MC-Bauchemie MC-Montan Grout 01
The Component B activator that turns MC-Bauchemie’s two-component backfill mortar into a fast-gelling ring-gap fill within seconds of injection behind a shield TBM.
What is it?
A colourless, alkaline liquid activator (Component B) that triggers near-instant gelation when combined with MC-Bauchemie’s hydraulic-binder Component A backfill grouts (MC-Montan Grout 02/04/08) during TBM annular gap grouting.
Where is it used?
Injected behind the tail shield of EPB/slurry tunnel boring machines to fill the annular gap between the excavated bore and precast segmental lining — on metro rail, road, sewer and utility tunnel drives, especially under sensitive urban ground.
Why use it?
It locks the lining into place almost immediately, closing off the ring gap before groundwater or loose ground can migrate in, which is what keeps surface settlement under control on live urban alignments.
How is it applied?
Metered and injected on-site through the TBM’s dedicated two-component grout lines as Component B, dosed against Component A at ratios and gel-time settings validated for the project’s specific ground and binder chemistry — never mixed or handled as a stand-alone product.
About MC-Bauchemie MC-Montan Grout 01
MC-Montan Grout 01 is not a grout in the sense most Indian contractors use the word. It is a colourless, alkaline liquid activator — Component B of MC-Bauchemie’s two-component (A/B) backfill grout system used behind shield tunnel boring machines. When a TBM advances, it leaves an annular gap between the excavated bore and the precast segmental lining it has just placed. That gap has to be filled almost as fast as it opens, or groundwater and loose ground move in and the surface above starts to settle. MC-Montan Grout 01 is what makes that possible: injected alongside a hydraulic-binder Component A mortar (MC-Montan Grout 02, 04 or 08), it triggers gel-phase formation within seconds, locking the segments in place and closing the ring gap before it can bleed out or migrate into permeable strata.
For Space Arc, this sits at the specialist end of the MC-Bauchemie range we handle. It is not a shelf item any contractor stocks for a Saturday repair job — it is engineered, project-specific chemistry supplied in bulk to tunnelling contractors running EPB or slurry-shield TBMs, most visibly on India’s expanding metro rail programme (Delhi, Mumbai Metro Line 3, Bangalore, Chennai, Pune, Kolkata) as well as urban sewer, utility and micro-tunnelling drives. Our role as an authorised MC-Bauchemie distributor and applicator is less about counter sales and more about sourcing, documentation (TDS, SDS, DoP) and coordinating trial-grouting and dosage validation with MC’s tunnelling specialists before a project locks in its injection plant settings.
The technical insight
The chemistry is worth understanding before you order it. Component A is a cementitious/hydraulic-binder mortar; Component B — MC-Montan Grout 01 — is the alkaline trigger that flips it from a pumpable slurry into a gelled, load-bearing fill within seconds rather than hours. That gel-time window is the entire point: too slow, and the mortar bleeds into the surrounding ground or the annulus stays unsupported long enough for settlement to start; too fast, and it can gel in the line before it reaches the ring gap. Because the reaction depends on the exact hydraulic binder used in the paired Component A, MC-Bauchemie states plainly that the mode of action is dependent on the particular composition of the hydraulic binder in Component A — which is why dosage is never a catalogue number, it is set by trial against the actual site materials. At 1.37 ± 0.05 kg/dm³ density and manufactured under EN ISO 9001 in-company production control, batch-to-batch consistency matters more here than in almost any other product in the MC range, since the injection plant’s dosing pumps are calibrated against it.
