deeper or larger repairs need Renderoc RP, HSXtra or similar
- Lightweight, cosmetic nature means it should not be used in trafficked areas or where abrasion/impact is expected
- Must be over-coated with Dekguard or an equivalent protective coating to deliver long-term anti-carbonation/chloride protection
- Should not be applied below 5 degrees C and falling, and needs supplementary curing in strong drying conditions (high wind, low humidity, high heat)
- Should not be exposed to moving water or heavy rainfall before final set, which can cause surface scour
- Requires correctly prepared, sound, clean substrate to develop its primer-free bond
Selection & best practice
Treat Renderoc FCXtra strictly as a finishing coat within a complete repair system, not a stand-alone fix. Complete and cure the structural/reprofiling repair first, then prepare the surface so it is sound, clean and free of laitance, dust, oil and curing compound. Add the powder to clean water (never the reverse) and mix with a forced-action mixer or a slow-speed heavy-duty drill with a mixing paddle to a smooth, lump-free consistency; do not exceed the recommended water dosage and do not re-temper with extra water once stiffened. Apply by steel trowel within the working life, respecting the feather-edge-to-6 mm thickness limit — for deeper voids, fill in a prior operation rather than over-building in one pass. Finish smooth, then in hot, windy or low-humidity Indian site conditions protect and cure with a curing membrane such as Nitobond AR or polythene sheeting. Always over-coat with the Dekguard range (or a specified equivalent) to lock in carbonation and chloride protection, and confirm batch, pack date and shelf life before use. How we position Fosroc Renderoc FCXtra
Renderoc FCXtra sits at the finishing end of Fosroc’s concrete repair system and is best specified alongside the products that come before and after it: structural and reprofiling mortars such as Renderoc HSXtra, Renderoc RP and Renderoc GP for the body of the repair; Nitobond AR as a curing membrane or bonding aid; and the Dekguard range of anti-carbonation/decorative coatings as the protective top layer it is designed to receive. Compared with its sibling Renderoc FC, FCXtra is the higher-build choice — feather-edge to 6 mm rather than roughly 3 mm — which makes it the more forgiving option on rougher precast or formed surfaces. Against the broader market, credible alternatives an Indian specifier may evaluate include Sika MonoTop and SikaTop fairing/skim coats, MBS (MBCC/Master Builders) MasterEmaco fairing coats, STP and Dr. Fixit cementitious skim/fairing products, and BASF-lineage repair systems. Where the deciding factors are full BS EN 1504-3 system compatibility, single-source warranty alignment with Dekguard protective coatings, and consistent availability through an authorised channel, Renderoc FCXtra is the natural fit. As an authorised Fosroc distributor and applicator serving Delhi NCR and Pan-India, Space Arc Engineering can supply genuine Renderoc FCXtra, confirm the correct grade for your repair class, and specify the matching primer, structural mortar and Dekguard coating so the cosmetic finish and the long-term protection are designed as one system rather than bought piecemeal.
