What is it?

A highly concentrated liquid stabilising admixture from MC-Bauchemie that temporarily arrests cement hydration in fresh concrete and in ready-mix wash water.

Where is it used?

Ready-mix plants, long-haul and remote pours, night and staged concreting, and tremie or underwater work across Delhi NCR and pan-India projects.

Why use it?

It buys controlled open time without wrecking 28-day strength, and lets plants reuse wash water instead of dumping it — saving cement, water and disposal cost.

How is it applied?

Dosed as a liquid at the batching plant or into the truck drum, matched to the cement content of the mix or wash water, then reactivated simply by adding fresh cementitious material.

About MC-Bauchemie Centrament Stab

Concrete has a clock running from the moment water meets cement, and on a busy site that clock rarely cooperates. A truck stuck in Delhi traffic, a pour that has to wait for the previous lift to be checked, or a wash-out drum that needs emptying at the end of a shift — each of these is a place where hydration keeps advancing whether the crew is ready or not. Centrament Stab is MC-Bauchemie’s answer to that problem: a concentrated liquid admixture, based on hydroxycarboxylic-acid or phosphonate chemistry, that steps in and holds the hydration reaction in a controlled, reversible pause. It does not merely slow the set the way a conventional retarder does; it effectively freezes the cement’s early reaction until you decide to release it.

That reversibility is what sets the product apart in practice. Because the stabilised cement paste stays chemically “asleep” rather than partially reacted, adding fresh cement — either as new concrete batched over recycled wash water, or as the next dose in an extended-workability mix — wakes the system back up cleanly, and the concrete goes on to gain strength normally. For an RMC operation that has to manage returned concrete, drum wash-out and India’s tightening rules on site water discharge, that turns a daily disposal headache into recovered material. For a contractor placing concrete far from the plant, it is the difference between a workable delivery and a load that has to be rejected at the gate.

The technical insight

Ordinary cement hydration begins the instant mixing water contacts the clinker: calcium and silicate ions dissolve and start knitting into the C-S-H gel that gives concrete its strength, while stiffening the paste as it goes. Centrament Stab works by adsorbing onto the surfaces of these freshly exposed, reactive cement grains. The active hydroxycarboxylic-acid or phosphonate molecules form a protective molecular film that blocks water from reaching the reactive sites, so ion dissolution and gel formation are suspended rather than allowed to creep forward. Crucially, this is a holding action, not consumption of the cement — the grains stay reactive underneath the film. When fresh, un-stabilised cement is introduced, it releases enough calcium and hydroxide into the system to overwhelm and displace that protective layer, and hydration resumes across the whole mass. This on/off mechanism is why a load can wait 8 to 24 hours at working dosage yet still reach a 28-day strength comparable to an untreated control, and why wash water carrying stabilised cement fines can be batched straight back into the next mix instead of being wasted.

Where it is used

  • Recycling ready-mix truck and drum wash water back into fresh batches instead of discharging it
  • Stabilising returned or surplus concrete overnight for reuse the next working shift
  • Extending workability on long-haul deliveries to remote and pan-India project sites
  • Holding concrete workable during staged pours, bridge closures and night-time concreting
  • Managing delivery mixes on congested urban sites where trucks face long waiting times
  • Supporting tremie and underwater concrete placements that need a longer open window
  • Buffering against premature stiffening during hot-weather concreting when verified by trial
  • Reducing cement and water wastage as part of an RMC plant’s environmental compliance programme

Key advantages

  • Reversible hydration control — concrete stays genuinely workable, then resumes normal setting once reactivated
  • No significant loss of 28-day compressive strength versus a control mix at correct dosage
  • Turns RMC wash water into a batching resource, cutting fresh water, cement and disposal costs
  • Chloride-free formulation compliant with IS 456 Table 5, safe for reinforced and prestressed work
  • Long working window of 8 to 24 hours at specified dosage, covering most delivery and staging delays
  • Highly concentrated liquid, so dosage volumes stay small and easy to meter at the plant
  • Supports environmental compliance by reducing washout slurry and site water discharge
  • Flexible dosing lets you dial in anything from a couple of hours to a full overnight hold

