Fosroc Renderoc LAF
A pourable, self-compacting microconcrete that reinstates large or congested concrete sections where hand-applied mortars cannot reach.
What is it?
A single-component, pre-bagged free-flowing microconcrete based on Portland cement, graded aggregates and a dual expansion system. Mixed with only clean site water, it produces a self-compacting, shrinkage-compensated repair concrete.
Where is it used?
Structural reinstatement of reinforced concrete columns, beams, soffits, pile heads and other sections where access is restricted, reinforcement is congested, or the volume is too large for trowel-applied mortars.
Why use it?
It flows and self-compacts into formwork without vibration, compensates for shrinkage, and delivers high strength with low permeability for durable protection of embedded steel against chlorides, carbon dioxide and sulphate attack.
How is it applied?
Break out and prepare the section, fix tight formwork with pour/vent points, pre-soak the substrate, mix one full bag with clean water in a forced-action mixer, then pour or pump the microconcrete continuously and cure.
About Fosroc Renderoc LAF
Fosroc Renderoc LAF is a free-flowing micro-concrete from the Fosroc Renderoc concrete-repair family, engineered for situations where conventional hand- or trowel-applied repair mortars simply cannot do the job. It is supplied as a ready-to-use blend of dry powders that needs only the site addition of clean water to produce a flowable, shrinkage-compensated repair concrete that can be poured or pumped into place. The “LAF” designation reflects its role as the free-flowing, large-area microconcrete in the Renderoc range, complementing the trowel-grade Renderoc mortars used for smaller, hand-applied patch repairs.\n\nThe product is designed for two broad situations. The first is the reinstatement of large, structural sections of concrete – reinstating section depth on columns, beams, retaining walls and similar elements where the repair volume is substantial. The second is the many smaller locations where difficulties of access, congested reinforcement, or a confined pour make hand or trowel application impractical. In both cases the self-compacting, free-flowing nature of Renderoc LAF allows the material to fill the prepared formwork, encapsulate the reinforcement and displace air without the honeycombing risk that comes with stiffer, hand-packed materials.\n\nFor Indian conditions – high ambient temperatures, marine and coastal chloride exposure along both coasts, sulphate-bearing soils and groundwater across large parts of the country, and the carbonation-driven corrosion seen in older urban RCC stock – Renderoc LAF is positioned as a durable, low-permeability reinstatement material. It is alkaline in nature and helps re-passivate and protect the embedded steel, and its resistance to sulphates makes it suitable for repairs below ground and in aggressive soil/water environments. A corrosion-inhibitor-modified variant, Renderoc LAF-IC, is also offered for situations where additional protection of the reinforcement is specified.\n\nAs an authorised Fosroc distributor serving Delhi NCR and Pan-India, Space Arc Engineering supplies Renderoc LAF together with the associated Fosroc system products – reinforcement primers, bonding aids, curing membranes and anti-carbonation coatings – so that a specified repair can be detailed, supplied and supported as a complete system rather than a single bagged product.
The technical insight
The defining feature of Renderoc LAF is its dual expansion system. Ordinary cementitious repair materials shrink as they cure, and in a confined, formed pour that shrinkage tends to pull the new material away from the parent concrete and from the back of the reinforcement, leaving voids and a weak bond plane. Renderoc LAF incorporates additives that impart controlled expansion in both the plastic state (before the material sets) and the hardened state (during early strength gain). The plastic-state expansion keeps the fresh microconcrete in intimate contact with the substrate and steel while it is still fluid; the hardened-state component compensates for drying shrinkage so the cured repair stays in compression against the parent concrete rather than debonding. The result is a void-free, monolithic repair without the honeycombing that vibration is normally used to eliminate – which matters precisely in the congested, hard-to-vibrate sections this product is made for. Combined with a Portland-cement matrix of low water demand and graded aggregate, this gives a dense, low-permeability hardened concrete that severely retards the ingress of chloride ions, carbon dioxide and oxygen – the three drivers of reinforcement corrosion. Because it is a pourable microconcrete rather than a thixotropic mortar, placement is governed by formwork design and pump/pour logistics: tight, sealed shutters with dedicated pour points and air vents, continuous placing within the working window, and proper substrate pre-soaking are what determine whether the material’s flow and expansion advantages are actually realised on site.
