What is it?

A single-component, cementitious, fibre-reinforced high-build repair mortar conforming to BS EN 1504-3 Class R4 — supplied as a pre-blended dry powder needing only clean water on site.

Where is it used?

Patch repair and reinstatement of spalled, carbonated or chloride-damaged reinforced concrete on vertical and soffit (overhead) surfaces — bridges, flyovers, water structures, industrial frames, façades and basements.

Why use it?

It builds in thick sections (up to ~60 mm vertical, ~50 mm overhead) in a single pass without formwork, is shrinkage-compensated, and develops high strength with low permeability for durable structural repairs.

How is it applied?

The blasted, saturated-surface-dry substrate is primed (Renderoc Primer; exposed steel with Nitoprime Zincrich Plus), then the gauged mortar is applied by gloved hand, trowel or wet-spray and cured.

About Fosroc Renderoc HBS

Fosroc Renderoc HBS is a high-performance, fibre-reinforced, high-build concrete reinstatement mortar designed for the structural repair of high-strength reinforced concrete. It belongs to Fosroc’s well-known Renderoc family of patch-repair mortars and is positioned as the “high-build” (HB) grade with enhanced strength — hence the “S” suffix. It is supplied as a ready-to-use blend of Portland cement, graded aggregates, selected fillers, reinforcing fibres and performance additives; only clean water is added on site to produce a cohesive, low-slump mortar with good handling characteristics.

The defining feature of Renderoc HBS is its ability to be placed in relatively thick sections in a single application without formwork. Its controlled rheology and reinforcing fibres allow it to hold on vertical and overhead surfaces, making it the go-to product where a contractor must rebuild a meaningful depth of lost concrete cover quickly — for example over corroded reinforcement on a bridge soffit or column. Because it is shrinkage-compensated, the risk of drying-shrinkage cracking and debonding from the parent concrete is reduced, and its low permeability to water, carbon dioxide and chlorides helps re-establish the protective environment around embedded steel.

For Indian projects, Renderoc HBS sits squarely in the BS EN 1504 concrete-repair framework that consultants increasingly specify alongside IS codes. It is intended for use as part of a complete repair system: reinforcement priming, the repair mortar itself, and a protective anti-carbonation or anti-corrosion coating to complete the durability cycle. Space Arc Engineering supplies and applies Renderoc HBS as an authorised Fosroc distributor and applicator across Delhi NCR and Pan-India.

The technical insight

Renderoc HBS is classified as BS EN 1504-3 Class R4 — the highest structural-repair class — meaning it is intended for load-bearing reinstatement, not merely cosmetic patching. The “HB” (high build) character is what distinguishes it from thinner-section mortars: it is engineered to be placed at substantial thickness per pass, with published single-application limits in the region of up to ~60 mm on vertical faces and up to ~50 mm overhead (some regional datasheets quote more conservative 40 mm / 30 mm limits — always confirm against the local TDS for your batch). Two design choices make this possible: a graded aggregate skeleton plus lightweight fillers that keep the fresh wet density and slump-down tendency low, and polypropylene-type reinforcing fibres that hold the wet mortar in place and bridge micro-cracks during early curing. The low water demand of the formulation is the key to durability — less mixing water means higher strength gain, lower permeability and better long-term protection of the reinforcement. It is chloride-free by formulation, which is essential when repairing structures already suffering chloride-induced corrosion.

Where it is used

  • Repair of spalled and delaminated concrete cover over corroded reinforcement on bridges, flyovers and elevated structures
  • Reinstatement of carbonation- and chloride-damaged columns, beams and slab soffits
  • Vertical and overhead patch repairs where formwork is impractical or uneconomical
  • Repair of water-retaining and water-excluding structures such as reservoirs, sumps and basements (used within a full system)
  • Industrial and process-plant concrete frame and structural repairs
  • Façade, parapet and cornice reinstatement on commercial and heritage buildings
  • Marine and coastal structure repairs subject to chloride attack
  • Large-area mechanised repairs applied by wet-spray for productivity

Key advantages

  • BS EN 1504-3 Class R4 — suitable for structural, load-bearing repair
  • High-build application up to ~60 mm vertical and ~50 mm overhead in a single pass without formwork
  • Shrinkage-compensated to minimise cracking and maintain bond to the parent concrete
  • Fibre reinforcement improves green strength, hold and crack resistance
  • Low permeability to water, CO2 and chlorides — protects embedded steel and resists re-carbonation
  • Chloride-free formulation, safe for use on reinforced and chloride-contaminated structures
  • Single-component, pre-bagged — only clean water added on site, reducing batching error
  • Can be applied by gloved hand, trowel or wet-spray for both small patches and large areas

