What is it?

A one-component, cement-bound, polymer-modified and fibre-reinforced mortar, formulated without C3A (tricalcium aluminate) so it resists the sulphate and biogenic sulphuric-acid attack typical inside sewer lines.

Where is it used?

Manholes, sewer chambers and channels, STP and ETP tanks, wet wells of sewage pumping stations, and reservoirs — anywhere concrete or masonry sits under sustained wastewater, moisture or sulphate exposure.

Why use it?

Delivers structural, Class R3 (EN 1504-3) repair strength while staying durable down to pH 3.5, resisting the grit-laden abrasion and biogenic acid attack that eat through ordinary OPC-based repair mortars inside sewer infrastructure.

How is it applied?

Applied by hand, fresh-in-fresh, over an ombran HB bonding coat using a steel float or trowel; the factory dry-mix is gauged with 3.2–3.5 litres of water per 25 kg bag and built up in 10–25 mm coats to a 50 mm maximum, or used from 6 mm as a reprofiling mortar.

About MC-Bauchemie ombran MHP 15

Sewer and manhole rehabilitation is one of those repair categories where a “general purpose” concrete repair mortar quietly fails within a couple of monsoons. The environment inside a live sewer line combines standing wastewater, fluctuating pH, hydrogen sulphide gas that bacteria convert into sulphuric acid on exposed surfaces, and abrasive grit moving through the invert — a combination that attacks the C3A (tricalcium aluminate) component in ordinary Portland cement and triggers sulphate expansion and spalling. ombran MHP 15 is MC-Bauchemie’s answer to that specific problem: it’s part of the dedicated ombran range built for underground sewer systems, rather than a structural repair mortar borrowed from the general concrete-repair catalogue and relabelled for wastewater use.

As an authorised MC-Bauchemie distributor and applicator for Delhi NCR and pan-India projects, Space Arc supplies ombran MHP 15 to municipal corporations, urban local bodies, STP/ETP EPC contractors and consulting engineers handling manhole, sewer and wastewater-tank rehabilitation. It’s a fast-setting, one-component mortar — site teams add water to a factory-proportioned bag rather than batching individual constituents on site, which matters when crews are working inside confined, part-time-accessible manhole chambers with limited working windows between wastewater flow interruptions.

The technical insight

The detail that separates ombran MHP 15 from a repurposed structural repair mortar is its C3A-free binder. In a live sewer, hydrogen sulphide gas released from wastewater is oxidised by bacteria on exposed concrete surfaces into sulphuric acid — engineers call this biogenic corrosion, and it’s the single biggest reason manholes and sewer crowns deteriorate faster than almost any other concrete structure. Tricalcium aluminate (C3A), a normal component of ordinary Portland cement, reacts with sulphates to form expansive ettringite, cracking and delaminating a repair from within. By formulating without C3A, ombran MHP 15 is inherently resistant to this attack rather than relying purely on a surface coating to keep sulphates out — which is also why it carries a DIN 19573 WW-mortar classification and an EN 1504-3 Class R3 structural rating, and stays serviceable down to pH 3.5.

Where it is used

  • Structural reprofiling of spalled, eroded or corroded manhole chambers and benching
  • Protective coating of concrete or masonry sewer crown, soffit and invert surfaces
  • Internal rehabilitation of RCC sewage treatment plant (STP) tanks and channels
  • Wet-well repair inside sewage and effluent pumping stations
  • Internal repair of effluent treatment plant (ETP) tanks in industrial units
  • Repointing and jointing of brick or precast concrete manhole rings and covers
  • Forming fillets and haunches at pipe-to-manhole junctions to control flow and prevent standing effluent
  • Repair and coating of reservoirs and wastewater holding structures

Key advantages

  • C3A-free binder chemistry is purpose-built to resist sulphate and biogenic sulphuric-acid attack, not just an OPC mortar carrying an anti-corrosion label
  • Reaches ≥ 43.5 N/mm² compressive strength at 28 days — genuine EN 1504-3 Class R3 structural repair, not a cosmetic patch
  • Water resistant in as little as ~1.5 hours at 20°C, useful where a manhole or chamber has to be returned to flow quickly
  • Fibre reinforcement gives real abrasion resistance against grit and silt carried in sewer flow
  • Single-component, factory-proportioned — only water is added on site, cutting batching inconsistency in confined chamber conditions
  • Carries DIN 19573 WW-mortar classification (coating, jointing and repair grades) plus general building supervision approval — useful where a municipal specification calls for a recognised sewer-mortar standard rather than a generic repair-mortar TDS
  • Can be built up to 50 mm total thickness in layers, so deeper breakouts don’t need a separate patching product before the coating goes on
  • Durable down to pH 3.5 and rated for EN 206 exposure class XA3 — genuinely chemically aggressive conditions, not just periodic dampness

