What is it?

A third-generation, chloride-free polycarboxylate ether (PCE) high-range water-reducing admixture supplied by Sika as a range of grades for concrete and mortar.

Where is it used?

Ready-mixed concrete plants, precast yards and site batching for high-strength, self-compacting and fast-strip concrete across infrastructure, marine and building projects.

Why use it?

Cuts mixing water by up to around 40% at practical dosages, lifting strength, density and durability while holding workability longer than older naphthalene-based plasticisers.

How is it applied?

Dosed at 0.2 to 2.0% by weight of cementitious material, added to the mixing water or into the mixer after 50 to 70% of water, never onto dry cement.

About Sika ViscoCrete

Sika ViscoCrete is Sika’s family of third-generation superplasticisers built on polycarboxylate ether (PCE) chemistry. Unlike older naphthalene- or melamine-based admixtures that rely mainly on charge repulsion, the ViscoCrete polymers combine electrostatic charge with long grafted side chains that physically hold cement grains apart. That dual action lets a concrete producer pull a large volume of water out of the mix without losing the flow the placing crew needs, which is why the range has become a default choice on Indian jobs demanding M50 and above, self-compacting sections, or precast elements on a tight casting cycle.

The name covers several grades rather than a single product. Site-batched high-strength work, ready-mix that has to survive a long haul in summer, and precast lines chasing early-morning demoulding each call for a slightly different balance of water reduction, slump retention and early-strength gain, and the ViscoCrete line is engineered to cover that spread. As an authorised Sika distributor for Delhi NCR and Pan-India, Space Arc Engineering helps engineers and RMC teams match the right grade, such as ViscoCrete-50 PCE for powerful water reduction and early strength or the ViscoCrete ACE series for precast cycle-time savings, to the mix design and trial-establish the dosage before it goes into production.

The technical insight

The whole benefit of ViscoCrete comes down to how the polymer sits on a cement grain. Each molecule has a backbone that anchors onto the freshly wetted cement surface and long polyethylene-oxide side chains that stick out into the water. The anchored backbone gives the grain a like-for-like surface charge so particles push each other away, and the projecting side chains add a physical spacer effect known as steric hindrance. Together they break up the flocs that otherwise trap mixing water inside cement clumps. That trapped water is released back into the mix, so the same slump is reached at a much lower water-to-cement ratio, and a lower ratio is what actually delivers higher strength, a tighter pore structure and lower permeability. Because the dispersion is driven by adsorption rather than a one-off charge dump, the range can be tuned for how quickly the side chains release, which is how some grades hold workability for over an hour in heat while precast-focused grades release faster to speed early strength. The polymers carry no chloride and nothing that promotes reinforcement corrosion, so the durability gain from the lower water content is not offset elsewhere.

Where it is used

  • High-strength structural concrete from M50 to M80 for columns, cores and transfer elements
  • Self-compacting concrete (SCC) for heavily reinforced or architecturally complex sections placed without vibration
  • Precast and prestressed elements needing fast, economical form-stripping and demoulding cycles
  • Ready-mixed concrete requiring extended slump retention through long transit and pumped placement in hot weather
  • Fast-track and in-situ concrete where early strength governs the construction programme
  • Durable concrete for marine, coastal and aggressive-exposure infrastructure where low permeability is specified
  • Blended-cement and SCM mixes using fly ash or GGBS at higher replacement levels
  • Low water-binder mortars and grouts where flowability must be achieved without added water

Key advantages

  • Very high water reduction, up to around 40% at high-range dosage, translating directly into higher strength and density
  • Improved slump and flow retention that keeps concrete placeable through summer transit and long pump runs
  • Enables genuine self-compacting mixes, removing vibration and its labour and noise on site
  • Faster early strength for quicker precast demoulding and reduced or eliminated steam curing
  • Chloride-free and non-corrosive, safe for reinforced and prestressed concrete
  • Effective at lower dosages than naphthalene-based plasticisers, improving mix economy
  • Compatible with all common cements and with fly ash and GGBS blends
  • Conforms to IS 9103, ASTM C494 and EN 934-2, easing specification and approval

