What is it?

A prefabricated carbon-fibre reinforced polymer (CFRP) panel that sits over a floor joint. Its sinusoidal tooth profile spans the gap so wheels roll across smoothly instead of dropping into an open joint.

Where is it used?

Warehouses, assembly halls, workshops, showrooms, hospitals, schools and pharmaceutical or production floors with normal to medium wear and joints that move only 1–5 mm.

Why use it?

It protects the joint arrises from forklift and pallet-truck impact, kills the hammering vibration that shatters ordinary joint edges, and can be ground flush into a resin floor for a near-seamless finish.

How is it applied?

The old joint arris is cut back and cleaned, the panel is bedded in Sika epoxy adhesive over the joint, levelled, then ground flush and integrated into the surrounding floor coating.

About Sika FloorJoint XS

Sika FloorJoint XS is the compact member of the Sika FloorJoint family, engineered for control and isolation joints that see real traffic but only minor movement. The panel is a carbon-fibre reinforced polymer composite measuring 1200 x 80 x 15 mm and weighing about 2.8 kg per piece. Rather than sealing a joint with a soft filler, it bridges the joint mechanically: an interlocking sinusoidal tooth profile lets a forklift or car wheel transfer smoothly from one side of the slab to the other, so the load is never carried by a fragile concrete edge. It forms the core of the Sika FloorJoint PB-30 XS System and is intended for gap widths from 0 to 5 mm.

For contractors and consultants working on Indian warehouse and industrial floors, the appeal is practical. Joint edges are where most industrial floors fail first — repeated wheel impact chips the concrete arris, the chip grows, the joint filler tears out, and soon you have a maintenance headache under every rack aisle. FloorJoint XS moves that wear onto a purpose-built composite that will not corrode, resists chemicals, and can be reground and repaired locally without demolishing the slab. Because its thermal expansion behaviour is close to that of resin flooring, it integrates cleanly into epoxy and PU screed systems rather than fighting them.

The technical insight

The whole design turns on how load crosses the joint. A conventional filled joint asks the two exposed concrete arrises to take the wheel impact directly; under a loaded forklift those edges see sharp, repeated point loads and eventually spall. FloorJoint XS replaces that with a pair of meshing sinusoidal teeth moulded into a stiff CFRP panel. As a wheel approaches the gap, several teeth are always in contact and sharing the load, so the vertical step the wheel would otherwise feel is spread out and the impact is damped instead of hammered. The carbon-fibre composite gives the stiffness to transfer that load (compressive strength around 60 N/mm2, tensile strength around 50 N/mm2 after 14 days at 23 C / 50% r.h.) while staying thin enough at 15 mm to grind flush. The panel also accommodates a defined amount of joint movement — up to +3.0 mm opening and around -1 to -2 mm closing depending on the installed gap — so the floor can still breathe with temperature without overstressing the teeth. Fire performance is classified Bfl-s1 to DIN EN 13501-1.

Where it is used

  • Control and isolation joints in warehouse and distribution-centre floors with forklift and pallet-truck traffic
  • Assembly halls and maintenance workshops where smooth wheel transfer across joints matters
  • Resin (epoxy/PU) floor systems where the joint must be ground flush and integrated into the coating
  • Hospitals, laboratories and pharmaceutical clean areas needing hygienic, low-vibration joints
  • Showrooms, retail floors and public buildings where appearance and a near-seamless finish count
  • Refurbishment of existing concrete joints where the failing arris is cut back and rebuilt
  • Schools, institutional and light production floors with normal to medium wear
  • Floors requiring a non-corroding, chemically resistant joint in place of steel angle protection

Key advantages

  • Sinusoidal tooth profile smooths wheel transfer and sharply reduces the vibration that destroys ordinary joint edges
  • Carbon-fibre composite is non-corroding and chemically resistant, unlike steel armoured joints
  • Slim 15 mm profile is grindable and integrates flush into resin floor finishes
  • Thermal expansion close to resin flooring, so it works with the coating rather than lifting or debonding
  • Protects the concrete arris from spalling under forklift and vehicle impact
  • Trafficable within about 24 hours of installation, minimising downtime
  • Prefabricated to consistent 1200 mm panels, giving predictable quality versus site-formed joints
  • Locally repairable and re-grindable without breaking out the surrounding slab

