What is it?

A cement-bound, polymer-modified, C3A-free, fibre-reinforced repair and coating mortar purpose-built for sewer, manhole and wastewater-structure rehabilitation.

Where is it used?

Manholes, sewer lines, inspection chambers, STP/ETP tanks, pump-station wet wells and underground reservoirs carrying municipal or industrial effluent.

Why use it?

Resists sulphuric-acid attack from H2S generation down to pH ≥ 3.5, gains strength fast, and carries DIN 19573 wastewater-mortar classification and EN 1504-3 Class R3 rating.

How is it applied?

Machine-mixed (25kg powder to 3.2-3.5 L water), trowel or float-applied fresh-in-fresh over an ombran HB bonding coat, in 10-25mm layers up to 50mm total thickness, then moist-cured for at least 72 hours.

About MC-Bauchemie ombran MHP

On a live sewer line or manhole, the enemy isn’t load — it’s chemistry. Hydrogen sulphide generated by anaerobic effluent converts to sulphuric acid on exposed chamber walls, and ordinary Portland cement mortars simply dissolve under sustained pH 3-4 attack. ombran MHP is MC-Bauchemie’s answer to that specific failure mode: a cement-bound, polymer-modified, C3A-free repair and coating mortar built around the ombran underground sewer system range. Because the binder is C3A-free, it resists the classic sulphate expansion-and-spalling mechanism that destroys standard repair mortars in wastewater exposure, and it carries a documented durability rating down to pH ≥ 3.5 under EN 206 exposure class XA3 — a level most general-purpose repair mortars are never tested against, let alone rated for.

In practice, ombran MHP is used two ways on the same chamber: as a re-profiling mortar to rebuild spalled invert, benching, or wall sections back to line and level, and as a coating mortar applied over the top to seal and protect the substrate going forward. It is fibre-reinforced for abrasion resistance against grit-laden flow, gains strength fast enough (8 N/mm² compressive at 24 hours) to allow a quick return to service on live infrastructure, and is factory-proportioned as a single-component powder so site batching errors are minimised — important on confined-space manhole work where remixing a bad batch mid-shaft is not practical. It is not a general concrete repair mortar wearing a sewer label; the DIN 19573 WW-classifications and EN 1504-3 Class R3 rating on the datasheet are specific to wastewater-structure performance, and that specificity is the entire point of specifying it over a cheaper alternative.

The technical insight

The number that matters most on this datasheet is the pH ≥ 3.5 durability rating under EN 206 exposure class XA3 — that is what separates a sewer-rated mortar from a repurposed structural repair mortar. Sewer-crown corrosion follows a well-documented biogenic cycle: anaerobic bacteria in the effluent generate hydrogen sulphide gas, which oxidises on the exposed, moist chamber surface into sulphuric acid, often reaching pH levels below 2 at the point of attack even when the bulk effluent itself is closer to neutral. Ordinary Portland cement mortars contain C3A (tricalcium aluminate), which reacts with sulphate ions to form expansive ettringite, cracking and spalling the mortar from within. ombran MHP’s C3A-free binder chemistry removes that reaction pathway at the source rather than trying to outlast it with a thicker section. Layered on top of that base chemistry, the fibre reinforcement addresses a separate, mechanical failure mode — abrasion from grit and solids in flowing effluent — which is why the product carries both a chemical exposure rating and a structural classification (EN 1504-3 Class R3) rather than one or the other. For specifiers, the DIN 19573 WW-classification suffix is worth reading carefully: it tells you exactly which duty (coating, jointing, or repair) and which exposure class the mortar is certified for in that specific role, so the same bag can be specified correctly for a full coating system or purely as a re-profiling fill depending on project need.

Where it is used

  • Coating of concrete and brick masonry manholes, inspection chambers and sewer lines carrying municipal or industrial effluent
  • Re-profiling of spalled, eroded or honeycombed sewer inverts, benching and chamber walls before final coating
  • Repair and internal lining of RCC sewage treatment plant (STP) tanks, wet wells and pump-station chambers
  • Structural build-up of degraded manhole walls ahead of a protective topcoat in two-stage rehabilitation work
  • Jointing and sealing of brick/masonry manhole rings and precast concrete panel joints in wastewater structures
  • Forming fillets and channel profiles at manhole bases to restore correct hydraulic flow after erosion damage
  • Rehabilitation of CETP/ETP (common and captive effluent treatment plant) tanks and sumps handling low-pH industrial discharge
  • Coating of lift stations, industrial effluent sumps and underground reservoirs exposed to sustained moisture and chemical attack

Key advantages

  • C3A-free, sulphate-resisting cement chemistry rated durable down to pH ≥ 3.5 — purpose-built for H2S/sulphuric-acid attack in sewer atmospheres, not just generic ‘chemical resistant’ marketing
  • Fibre reinforcement delivers high abrasion resistance against grit and solids-laden effluent flow at inverts and benching
  • Fast early strength gain (≥8 N/mm² compressive at 24 hours) lets municipal contractors reopen a chamber to service quickly
  • One-component, factory-proportioned powder reduces batching variability versus site-mixed multi-component systems, useful in confined manhole conditions
  • Cures water-impermeable, which protects the substrate and any reinforcement behind it from further chloride and sulphate ingress
  • Freeze-thaw and de-icing salt resistant, relevant for exposed inlet chambers and northern-belt project sites
  • Carries recognised third-party performance benchmarks — DIN 19573 WW-coating/jointing/repair classification and EN 1504-3 Class R3 — giving consultants an auditable basis for specification instead of a manufacturer claim alone
  • Simple trowel/steel-float application for smaller chambers means no dedicated spray rig is needed on typical manhole jobs

