Sika SikaPlast-355 X
A high-efficiency PCE superplasticiser that pulls water out of the mix while holding workability, for denser, stronger, lower-permeability ready-mix concrete.
What is it?
A modified polycarboxylate ether (PCE) high-range water-reducing superplasticiser for concrete, supplied as a light brown liquid.
Where is it used?
Ready-mix batching plants and site pours where high water reduction, good flow and consistent workability are needed across varied raw materials.
Why use it?
It cuts mix water sharply at low dosage, raising density and compressive strength while lowering permeability, all without stiffening the concrete prematurely.
How is it applied?
Dosed at 0.2 to 2.0 percent by weight of cement, added to the mixing water or into the mixer after 50 to 70 percent of the water is in, followed by at least 60 seconds of wet mixing.
About Sika SikaPlast-355 X
SikaPlast-355 X is Sika’s high-efficiency superplasticiser built on modified polycarboxylate ether chemistry, aimed squarely at ready-mix producers who need to reduce water aggressively without losing the workability their pumps and placing crews depend on. It behaves as a high-range water reducer under IS 9103 and ASTM C494, which means a designer can lean on it either to hold strength while dropping the water-cement ratio, or to gain flow at a fixed w/c. For a batching plant juggling different cement sources and aggregate gradings through the day, its relative insensitivity to those variations is the quiet advantage that keeps mixes predictable.
In practice the product earns its place because it does a lot at a small dose. The recommended range is 0.2 to 2.0 percent by weight of cement, and even at the lower end the plasticising effect is strong enough to move the slump and improve compaction. That translates into denser, less permeable concrete that resists water ingress and gains strength well, which matters as much to a durability consultant as it does to a contractor chasing a placing rate. It is a liquid admixture, not a curing or waterproofing product, so it works alongside the rest of the concrete system rather than replacing any part of it.
The technical insight
The mechanism is dispersion, not chemical reaction with the cement. Polycarboxylate ether molecules carry a charged backbone that anchors onto cement grains and long side chains that stick out into the surrounding water. Once adsorbed, the grains repel each other by steric hindrance, the physical bulk of those side chains keeping particles apart, rather than the weaker electrostatic repulsion that older naphthalene and lignosulphonate admixtures relied on. Cement flocs that would normally trap mixing water are broken up, and that freed water becomes available for flow. Because the same slump can now be reached with far less water, the concrete can be batched at a much lower water-cement ratio, and it is that reduced w/c, not the admixture itself, that delivers the high density, high strength and reduced permeability. The steric mechanism is also why workability holds for a useful window and why the product tolerates swings in cement type and aggregate without collapsing, an advantage the older chemistries could not match.
Where it is used
- Ready-mixed concrete production at commercial batching plants
- High-strength and high-performance concrete requiring a low water-cement ratio
- Pumped concrete for high-rise and commercial construction where flow retention matters
- Infrastructure pours such as bridges, viaducts and foundations
- Water-resistant and low-permeability structures relying on a dense matrix
- Precast and prestressed elements needing consistent workability and early strength gain
- Industrial floor slabs and rafts where compaction and finish quality are critical
- Mixes using variable raw materials where a robust, forgiving admixture is preferred
Key advantages
- Strong water reduction that raises density and compressive strength and lowers permeability
- High efficiency even at low dosage, helping control admixture cost per cubic metre
- Relatively insensitive to variations in aggregate grading and cement type
- Extended workability that supports transport and placing without early stiffening
- Superior plasticising effect for better flow, placing and compaction
- Compatible with all types of cement and cementitious materials including blended cements
- Meets IS 9103 and ASTM C494 for high-range water-reducing superplasticisers
- Multipurpose across a wide range of mixes, simplifying admixture inventory at a plant
Limitations & considerations
- Overdosing can extend both initial and final setting times, so dosage must be controlled
- Optimum dosage cannot be assumed and must be finalised through site trials with actual materials
- Adding it to dry aggregate or cement is not recommended; it must go into the water or wet mix
- If frozen or if precipitation occurs it needs slow thawing at room temperature and intensive mixing before use
- It is a water reducer only, not a retarder, air-entrainer or waterproofing admixture, and does not replace those
- Shelf life is 12 months in sealed original packaging, and storage outside +10C to +40C degrades performance
Selection & best practice
Always stir the drum well before drawing product, since a PCE liquid can stratify on standing. Dose by weight of cement within the 0.2 to 2.0 percent range and pin down the exact figure with trial mixes using the site’s own cement and aggregates, because the same dose behaves differently across raw materials. Add SikaPlast-355 X into the mixing water, or directly into the mixer once 50 to 70 percent of the water is already in; never batch it onto dry cement or aggregate. Give the mix a minimum of 60 seconds of wet mixing so the admixture disperses fully and the slump develops truly, then judge workability, as under-mixing can read as false stiffness. If you are combining it with other Sika admixtures, run a compatibility trial on that specific combination first. Keep stock sealed, shaded and between +10C and +40C, and use within 12 months of production.

Industry use cases
Ready-Mix Producers
A single multipurpose admixture that holds mixes consistent across changing cement and aggregate sources through the day, reducing the need to stock several products.
High-Rise and Commercial
Delivers pumpable, well-retained workability for tall pours while keeping the water-cement ratio low enough for the strengths these structures demand.
Infrastructure and Precast
Supports dense, low-permeability concrete for bridges, viaducts and precast units, with extended workability aiding placement and early strength development.
Durability-Critical Structures
For water-retaining and exposure-rated elements, the sharp water reduction gives a tighter, less permeable matrix that resists ingress over the service life.

How we position Sika SikaPlast-355 X
SikaPlast-355 X sits in the workhorse tier of Sika’s superplasticiser range, chosen for its cost-to-performance balance across everyday ready-mix. Where a project needs longer slump retention or ultra-high strength, look higher up the SikaPlast X family; for standard water reduction it is often the practical pick. As a Sika distributor and applicator, Space Arc can also pair it with the wider concrete system, curing compounds, waterproofing admixtures and repair mortars from Sika and from the other brands we carry such as Fosroc, Dr. Fixit and MC-Bauchemie, so the admixture, protection and repair layers work together rather than in isolation.
Fosroc Auramix 400 — Specifiers standardised on the Fosroc concrete system, or needing a PCE tuned for self-compacting and long-retention pumped concrete, may prefer Auramix 400 as the equivalent high-range water reducer.