Limitations & considerations

  • Cannot be used standalone — ombran HB bonding agent is mandatory as a primer coat, adding a product, a step and some cost to every job
  • Working time is only about 15 minutes at 20°C, and Indian summer site temperatures will shorten that further, so crews need training and small batch sizes
  • Mixing by hand or in partial batches is explicitly disallowed by MC-Bauchemie — a pug mill or slow-speed double-shaft stirrer is needed on site, which smaller contractors may not always carry
  • Only available in a 25 kg bag, so there’s no small-pack option for a single spot repair
  • It’s a repair and coating mortar, not a waterproofing membrane in its own right — where a continuous water barrier is the actual requirement, it needs to be paired with the correct ombran waterproofing product, not substituted for one
  • Cementitious systems like this have a practical lower pH limit; sewer lines carrying industrial effluent with sustained pH well below 3.5 need a case-specific recommendation from MC-Bauchemie rather than a standard application

Selection & best practice

Never skip the ombran HB bonding coat and never let it dry before applying ombran MHP 15 — the system is designed to be used fresh-in-fresh, and skipping this step is the most common cause of debonding failures reported on site. Mix strictly by machine (pug mill or slow-speed double stirrer, never by hand or in partial batches), keep batch sizes to what one crew can place within the roughly 15-minute working time, and protect the finished surface from rapid water loss for a full 72 hours using jute sacking, a curing compound or polythene sheeting — especially in the hot, dry or windy conditions common on Delhi NCR sites.

Frequently asked questions

Can I apply ombran MHP 15 directly onto bare concrete without a bonding coat?
No. MC-Bauchemie’s system requires ombran HB as the bonding agent, applied first, with ombran MHP 15 placed fresh-in-fresh onto it. Skipping the bonding coat is the most common reason for early debonding in sewer repair work.
Is this the same as a normal concrete repair mortar used above ground?
No — the key difference is the C3A-free binder, formulated specifically to resist the sulphate attack and biogenic sulphuric-acid corrosion found inside sewer lines. A standard structural repair mortar isn’t engineered against that chemistry and tends to fail faster in this environment.
Can it be used on a live or partially flowing sewer line?
It’s built for wastewater-structure environments and reaches water resistance in around 1.5 hours at 20°C, but flow generally needs to be diverted or interrupted during application and initial cure — confirm the sequencing with your site engineer for the specific structure.
How thick a layer can I apply in one go?
As a coating mortar it’s applied in 10–25 mm layers, with a 50 mm maximum total thickness built up through multiple passes; as a reprofiling mortar for filling breakouts it can be used from 6 mm upward. Very deep breakouts need several layers, not one thick pour.
Is it suitable for potable water or drinking-water reservoirs?
ombran MHP 15 is positioned for sewerage systems and wastewater-contact structures. For potable water tanks, ask Space Arc for the correct drinking-water-safe product from the MC-Bauchemie range rather than substituting this one.
What pack size and shelf life should I plan for on a tender BOQ?
It’s supplied only in 25 kg bags, with a 12-month shelf life when stored sealed between 5°C and 25°C in dry conditions — factor bag counts and covered storage into your site logistics accordingly.

How we position MC-Bauchemie ombran MHP 15

ombran MHP 15 sits inside MC-Bauchemie’s dedicated ombran range for underground sewer systems, and it isn’t meant to be used alone: ombran HB is the mandatory bonding-coat partner, and where the scope extends to full waterproofing rather than repair and coating, the ombran W membrane covers that requirement — Space Arc can quote these as a system rather than piecing them together separately. Outside the MC-Bauchemie range, the nearest comparison point is Fosroc’s Renderoc series of EN 1504-3 Class R3 repair mortars, which a specifier might reach for on a general structural repair scope. However, Renderoc products aren’t formulated with a C3A-free binder or a DIN 19573 WW-mortar classification, so they aren’t a like-for-like substitute where the specification genuinely calls out sulphate resistance for sewer or effluent exposure — for that specific requirement, ombran MHP 15 remains the more defensible choice on paper.