Limitations & considerations

  • Must be applied fresh-in-fresh over the ombran HB bonding coat as a system — it is not designed to be used as a stand-alone patch on unprimed substrate
  • Working time is short (approximately 15 minutes at 20°C) and will run shorter still in Indian summer site temperatures, so batch sizes and crew pace need planning
  • Maximum grain size of ~2mm and a 50mm total system thickness cap mean deep sections require multiple layers rather than one thick pour
  • Mechanical mixing (pug mill or slow-speed double stirrer, minimum 3 minutes) is mandated on the datasheet — hand-mixing is explicitly disallowed, which rules out ad-hoc small-crew application
  • Designed for enclosed underground wastewater exposure, not as a UV-exposed architectural or above-ground decorative finish
  • As an imported specialist system product, cost per bag and lead time typically run higher than a generic local repair mortar not carrying wastewater-specific certification

Selection & best practice

Never skip the bonding coat. The datasheet is explicit that ombran MHP must go on “fresh-in-fresh” over ombran HB as the primer/bonding agent — applying it onto bare, dry substrate is the single most common cause of debonding call-backs on sewer rehabilitation sites. Pre-wet and prepare the substrate exactly per MC-Bauchemie’s general manhole/sewer repair-mortar application note before starting. Mix mechanically only — a pug mill or slow-speed double stirrer, minimum three minutes, powder scattered into water rather than the reverse; hand-mixing and part-bag mixing are disallowed on the TDS and will show up as inconsistent strength. Respect the working time: roughly 15 minutes at 20°C, shorter in Delhi-NCR summer site temperatures, so batch small and keep pace with placement. Where more than 25mm is needed in a single coating pass, build it up in multiple fresh-in-fresh layers rather than one thick pour — the maximum total system thickness is 50mm. Protect the finished surface from rapid water loss for at least 72 hours using a compatible curing method (MC-RIM PROTECT C, jute sacking or sheeting); in enclosed, poorly ventilated shafts, physically maintaining that moisture is often harder than the mixing itself, so plan curing logistics before starting the pour, not after.

Frequently asked questions

What actually makes ombran MHP different from a standard cementitious repair mortar used on manholes?
The binder is C3A-free and tested durable down to pH ≥ 3.5 under EN 206 exposure class XA3, plus it carries DIN 19573 WW-coating/jointing/repair classifications specific to wastewater structures. A general-purpose repair mortar is not tested or rated against sulphuric-acid attack from H2S generation, which is the actual failure mode inside a live sewer — that’s the gap this product closes.
Can we apply ombran MHP directly without the bonding coat to save a step?
No. MC-Bauchemie’s own application advice requires ombran MHP to be applied fresh-in-fresh onto ombran HB as the bonding agent. Skipping it is the most common cause of delamination on sewer coating jobs — it is not an optional upgrade, it is part of the specified system.
How thick can we build up in one go, and how many layers are we likely to need?
As a coating mortar each layer runs 10-25mm, with a 50mm maximum total system thickness, so deeper defects need to be built up in multiple fresh-in-fresh passes rather than one thick application. As a re-profiling mortar alone, minimum thickness is 6mm.
Is this suitable for chambers handling industrial or low-pH effluent, not just domestic sewage?
Yes, that is within its designed exposure range — durability is rated to pH ≥ 3.5, which covers most CETP/ETP and industrial effluent conditions. For more aggressive or specialised chemical exposure outside that range, MC-Bauchemie’s Konudur epoxy-resin systems are the appropriate step-up, and that decision should be based on the actual effluent chemistry at site, not assumed.
What’s the pack size, shelf life and storage requirement?
It’s supplied as a 25kg bag, mixed at roughly 3.2-3.5 litres of water per bag. Stored sealed in original packaging between 5°C and 25°C in dry conditions, shelf life is at least 12 months — standard warehouse discipline in humid Indian storage conditions is what actually determines whether you get the full 12 months.
Does Space Arc supply this with application support in Delhi NCR, or just the material?
Space Arc supplies ombran MHP as an authorised MC-Bauchemie distributor and can coordinate applicator support for manhole and sewer rehabilitation packages across Delhi NCR and pan-India project sites — confined-space sewer work is not a DIY pour, so we’d rather scope the applicator alongside the material than just ship a pallet.

How we position MC-Bauchemie ombran MHP

ombran MHP does not work alone — it is one part of MC-Bauchemie’s ombran underground sewer system, and specifiers should treat it as such. It is always paired with ombran HB as the mandatory bonding coat beneath it; for chambers needing an automated, higher-output application, MC-Bauchemie’s ombran MHP-SP 3000 is the CEM III-based premium grade built for robotic MRT (Manhole Rehabilitation Technology) spray application and the toughest B2/XWW4 classification; and where effluent chemistry is too aggressive even for a cementitious system, the Konudur epoxy-resin range (including Konudur Robopox for robot-aided non-accessible sewer repair) is the appropriate step-up. Within the same ombran MHP family, a finer-grained “ombran MHP Fine” variant also exists for applications needing smoother processing. Space Arc can source and coordinate the correct combination for a given project rather than supplying MHP as an isolated SKU. On alternatives: specifiers comparing options will typically place ombran MHP against Fosroc’s Renderoc structural repair range (e.g. Renderoc HB, Renderoc GP) for general concrete rehabilitation scope, but honesty matters here — Fosroc does not currently publish a mortar carrying the same DIN 19573 WW-wastewater classification or the documented pH ≥ 3.5 sulphate-durability rating that ombran MHP is specifically engineered and certified against. For a chamber where the primary threat is H2S/sulphuric-acid attack rather than general mechanical damage, that certification gap is the deciding factor, which is why no Fosroc product is listed here as a like-for-like equivalent.
