Spray-Applied Polymer-Modified Repair Mortar for Large-Area Soffit and Vertical Repairs

Authorized Project Distributor — Fosroc India | Space Arc Engineering, Ghaziabad

Product Overview

Renderoc SPL is a spray-applied, polymer-modified, fibre-reinforced, single-component cementitious repair mortar from Fosroc designed for large-area concrete repair using wet-spray (render spray) equipment on overhead soffits, vertical columns, piers, abutments, and large concrete wall faces. For small area and precision repairs, hand-applied mortars are practical — but for large-area repairs covering hundreds of square metres of deteriorated concrete on bridge soffits, viaducts, multi-storey car park soffits, and building facades, hand application is slow, expensive, and produces inconsistent quality. Spray application with Renderoc SPL allows experienced applicators with a rendering machine to achieve 100 to 300 square metres of concrete repair per day — dramatically faster than hand trowelling — while still producing a repair that is structurally effective and durable. Renderoc SPL is specifically formulated for the spray application process: the fine aggregate grading allows the mortar to pass through the spray pump and nozzle without blockage; the fibre reinforcement controls plastic shrinkage cracking that would otherwise be a problem in the large, thin, rapidly drying repair areas produced by spray application; and the polymer modification maintains the adhesion and flexibility of the cured mortar. The product is used on bridge soffit repair projects where large areas of spalled concrete must be reinstated efficiently, on viaducts and elevated highway structures, and on building concrete facades and columns where structural repair must be completed within a tight contract programme. Space Arc Engineering distributes Renderoc SPL for bridge, viaduct, and large infrastructure concrete repair projects across Delhi NCR, Ghaziabad, and Northern India.

Frequently Asked Questions

What spray equipment is required for Renderoc SPL and can standard plastering machines be used?

Renderoc SPL is formulated for application with conventional wet-process render spray equipment — also called plastering machines, render pumps, or mono-pump systems (Putzmeister, m-tec, or equivalent brands). The mortar is mixed to a consistent pumpable consistency and delivered through a hose to a spray gun where it is projected onto the substrate by compressed air. Standard render spray machines are suitable. The pump and hose must be clean and in good condition — any partial blockages or worn pump stators will cause inconsistency in the spray pattern and mortar consistency. The spray gun air pressure and water addition rate must be calibrated before starting, and a test area should be applied and inspected before full production to confirm adhesion, coverage rate, and finish.

Does Renderoc SPL require bonding primer even when spray-applied?

Yes. Renderoc SPL, like all Fosroc Renderoc repair mortars, requires a bonding primer applied to the mechanically prepared substrate before application. Nitobond SBR slurry or Nitobond EP epoxy bonding agent should be applied by brush or roller to the prepared substrate and allowed to become tacky (not dry) before the spray mortar is applied. On large overhead soffit areas, applying the bonding primer over a large area and then spraying the repair mortar over the whole area in sequence — without allowing the primer to dry out before the mortar is applied — requires good crew coordination. Breaking the soffit into sections (priming one section while spraying another) maintains the correct tacky primer condition for the spray mortar.

How are plastic shrinkage cracks in spray-applied repair mortars prevented?

Plastic shrinkage cracking is caused by rapid surface drying of fresh mortar due to high evaporation rate (from hot sun, wind, or low humidity) before the mortar has developed enough tensile strength to resist the drying shrinkage stresses. For spray-applied repairs on large overhead and vertical areas that are exposed to drying conditions, the key prevention measures are: use Renderoc SPL with its integral polypropylene fibre reinforcement (fibres bridge the micro-cracks as they form, limiting their width); protect the fresh mortar from direct sun and wind by erecting temporary shade or windbreak sheeting; mist the fresh mortar surface with water during the first hour after application to slow evaporation; and apply a curing compound (such as Concure WB) as soon as the mortar has lost its initial surface sheen.
