MC-Bauchemie MC-DUR 111 D
A water-based, solvent-free two-component epoxy coating that seals concrete floors, tolerates damp substrates, and doubles as a curing membrane on fresh slabs.
What is it?
A two-component, water-based epoxy resin system used both as a protective floor/wall coating and as the resin binder for ECC (epoxy cement composite) repair mortars.
Where is it used?
Industrial and warehouse floors, car parks, garages and petrol stations, food/pharma/chemical processing and bottling plants, bridge decks, and equipment rooms where solvented coatings are unwelcome.
Why use it?
It is solvent-free and low-odour, bonds even to slightly damp concrete, resists diesel, dilute acids/alkalis and many organic solvents once cured, and can also serve as a curing compound on fresh concrete.
How is it applied?
Resin and hardener are power-mixed in the specified ratio, the transparent grade is primed onto a sound, oil-free substrate, and one to two pigmented coats follow within the 24-hour recoat window by brush, roller or airless spray.
About MC-Bauchemie MC-DUR 111 D
MC-DUR 111 D is MC-Bauchemie’s water-based, two-component epoxy resin, built for sites where a conventional solvented epoxy either can’t be used or isn’t worth the risk. It is supplied as a resin and a hardener that are power-mixed on site and applied by brush, roller or airless spray, curing into a hard, chemically resistant film. What sets it apart from ordinary epoxy floor coatings is the water-based carrier: it is virtually solvent-free, low in odour, and, unusually for an epoxy, will key onto concrete that is still slightly damp rather than bone dry. MC-Bauchemie sells it in transparent and pigmented grades, so the same system doubles as a primer/curing membrane and as a coloured wearing coat.
In practice, Space Arc positions MC-DUR 111 D wherever a job needs epoxy performance without epoxy fumes — enclosed equipment rooms, food and pharma plants, bottling lines, and dairies where a solvented product would taint the environment or trip ventilation requirements. It also earns its place on fresh concrete pours as a curing compound, and as the resin component of ECC (epoxy cement composite) repair mortars used for patching. It is not marketed as a heavy-duty, high-build industrial flooring system for forklift or steel-wheeled traffic — for that, MC-Bauchemie’s thicker self-levelling and PU ranges are the better fit — but as a mechanically sound, chemical- and oil-resistant sealer for light-to-medium duty floors, tank bunds, and bridge protection, it does its job with less site disruption than solvent-based alternatives.
The technical insight
The chemistry that matters here is the water-based epoxy dispersion. Instead of carrying the epoxy resin in an organic solvent that has to flash off before cure, MC-DUR 111 D disperses it in water, which is what lets it bond to damp (not wet) concrete and act as a curing membrane on green slabs — water in the substrate doesn’t fight the coating for adhesion the way it would with a solvented system. The two-component design uses different mixing ratios for the two grades: 3 parts resin to 1 part hardener by weight for the transparent primer, and roughly 100:30 for the pigmented coats, so site crews need to keep drums and mixing paddles clearly segregated by grade. Pot life is a real constraint — about 90 minutes at +23°C and 50% RH — and it shortens noticeably in Indian summer site conditions, so batching small, working fast, and keeping tins out of direct sun are not optional extras but part of getting a sound film.
Where it is used
- Protective coating on industrial and warehouse concrete floors carrying foot and light vehicular traffic
- Oil- and petrol-resistant flooring in car parks, garages, petrol stations and car-wash bays
- Chemical-resistant coating for chemical, pharmaceutical, food-processing, bottling and dairy plants
- Curing membrane on freshly placed concrete slabs, replacing a separate curing compound
- Protective coating on bridge decks and other exposed concrete structures
- Coating for solvent-sensitive interiors — server/equipment rooms, precision-machinery halls, cleanrooms
- Resin binder for ECC (epoxy cement composite) repair mortars used in patch repairs
- Transparent primer coat under pigmented topcoats in multi-coat epoxy flooring build-ups
Key advantages
- Water-based and virtually solvent-free — low odour, safer to apply in occupied or enclosed buildings
- Bonds to slightly damp concrete, useful on slabs that can’t be fully dried out before coating
- Doubles as a curing compound, saving a separate product and application pass on new pours
- Resists diesel, dilute acids/alkalis and a wide range of organic solvents once fully cured
- Available transparent (primer/curing membrane) or pigmented, giving flexibility within one system
- Tools clean up with plain water while the material is still within pot life
- Reasonably fast turnaround — touch-dry in 5-6 hours, full mechanical/chemical resistance in 7 days
- Backed by MC-Bauchemie India’s manufacturing and technical support, supplied through Space Arc
Limitations & considerations
- Minimum application temperature per the datasheet is demanding for shoulder-season or early-morning work; site teams need to plan around it
- Short pot life (~90 minutes) that shortens further in hot weather, so batch sizes have to be judged carefully on site
- As a water-based epoxy it does not match the abrasion and impact resistance of heavy-duty solvented or self-levelling systems meant for fork-lift or steel-wheeled traffic
- Needs a genuinely sound substrate — minimum 25 N/mm² concrete compressive strength and 1.5 N/mm² pull-off strength — so weak or laitance-covered slabs need repair first
- Transparent and coloured grades use different resin:hardener ratios, so drums must not be mixed up between the two on site
- The published datasheet dates to January 2013 — Space Arc recommends confirming current batch data and VOC/compliance certificates before large tenders
Selection & best practice
Confirm the substrate is structurally sound (minimum 25 N/mm² concrete compressive strength, at least 1.5 N/mm² pull-off strength) and free of laitance, oil, curing compounds and old coatings before starting; grind or shot-blast where in doubt. Always prime first with the transparent grade, then apply pigmented coats within the 24-hour inter-coat window — leave it longer and intercoat adhesion suffers. Mix only what can be used inside the pot life, blend the base thoroughly before adding hardener, then decant into a second clean container and remix to catch any unmixed material clinging to the pail sides. Respect the datasheet’s temperature and humidity limits (avoid application above 85% RH), and don’t thin coloured coats on any surface that will contact potable water. Clean tools with water before the pot life runs out — once the material kicks off, only mechanical removal works.

How we position MC-Bauchemie MC-DUR 111 D
Within MC-Bauchemie’s own range, MC-DUR 111 D sits at the lighter-duty, water-based end of the MC-DUR epoxy and MC-Floor flooring family; where a project needs thicker self-levelling toppings, higher abrasion resistance for fork-lift traffic, or a fully seamless PU wearing course, Space Arc typically steps specifiers up to MC-Bauchemie’s heavier-build MC-DUR and MC-Floor systems rather than stretching 111 D beyond its brief. Against the wider market, the honest comparator is a solvent-based epoxy sealer such as Fosroc’s Nitoflor FC140 — a two-component solvent-based epoxy that seals industrial concrete floors to a hard, easily cleaned finish. A specifier who can ventilate the site properly and just wants a proven, lower-cost sealed floor may still reach for the solvented Fosroc option; MC-DUR 111 D earns its premium specifically where solvent fumes, application onto damp concrete, or dual use as a curing compound are the deciding factors. Space Arc can quote either system, or a full multi-coat MC-Bauchemie flooring build-up, against the same site brief.
Fosroc Nitoflor FC140 — Specifiers who can properly ventilate the site and want a proven, lower-cost sealed industrial floor without needing damp-tolerance or curing-membrane duty may still choose Fosroc’s solvent-based Nitoflor FC140 over MC-DUR 111 D.
