Product Overview
Supercast SW is a hydrophilic chloroprene rubber waterstop for sealing construction joints (cold joints) in below-grade concrete structures. Unlike conventional PVC or rubber dumbbell waterstops that rely on physical embedding in the concrete to form the water seal, Supercast SW uses a hydrophilic mechanism — the chloroprene rubber material swells when in contact with water (up to four times its dry volume), filling the joint interface and creating a tight, compressible, water-resistant seal under hydrostatic pressure. This makes Supercast SW ideal for situations where embedding a dumbbell waterstop in the full joint cross-section is impractical — for example, in heavily reinforced sections, thin elements, or where the joint geometry makes conventional waterstop installation difficult. Supercast SW is simply adhered to the face of the first concrete pour at the construction joint using the specified Supercast adhesive. When the second pour is cast and the construction joint is subsequently wet, the Supercast SW swells to fill the joint width and form a watertight seal. How is Supercast SW installed at a construction joint?
Supercast SW is installed on the face of the first concrete pour at the construction joint location. The concrete surface must be clean and dry. Supercast adhesive is applied to the back of the strip and to the concrete surface, and the strip is pressed into position at the centre of the joint face. The strip must be kept dry until the second pour is cast. When the concrete is poured against it, and when the joint is subsequently exposed to water, the strip swells to fill and seal the joint.
What happens if Supercast SW gets wet before the second concrete pour is cast?
Supercast SW is designed to swell on contact with water. If it gets wet before the second pour, it will swell prematurely and the seal to the first pour face may be compromised. Protect the installed strip from rain and groundwater seepage until the second pour is cast. If premature swelling occurs, the strip must be removed and replaced with a new dry strip before proceeding. Keep materials dry in storage and during installation.
Can Supercast SW be used in construction joints that are subject to significant movement?
Supercast SW is designed for construction joints (non-movement joints where the two concrete pours are bonded together and no intentional movement is expected). For expansion joints or movement joints that must accommodate repeated movement, conventional PVC or rubber dumbbell waterstops (Supercast PVC or Hydrotite) designed for movement accommodation are required.