Where it is used
- Backfill (annular gap) grouting behind precast segmental lining on EPB and slurry-shield TBM drives
- Component B activator in two-component A/B backfill grout systems paired with MC-Montan Grout 02, 04 or 08
- Metro rail tunnel construction through dense, settlement-sensitive urban corridors
- Urban sewer and water-conveyance tunnelling, including smaller-diameter micro-tunnel and pipe-jacking drives
- Road and highway tunnels advanced by shield TBM
- Utility and cable tunnels bored beneath congested city infrastructure
- Tunnel alignments passing close to heritage structures, live rail corridors or high-rise foundations where settlement tolerance is tight
- Long tunnel drives where consistent, repeatable gel-time control is needed shift after shift
Key advantages
- Initiates gel phase within seconds, closing the ring gap before groundwater or loose ground can migrate into it
- Dosage-adjustable early strength lets the injection team tune gel time to the specific ground and binder chemistry on a given drive
- Engineered as a matched A/B pair with MC-Montan Grout 02/04/08 rather than a generic accelerator bolted onto someone else’s mortar
- Directly supports settlement control on sensitive urban alignments — the reason most metro tunnelling specifications call for a proper two-component system at all
- Liquid, ready-to-dose form feeds straight into standard TBM two-component grout lines with no on-site powder mixing
- Manufactured under EN ISO 9001 in-company production control, so dosing pumps calibrated to one batch stay accurate on the next
- Backed by MC-Bauchemie’s dedicated Business Unit Tunnelling for on-site consultation and dosage optimisation
- Six-month minimum shelf life in unopened packs gives contractors a realistic window to sequence deliveries against a drive programme
Limitations & considerations
- Only works as one half of a system — it cannot be used, or evaluated, without its paired Component A binder mortar
- Gel time is specific to the exact Component A composition, so dosage cannot be taken off a data sheet; it needs project trial grouting before production use
- It is an alkaline liquid, not a general repair or anchoring grout, and needs the PPE and handling precautions any alkaline activator demands
- Requires proper metered two-component injection equipment on the TBM, not hand-mixing or bucket dosing
- Supplied only in bulk (200 kg drums or 1,000 kg IBC) as project-quantity material, so it is not practical for small or one-off jobs
- Frost-sensitive with a finite six-month storage life, which means site logistics have to track consumption rather than treat it as long-term stock
Selection & best practice
Never lock a TBM’s grout plant to a dosage taken straight off this data sheet. Run a project-specific trial pairing MC-Montan Grout 01 with the intended Component A binder, using actual site groundwater and ground chemistry, and check gel time at real injection-line temperature rather than lab-ambient — alkaline activators are temperature sensitive and a trial run in a cool store does not predict behaviour in a warm shield tail. Keep drums and IBCs sealed until use, rotate stock FIFO inside the six-month window, and route any substitution — a different Component A, a different binder batch, even a different supplier’s activator — back through a fresh trial rather than assuming compatibility. The seconds-scale gel window is precisely what keeps the ring gap closed and the surface above it stable; an unverified pairing can silently push that window either way.

Industry use cases
Metro rail tunnelling
Annular backfill behind EPB shield TBMs on underground metro corridors through congested Indian cities, where ring-gap closure timing has a direct bearing on surface settlement over live roads, utilities and buildings.
Urban sewer and water tunnelling
Backfill grouting on micro-tunnelling and pipe-jacking style bores for sewer and water conveyance tunnels, where smaller working diameters demand a tightly controlled, repeatable gel-time system.
Road and highway tunnels
Segmental lining backfill on shield-TBM-driven vehicular tunnels, where consistent annular support is needed across long, continuous drive lengths.
Tunnelling near heritage and high-rise structures
Drives passing beneath or close to heritage buildings, existing rail lines or high-rise foundations, where minimal ground movement is a hard project constraint rather than a preference.
Utility and cable tunnels
Backfill grouting on smaller-bore utility and cable tunnel drives beneath dense city infrastructure, run by the same two-component logic at a smaller scale.

How we position MC-Bauchemie MC-Montan Grout 01
MC-Montan Grout 01 only makes sense alongside its Component A partners — MC-Montan Grout 02, 04 and 08 — which supply the hydraulic binder it activates; treat the pairing as one qualified system rather than mixing and matching against another manufacturer’s mortar without a fresh trial. It sits within MC-Bauchemie’s wider Tunnelling Systems range (which also covers sprayed concrete, waterproofing membranes and ombran sewer rehabilitation for underground structures), so a contractor already running MC products on a metro package has a single technical point of contact across the tunnel lining, backfill and waterproofing scope. On genuine alternatives: this is a narrow, specialist category dominated by tunnelling-focused chemistry houses — think Sika, BASF/MEYCO, Minova or Normet two-component backfill systems — rather than the general construction-chemicals suppliers Indian contractors deal with day to day. Fosroc, despite a strong Indian grout portfolio (Conbextra non-shrink and anchoring grouts), doesn’t field a comparable TBM annular-gap activator, since that range is built for structural and machine-base grouting rather than shield-tunnelling backfill — so it isn’t a genuine substitute here, and we’d say so plainly rather than force a comparison that doesn’t hold up on site.
