About Fosroc Renderoc Plug 20
Fosroc Renderoc Plug 20 is a factory-blended, single-component plugging mortar engineered to arrest active water ingress in concrete and masonry. It belongs to Fosroc’s Renderoc concrete-repair family but plays a very specific role: it is the “20-minute” grade in a two-part offering, the faster sibling being Renderoc Plug 1 (roughly one-minute set). The “20” denotes its approximate initial setting time of 20 minutes at a substrate and ambient temperature of 20°C, which gives applicators enough working time to mix, pack and shape the mortar before it locks off — unlike the flash-set Plug 1, which is reserved for gushing leaks where there is no time to spare.\n\nChemically, Renderoc Plug 20 is a blend of Portland cement, specially graded fine aggregates and proprietary set-accelerating and water-resisting additives. It is supplied chloride-free, which is critical in India where reinforced concrete in coastal Mumbai, Chennai or Kochi is already under chloride attack; adding a chloride-bearing plug at a repair point would worsen rebar corrosion. The product develops strength quickly — a useful 7 MPa within 6 hours, around 11 MPa at one day and approximately 45 MPa at 28 days — so a sealed leak can be over-coated or back-filled the same day. It is also non-combustible (Euroclass A1) and exhibits low exotherm, so even thick plugs do not crack from heat of hydration.\n\nFor Space Arc Engineering’s customers — waterproofing contractors, infrastructure firms, water-board and metro contractors, and facility managers across Delhi NCR and Pan-India — Renderoc Plug 20 is the dependable “first responder” for stopping water before any membrane, injection or cementitious coating system goes on. A leaking construction joint, a weeping tie-rod hole or a seeping crack must be plugged dry before the permanent waterproofing can bond, and that is precisely the job this product was formulated to do.
The technical insight
The performance of Renderoc Plug 20 comes from accelerated, slightly expansive cement hydration. As the mortar sets, it develops a small positive pressure against the walls of the chase or leak path, mechanically wedging itself in place and counteracting the hydrostatic head trying to push it out — this is why it can be packed against running water and still hold. The 20-minute window (versus Plug 1’s flash set) is a deliberate trade-off: it sacrifices instant lock-off for workability, letting the applicator achieve full compaction into an undercut, dovetailed chase so the plug is keyed rather than merely surface-stuck. Because it is tested at a tight water:powder ratio of 1:3 by volume, over-watering is the single most common cause of failure in the field — excess water dilutes the accelerator, delays set, raises porosity and can let the leak re-establish. The chloride-free, low-exotherm chemistry and BS EN 12190 compressive performance (7 MPa @ 6 h, ~45 MPa @ 28 d) confirm it behaves as a structural-grade Class R1 repair mortar once cured, not just a temporary bung.
Where it is used
- Sealing active water leaks and seepage in basement retaining walls, raft slabs and lift/lift-machine pits
- Plugging leaking construction and movement joints before a permanent waterproofing system is applied
- Stopping ingress at tie-rod holes, form-tie pockets and honeycombed pour zones in green or hardened concrete
- Sealing leaks in water-retaining structures, RCC tanks, STP/ETP units and reservoirs (potable-water approved)
- Rapid patching and plugging of tunnel segments, brick/concrete tunnel linings and segment joints
- Arresting seepage in sewers, manholes, below-ground access chambers, pipe penetrations and inspection pits
- Emergency leak control in foundations, pile caps, retaining structures and mine workings
Key advantages
- Rapid initial set of approximately 20 minutes at 20°C — enough working time to pack properly, then a fast lock-off
- Can be applied directly against running or seeping water, sealing the leak as it cures
- Single-component, pre-bagged formulation — only clean water is added on site, eliminating batching errors
- Chloride-free, so it will not promote reinforcement corrosion at the repair point
- Approved for contact with potable water (WRAS / BS 6920:2000) — safe for water tanks and supply structures
- Develops genuine structural strength (~45 MPa at 28 days) and bonds well to the substrate (1.1 MPa pull-off)
- Low exotherm minimises thermal cracking even in thicker plugs; non-combustible (Euroclass A1)
- Conforms to BS EN 1504-3 Class R1, giving a recognised standard for tender and QA documentation
Limitations & considerations
- Not a standalone waterproofing system — it stops point leaks; the structure still needs a membrane or cementitious coating for area protection
- Short pot life once mixed; only small, workable batches should be prepared and over-watering must be avoided
- Minimum applied thickness of 15 mm — not suitable for thin skim or feather-edge repairs
- Bay/section limits apply (max ~0.06 m² per bay, ~0.25 m linear) — large areas must be done in increments, not one mass pour
- Set time lengthens significantly in cold conditions; below about 1°C substrate temperature application is not recommended
- High Indian summer temperatures shorten working time further, demanding very small batches and quick placement
- Requires properly cut, square-sided or undercut chases — smooth, shallow or feather-edged grooves will not retain the plug
- Not designed to accommodate ongoing structural movement; moving cracks need a joint sealant or injection system instead
Selection & best practice
Cut out the leak into a square or undercut (dovetail) chase at least 15 mm deep — never a shallow V-groove — and remove all loose, friable material so the plug can key into sound concrete. Mix only as much as can be placed in a couple of minutes, strictly at 1:3 water:powder by volume to a stiff, mouldable putty; resist the urge to add extra water even against a strong flow. Form the mortar into a ball or plug in a gloved hand, let it begin to warm and stiffen, then press it firmly into the deepest point of the leak and hold under hand pressure until it takes its set. Work from the highest leak downward, plug-by-plug, and once water is stopped and the plug has cured, apply the appropriate Fosroc waterproofing or Renderoc repair system over the area. In hot Indian site conditions keep bags shaded, use cool mixing water and reduce batch size; in cold weather warm the substrate where possible. Always confirm potable-water suitability and cure before returning a water-retaining structure to service.

How we position Fosroc Renderoc Plug 20
Within Fosroc’s range, Renderoc Plug 20 is the workable-set companion to Renderoc Plug 1 (flash-set, ~1 minute) for gushing leaks, and it pairs naturally with downstream systems: Renderoc repair mortars for structural patching, Brushbond / cementitious coatings and Nitoproof / Proofex membranes for area waterproofing, and Conbextra grouts where flowable filling is needed. It is a plugging mortar, not a crack-injection resin — for moving or pressurised cracks, an injectable system is more appropriate. Compared with rival quick-plug mortars commonly specified in India — Sika’s Sika Plug / SikaQuick, MBS (MYK) rapid plugging mortars, Dr. Fixit’s plug/leak-seal products (e.g. LW+/Plugging compounds) and STP (Bostik/Asian Paints) plugging mortars — Renderoc Plug 20 differentiates on its BS EN 1504-3 Class R1 classification, chloride-free formulation, documented ~45 MPa 28-day strength and WRAS/BS 6920 potable-water approval. Space Arc Engineering positions it honestly as a best-in-class first-response leak-stopper that should be followed by a complete waterproofing system, and can cross-supply the matching Fosroc protection products as an authorised distributor across Delhi NCR and Pan-India.
