MC-Bauchemie Nafucryl is a crystalline cementitious waterproofing compound manufactured by MC-Bauchemie Germany for application as a slurry coating on concrete surfaces to provide permanent, self-sealing waterproofing through crystalline chemistry. The active crystalline technology in Nafucryl — based on proprietary reactive silicate compounds — differentiates it fundamentally from surface-applied coatings and membranes that provide waterproofing only at the surface layer. When Nafucryl slurry is applied to a saturated concrete surface, the reactive compounds migrate into the capillary pore network of the concrete by osmotic pressure and react with calcium hydroxide (portlandite) present in the pore solution of the hardened cement paste to form insoluble calcium silicate hydrate (CSH) crystals. These crystals grow within the concrete pore network from the treated surface inward — tests have demonstrated Nafucryl crystal growth to depths of 50 to 100 mm into concrete from the coated surface — physically blocking the capillary pore pathways that water uses to migrate through concrete under hydrostatic pressure. Because the crystalline reaction is triggered by moisture and the unreacted active compounds remain dormant in the concrete matrix until re-wetted, Nafucryl provides a unique self-sealing capability: when a new hairline crack develops in the treated concrete (due to shrinkage, thermal movement, or minor structural settlement), moisture in contact with the crack walls reactivates the dormant crystalline compounds in the adjacent concrete matrix, which then grow new crystals to seal the new crack. This self-sealing capability means that Nafucryl-treated concrete continues to waterproof itself for the full service life of the structure, without reliance on an intact surface coating layer that can be damaged or delaminate. Nafucryl is used for positive-side and negative-side waterproofing of concrete structures in contact with water — basements, foundations, tunnels, water supply reservoirs, waste water treatment structures, and water tanks — particularly where the permanence and self-healing of crystalline technology provides advantages over membrane waterproofing systems.