Limitations & considerations

  • Requires thorough substrate preparation — sound, roughened, saturated-surface-dry concrete with exposed and primed reinforcement
  • Not a self-levelling product; designed for vertical/overhead, not deep horizontal pours (use a flowable micro-concrete such as Renderoc RG/HG for those)
  • Single-layer thickness is limited; deeper repairs must be built up in layers or formed, extending programme time
  • Sensitive to over-watering — excess gauging water reduces strength and increases shrinkage
  • Should be protected from rapid drying; proper curing is essential, especially in hot, windy Indian site conditions
  • Performs best as part of a full Fosroc system (primer + repair mortar + protective coating); used alone it does not provide a finished protective surface
  • Working/pot life is limited once gauged and shortens further at high ambient temperatures

Selection & best practice

Cut out all unsound concrete to a square edge and break out behind corroded reinforcement to allow full encapsulation. Grit-blast or mechanically clean exposed steel to bright metal and prime with Nitoprime Zincrich Plus. Saturate the prepared concrete to a saturated-surface-dry (SSD) condition, then scrub Renderoc Primer (or the locally specified bonding slurry) into the substrate and apply the mortar wet-on-wet. Gauge with only the datasheet quantity of clean water, mix mechanically with a slow-speed paddle, and apply within the working life. For depths beyond the single-pass limit, build up in layers, scratch-keying each lift. Cure with Concure curing compound or wet hessian and polythene — particularly important in Delhi NCR summers — and finish with an anti-carbonation/protective coating (e.g. Dekguard) to complete the durability system. Always confirm exact mixing, thickness and coverage figures against the current India TDS for your batch.

Frequently asked questions

Is Fosroc Renderoc HBS a structural repair mortar?
Yes. It is classified as BS EN 1504-3 Class R4, the highest structural-repair class, so it is suitable for load-bearing reinstatement of reinforced concrete — not just cosmetic patching.
How thick can Renderoc HBS be applied in one coat?
As a high-build mortar it can typically be placed up to around 60 mm on vertical surfaces and around 50 mm overhead in a single application without formwork. Some regional datasheets quote more conservative limits (40 mm / 30 mm), so always confirm the figure on your local India TDS. Greater depths are built up in layers.
What is the difference between Renderoc HB and Renderoc HBS?
Both are high-build vertical/overhead repair mortars. The HBS grade is the high-strength variant in the family, engineered for higher-strength concrete substrates (35–60 N/mm²) and structural R4 applications, with fibre reinforcement for hold and crack resistance.
Does Renderoc HBS need a primer?
Yes, for best results. Exposed reinforcement should be primed with Nitoprime Zincrich Plus, and the prepared concrete substrate should be saturated and treated with Renderoc Primer or a bonding slurry, applying the mortar wet-on-wet.
Can it be spray-applied for large repairs?
Yes. While small patches are placed by gloved hand or trowel, Renderoc HBS can be applied efficiently by wet-spray techniques on larger areas, improving productivity on big repair programmes.
Is Renderoc HBS suitable for water-retaining structures and is it chloride-free?
It is chloride-free by formulation and has low permeability, making it appropriate for use on water-retaining and chloride-affected structures when used within a complete Fosroc repair-and-protect system.

How we position Fosroc Renderoc HBS

Renderoc HBS is the high-build, high-strength workhorse of Fosroc’s Renderoc concrete-repair range, sitting between the standard Renderoc HB and the lighter or flowable grades. Where a repair needs to be poured or pumped into a deep, formed section, contractors typically move to a flowable micro-concrete such as Fosroc Renderoc RG or HG; where only a thin reprofiling skim is required, Renderoc S or Renderoc FC fairing coat is more appropriate. A complete Fosroc system usually pairs HBS with Nitoprime Zincrich Plus on the steel and a Dekguard anti-carbonation coating for protection. In the Indian market it competes directly with Sika MonoTop and SikaRep structural repair mortars, MBS (MYK Arment) repair mortars, Dr. Fixit Pidicrete / Krishna structural repair mortars, and STP (Shalimar) repair systems — most of which offer comparable EN 1504-3 R3/R4 grades. Fosroc’s edge for Indian consultants is the maturity and familiarity of the Renderoc system specification and consistent local availability; the right choice ultimately depends on the specified repair class, required single-pass thickness, and whether hand/spray or flowable placement suits the geometry. Space Arc Engineering can advise on the correct grade and supply the full system across Delhi NCR and Pan-India.