Limitations & considerations

  • Built for normal to medium wear only — not a heavy-duty or extreme-load joint solution
  • Suits small movements, roughly 1–5 mm gap widths; not for large expansion joints or seismic movement
  • Positive movement must stay within the rated capacity, or the teeth become unsupported and can be damaged
  • Needs correct epoxy adhesive bedding and a properly prepared, cut-back joint arris to perform
  • Panels must be stored horizontally between +5 C and +30 C in dry conditions to avoid bending
  • Grinding and integration into the floor finish require a skilled applicator, not a general labour crew

Selection & best practice

Start by cutting back the existing or freshly cast joint arris to sound concrete and cleaning out all dust, laitance and debris so the adhesive bonds properly. Bed the panel over the joint in Sika’s specified epoxy adhesive, aligning the teeth to the joint centreline and levelling it with the surrounding slab. Respect the installed gap width — set it to match the movement you expect, because the positive-movement capacity (up to +3.0 mm) depends on it, and never let the joint open beyond the rated figure or the teeth lose support. Allow the adhesive to cure, then grind the panel flush and carry the floor coating up to and over it for a continuous finish. Keep panels stored flat and dry (+5 C to +30 C) before use, and treat installation as a specialist task with trained applicators.

Refurbishment

Rebuilds failed or spalling concrete joints on existing floors — cut back the old arris, bond in the panel, grind flush, and reopen to traffic within a day.

Frequently asked questions

What is Sika FloorJoint XS actually used for?
It is a prefabricated carbon-fibre panel installed over a floor joint so that traffic rolls smoothly across the gap. Its meshing tooth profile transfers wheel loads across the joint and protects the concrete edges from spalling. It suits control and isolation joints with small movement in warehouses, workshops, healthcare and retail floors.
How much movement can it accommodate?
It is designed for minor movement, roughly 1–5 mm gap widths. Depending on the installed gap it allows up to about +3.0 mm opening and -1 to -2 mm closing. Do not let the joint open beyond the rated positive movement, or the teeth become unsupported and can be damaged. For large expansion or seismic movement you need a different joint system.
Can it be integrated into an epoxy or PU resin floor?
Yes — that is a key strength. At 15 mm high it is grindable and its thermal expansion is close to resin flooring, so after bedding it in epoxy adhesive you grind it flush and carry the coating over it for a near-seamless finish. It is the core of the Sika FloorJoint PB-30 XS System.
How is it installed and how soon can we use the floor?
The joint arris is cut back and cleaned, the panel is bonded over the joint in Sika epoxy adhesive, levelled, then ground flush and integrated into the finish. It is typically trafficable within about 24 hours of installation, which keeps floor downtime short.
How is it supplied and packed?
It comes as prefabricated panels of 1200 x 80 x 15 mm, each weighing about 2.8 kg, packed 270 pieces per EU-pallet. Panels must be stored flat and dry between +5 °C and +30 °C to avoid bending before installation.
Is it strong enough for heavy industrial floors?
It is rated for normal to medium wear, with compressive strength around 60 N/mm² and tensile strength around 50 N/mm². For genuinely heavy-duty or extreme-load environments you should step up to a larger panel in the Sika FloorJoint range — talk to us about the right variant for your traffic and load.

How we position Sika FloorJoint XS

Sika FloorJoint XS is the small-format panel in the Sika FloorJoint line; where traffic and loads are heavier, step up to Sika FloorJoint S or a larger PB-30 system variant, and pair it with Sika epoxy bedding adhesive and a Sikafloor resin system for the surrounding floor. It is a rigid, load-transferring joint — a different job from a flexible sealed movement joint. Where the correct answer is a sealed, elastic joint rather than a trafficked panel, we also supply joint sealants across brands, including Sika Sikaflex polyurethane sealants and, from the Fosroc range, Nitoseal PU. For failing concrete arrises around a joint we can add a repair mortar such as Fosroc Nitomortar FC. If your project has extreme loads, very wide joints or large movement, tell us the traffic and gap details and we will specify the right system rather than force-fit the XS panel.

Preferred brand · Fosroc equivalent

Fosroc Nitoseal PU — Choose the Fosroc Nitoseal PU sealant instead when the joint needs a flexible, sealed movement joint rather than a rigid trafficked panel — for example a watertight moving joint that does not have to carry direct forklift loads.