Where it is used
- Reinstatement of large structural sections of reinforced concrete (columns, beams, walls, soffits) where the repair volume exceeds what hand-applied mortars can handle
- Repairs in locations with congested or closely spaced reinforcement where a trowel cannot work the material behind the bars
- Confined or restricted-access repairs where the section is formed and the material must be poured or pumped into place
- Pile heads, pile caps and below-ground elements exposed to sulphate-bearing soils and groundwater
- Marine and coastal structures, jetties and water-retaining structures requiring low chloride permeability
- Reinstatement of carbonation-damaged or chloride-contaminated RCC in bridges, flyovers and industrial structures
- Encasement and section enlargement around existing reinforcement as part of a strengthening or rehabilitation scheme
Key advantages
- Free-flowing and self-compacting – fills congested, restricted formwork and displaces air without vibration
- Dual expansion system compensates for shrinkage in both the plastic and hardened states, preventing debonding and voids
- High strength with low permeability gives strong protection against chloride and carbon-dioxide-driven reinforcement corrosion
- Resistant to sulphates, suiting below-ground and aggressive soil/water exposure common across India
- Alkaline matrix helps protect and re-passivate embedded steel reinforcement
- Pre-bagged factory blend – only clean site water is added, eliminating site-batching variation
- Can be placed by either pouring or pumping, giving flexibility for difficult-access locations
- Bonds strongly to a properly prepared concrete substrate, typically without a separate slurry primer
- Available in a corrosion-inhibitor-modified variant (Renderoc LAF-IC) where extra reinforcement protection is specified
Limitations & considerations
- Requires formwork – it is a poured/pumped microconcrete, not a trowel-applied patch mortar, so shuttering must be designed, sealed and provided with pour and vent points
- Performance depends on correct, complete mixing with a forced-action mixer and the exact specified water content; under-mixing or excess water sharply reduces strength and durability
- The substrate must be sound, clean and pre-soaked to a saturated surface-dry condition before placing, or the repair will lose water and bond poorly
- Not intended for thin, feather-edged or very shallow repairs – a minimum broken-out depth and square edges are required; thin applications need a trowel-grade Renderoc instead
- Continuous placing is needed within the working window to gain full benefit of fluidity and the expansion process – interrupted pours risk cold joints and blockages when pumping
- High-temperature placing in Indian summers requires shaded storage, cool mixing water and disciplined curing to avoid rapid moisture loss and cracking
- As with all cementitious repairs, immediate and sustained curing is essential; skipped curing undermines the low-permeability benefit
- It restores durability and section, but does not by itself add structural capacity beyond reinstatement – genuine strengthening needs a designed scheme
Selection & best practice
Treat Renderoc LAF as a formed-and-poured system, not just a bag of powder. Break out the repair to a sound, square-edged perimeter (avoid feather edges), expose and clean the reinforcement to a bright condition, and prime exposed steel with Fosroc Nitoprime Zincrich Plus where it will remain at risk. Build rigid, tightly sealed formwork with sealed faces, dedicated pour points and air vents at high points, and pre-soak the substrate by filling the shutter with clean water several hours before placing, removing free water immediately before the pour. Mix one full bag at a time in a forced-action mixer (never free-fall mixers, never part bags) using exactly the specified clean water, adding powder to water and mixing to a smooth, uniform consistency. Pour or pump continuously and place within the working window to capture the full fluidity and expansion benefit; when pumping, prime the line and keep a continuous supply to avoid blockage. Strip formwork only after adequate early strength, then cure immediately and continuously with a Fosroc curing membrane (and polythene in fast-drying conditions). In aggressive or carbonating environments, overcoat the surrounding structure with a Fosroc Dekguard anti-carbonation coating to bring it up to the same protective standard as the repair. Always confirm the current product technical data sheet and exact mixing water, thickness and pack figures from Fosroc or Space Arc before specifying.

How we position Fosroc Renderoc LAF
Within the Fosroc range, Renderoc LAF is the free-flowing, formed-and-poured micro-concrete for larger or congested structural reinstatement, sitting alongside trowel-grade Renderoc mortars (such as Renderoc S and Renderoc HS for hand-applied patch repairs) and the closely related low-alkali micro-concrete Renderoc LA. Where the priority is minimising alkali-silica reaction risk, Renderoc LA is the natural sibling; where extra reinforcement protection is wanted, the corrosion-inhibitor variant Renderoc LAF-IC applies; and for pourable non-shrink grouting around plant and anchors, the Conbextra grout range is the correct Fosroc choice rather than a repair micro-concrete. Against competitor systems, Renderoc LAF competes with Sika MonoTop and SikaGrout micro-concretes, MBS (MYK/BASF-lineage) flowable repair concretes, STP (Saint-Gobain) repair micro-concretes, and Dr. Fixit Pidicrete/Pidacril repair products. Honestly, the choice between these brands is usually driven less by raw datasheet figures – they cluster around the same BS EN 1504-3 structural-repair class – and more by specifier preference, local availability, approved-applicator support and the rest of the system being used on a project. Dr. Fixit, for example, is often strongest where the wider waterproofing system is already Pidilite-based, while Fosroc’s strength is its long-established repair-and-protection ecosystem (primers, bonding aids, curing and Dekguard anti-carbonation coatings). For specifications already standardised on Fosroc, or projects needing a proven free-flowing micro-concrete for congested, restricted-access structural repair, Renderoc LAF is a well-positioned, durable choice – and exact mix, thickness and strength values should always be confirmed against the current Fosroc TDS before specifying.