Limitations & considerations

  • Performance is grade- and mix-specific, so site trials are essential to fix the correct dosage before production
  • Overdosing or adding extra water can trigger bleeding or segregation, particularly in flowable and SCC mixes
  • PCE admixtures are sensitive to cement and SCM chemistry, and combining products without trials can cause slump loss or incompatibility
  • Different grades suit different goals, so the wrong grade choice can under-deliver on either retention or early strength
  • Should never be added to dry cement or aggregate, and needs adequate wet mixing time to disperse fully
  • Must be protected from frost and direct sunlight and used within roughly 12 months of production

Selection & best practice

Always establish the dosage by trial mix rather than assuming a figure, starting within the recommended band and confirming both fresh behaviour and early strength against the actual cement and SCMs being used. Add ViscoCrete to the mixing water, or into the mixer after 50 to 70% of the water has gone in, and never dose it onto dry cement or aggregate. Allow a minimum wet mixing time of about 60 seconds so the polymer disperses fully. Keep the water-binder ratio disciplined, since the strength and durability gains come from the water you take out, not the flow you see. Stir drums well before use, store between +10°C and +40°C away from sunlight and frost, and if material has frozen, thaw slowly and remix before dosing. For SCC and high-flow work, hold the mix design and dosage tight to avoid bleeding or segregation.

Industry use cases

Ready-Mixed Concrete

Holds slump through long summer transit and pumped placement, letting RMC plants deliver flowable, low-water concrete to distant sites without retempering.

Precast & Prestressed

Fast early-strength grades cut demoulding times and reduce or remove steam curing, raising bed turnover and lowering energy cost per element.

High-Rise & Infrastructure

Delivers M50 to M80 concrete for columns, cores and transfer structures where high strength and low permeability are specified together.

Marine & Coastal Works

The low water-binder ratio produces dense, low-permeability concrete that resists chloride ingress in jetties, sea walls and coastal structures.

Architectural & SCC

Enables self-compacting mixes that flow around dense reinforcement and complex formwork to give a clean, blemish-free finish without vibration.

Frequently asked questions

What is Sika ViscoCrete and how does it differ from an ordinary plasticiser?
It is a third-generation polycarboxylate ether (PCE) superplasticiser. Ordinary naphthalene-based plasticisers disperse cement mainly by charge repulsion, while ViscoCrete adds long side chains that physically separate grains, giving far higher water reduction and better slump retention at lower dosage.
How much water reduction can I expect?
At high-range dosages the ViscoCrete range can reduce mixing water by up to around 40%, though the practical figure depends on the grade, the target slump and your cement and SCM combination. Trial mixes confirm the achievable reduction for your specific design.
What is the recommended dosage?
Grades are typically dosed between 0.2% and 2.0% by weight of cementitious material, with higher dosages used for SCC and very low water-binder mixes. The optimum must always be established by site trial rather than assumed, and drums should be stirred well before use.
Which standards does it conform to?
ViscoCrete grades conform to IS 9103 and ASTM C494, and typically to EN 934-2, with individual grades carrying Type A/F classifications under ASTM C494. Ask Space Arc for the grade-specific data sheet to confirm the exact classification for your specification.
Is it safe for reinforced and prestressed concrete?
Yes. ViscoCrete is chloride-free and contains no ingredients that promote corrosion of steel reinforcement, so it is suitable for reinforced, prestressed and precast concrete where durability is critical.
Which ViscoCrete grade should I use?
It depends on your priority. Grades such as ViscoCrete-50 PCE suit powerful water reduction and early strength, while the ViscoCrete ACE series is tuned for precast cycle-time savings. Share your mix design and Space Arc will recommend the right grade and support the trial.

How we position Sika ViscoCrete

Sika ViscoCrete sits at the top of the water-reducer ladder, above lignosulphonate-based normal plasticisers, and is chosen when a mix genuinely needs high-range PCE performance for strength, SCC or precast cycle time. Within the Sika family it pairs naturally with Sika retarders and Sika Stabilizer for engineered SCC and Rheodynamic mixes, and with Sika curing compounds and SikaFume for durability-driven high-performance concrete. Where a project is already specified around Fosroc, the closest equivalent from our Fosroc range is the Auramix line of PCE superplasticisers. Space Arc supplies both families and will recommend the grade that fits the mix design, exposure class and site logistics rather than pushing a single label.