Limitations & considerations

  • Dosage must be matched to the cement concentration in the wash water or mix — under- or over-dosing gives unpredictable results
  • Wash-water cement concentration should stay within about 300 kg per cubic metre for reliable arresting
  • Recovered wash-water volume has to be accounted for in the batch proportions, or the water-cement ratio drifts
  • At ambient temperatures above 35 degrees Celsius, dosage should be confirmed by site trial before production use
  • It is a hydration stabiliser, not a water reducer or plasticiser — workability and strength targets still need the right base mix design
  • Best results depend on plant discipline and record-keeping; casual or ad-hoc dosing undermines the benefit

Selection & best practice

Start by fixing the dosage to the job, not by habit. For wash-water stabilisation, meter roughly 5 to 20 litres per cubic metre of wash water according to how much cement that water is carrying, keeping the cement concentration within about 300 kg per cubic metre; for extending the workability of a fresh mix, work in the range of about 0.1 to 0.5 percent by mass of cement, choosing the lower end for a couple of hours and the higher end for an overnight hold. Add the product as a liquid at the batching plant or directly into the truck drum and mix thoroughly so it disperses through the load. Always carry the recycled wash-water volume into your batch water calculation so the effective water-cement ratio stays on target. When you reactivate — whether by batching fresh concrete over the stabilised water or dosing the next stage — add sufficient fresh cementitious material to break the hold cleanly. In hot weather above 35 degrees Celsius, run a trial batch first to confirm the arresting time. Store sealed between 5 and 35 degrees Celsius, protect from frost, and use within the 12-month shelf life.

Industry use cases

Ready-Mix Concrete Plants

Recycle drum and truck wash water into fresh batches and stabilise returned concrete overnight, cutting cement, water and slurry-disposal costs while meeting discharge norms.

Infrastructure & Bridges

Hold concrete workable through staged pours, bridge deck closures and night-time concreting where placement cannot follow batching immediately.

Remote & Long-Haul Projects

Keep mixes viable across the long transit times common on pan-India highway, industrial and township sites far from the nearest plant.

Marine & Foundation Works

Extend the open window for tremie and underwater placements so large or deep pours can be completed without premature stiffening.

Congested Urban Sites

Absorb long truck waiting times on tight Delhi NCR sites without rejecting loads, keeping delivery mixes placeable when access finally clears.

Frequently asked questions

Is Centrament Stab just a retarder?
No. A retarder slows the set but lets hydration keep creeping forward, so timing is one-way. Centrament Stab arrests hydration in a reversible pause and reactivates cleanly when fresh cement is added — giving you a controlled on/off hold rather than a slow drift.
Will using it reduce my 28-day strength?
Not at correct dosage. Because the cement is held rather than consumed, once hydration is reactivated the concrete gains strength normally and reaches a 28-day compressive strength comparable to an untreated control mix.
How much should I dose?
It depends on the task. Wash-water stabilisation typically runs 5–20 litres per cubic metre of wash water, matched to its cement content; extending fresh-concrete workability runs about 0.1–0.5% by mass of cement. Match the dose to cement concentration rather than dosing by habit.
Can I really reuse the wash water in new concrete?
Yes — that is a core purpose. Stabilised wash water carrying cement fines can be batched straight back into the next mix, provided its cement concentration stays within about 300 kg per cubic metre and you account for the recovered water volume in your batch proportions.
Is it safe for reinforced and prestressed concrete?
Yes. The formulation is chloride-free and compliant with IS 456 Table 5, so it is suitable for reinforced and prestressed structural work without adding chloride-driven corrosion risk to the steel.
Does it work in Indian summer conditions?
It can, but above about 35°C ambient you should confirm the arresting time with a site trial before production use, since high temperatures accelerate hydration and can shorten the hold you get from a given dosage.

How we position MC-Bauchemie Centrament Stab

Centrament Stab sits in the hydration-control corner of MC-Bauchemie’s admixture range and pairs naturally with the rest of the Centrament family: reach for Centrament Stabi 520 or Stabi 508 when the problem is segregation, bleeding and homogeneity in flowable or lightweight concrete rather than open time, Centrament Stabi M 15 for the cohesion needed in underwater and flowing-water pours, and an MC superplasticiser or PCE water reducer when the mix itself needs workability and strength engineered in. For projects standardised on other brands we stock, Space Arc can also supply equivalent set-control and admixture solutions from Fosroc and Sika, and our team will match the right chemistry to your plant setup and site conditions. As MC-Bauchemie’s authorised distributor and applicator across Delhi NCR and pan-India, we back the product with dosage guidance, trial support and dependable supply.
