Asian Paints SmartCare SmartCare Epoxy TriBlock
A three-component epoxy tank coating built for one job — sealing potable water storage without leaching anything into the water your family actually drinks.
What is it?
A three-component (base + hardener + cement filler) epoxy-cementitious coating from Asian Paints’ SmartCare waterproofing range, purpose-built for positive-side lining of cementitious water-retaining structures.
Where is it used?
Domestic and overhead cement water tanks, sumps, and swimming pools — anywhere a cementitious surface needs to hold water without the lining tainting the water’s taste, odour or safety.
Why use it?
It carries CFTRI (Central Food Technological Research Institute, Mysore — a government lab) certification for potable water contact, plus documented resistance to 4 bar of positive hydrostatic pressure, so it works as both a waterproofing membrane and a food-safe tank lining in one coat.
How is it applied?
Mixed on site in a fixed 17:18:65 (base:hardener:filler) ratio by weight, let down with roughly 20% water, and brushed on in two coats applied perpendicular to each other over a clean, saturated-surface-dry substrate.
About Asian Paints SmartCare SmartCare Epoxy TriBlock
Overhead and underground cement water tanks are everywhere in Delhi NCR construction — practically every independent house, builder floor and housing society runs one — and the coating on the inside of that tank is one of the few building materials that ends up in direct, continuous contact with drinking water. Ordinary tank paints and cheap waterproofing coats were never tested for that role; some chip, some let the tank “sweat” a musty smell into stored water, and a few outright fail once the tank is full and under pressure. Asian Paints built SmartCare Epoxy TriBlock specifically to close that gap: it sits inside the SmartCare waterproofing range as the product for cementitious water-retaining structures — tanks and pools — rather than as a general-purpose membrane for roofs or basements, and its CFTRI food-grade sign-off is what separates it from a coating that merely keeps water out.
What you’re buying is a three-component kit, not a ready-mixed paint: a base, a hardener and a cement filler that ship in a fixed 17:18:65 weight ratio and get let down with roughly 20% water on site into a brushable epoxy-cementitious paste. That job-site mixing step is the trade-off for the performance — done right, it gives a food-safe, positive-side barrier that Asian Paints backs with a 2-year warranty specific to water-retaining structures and rates for up to 4 bar of hydrostatic pressure; done carelessly (part-mixed kits, rushed pot life, skipped surface prep) it under-cures and the certification stops meaning much. That’s really the whole story of this product — the chemistry is solid, but it rewards a disciplined applicator far more than a shake-and-brush tank paint would.
The technical insight
TriBlock’s chemistry is a hybrid rather than a pure epoxy. The base-hardener pair supplies the epoxy resin backbone that gives it low permeability, chemical inertness and genuine mechanical adhesion (3 MPa per ASTM D4541) to both smooth and cementitious substrates, while the cement filler — at 65% of the mix by weight, easily the largest component — bulks the film, helps it bridge fine pores and hairline surface imperfections in the substrate, and keeps the compound in a workable, trowel-like consistency before the water cut-down brings it to brushable paste. That heavy filler load is also why the ratio discipline matters so much: unlike a simple two-part epoxy where a little extra hardener is forgiving, this is a three-way balance where a skewed ratio affects cure, film integrity and the basis on which the food-grade certification was granted. “Positive side” waterproofing means the coating goes on the face that meets the water pressure — the inside of the tank wall — which is why the DIN 1048 result (no penetration up to 4 bar) is the number that actually matters for a tank sitting several storeys up on a terrace.
Where it is used
- Overhead RCC water tanks in independent houses, builder floors and apartment blocks
- Underground and ground-level sumps and storage tanks
- Swimming pool linings
- Renovation of ageing cement tanks that have started leaching taste, odour or discolouration into stored water
- Society/RWA overhead and underground community water tanks
- Terrace and rooftop domestic tank retrofits during AMC or plumbing overhauls
- Institutional water storage — hotels, schools, hospitals — needing certified potable-grade lining
- New-build tanks that need a food-safe internal coat before first fill
Key advantages
- CFTRI Mysore (a government food-testing lab) certifies it safe for potable water contact — not a generic ‘food safe’ marketing claim
- Positive-side waterproofing tested to withstand up to 4 bar of hydrostatic pressure per DIN 1048, with no recorded water penetration
- Genuine adhesion — 3 MPa as per ASTM D4541 — on both smooth and cementitious tank substrates
- Microbial-resistant film that resists the algae/slime film common on older tank linings
- Formulated with no added lead, mercury, arsenic or chromium
- Brush application only — no spray rig or specialised plant equipment needed on site
- 2-year warranty specific to cementitious water-retaining structures
- A workable 60-minute pot life at 30°C gives applicators a real window to mix and lay each batch
Limitations & considerations
- Three-component job-site mixing (base + hardener + filler + water, in an exact ratio) — get the ratio wrong and both cure and food safety are compromised
- Short pot life (60 minutes at 30°C) that shrinks further in Delhi summer heat, so batching has to be disciplined
- Not resistant to high concentrations of acids or alkalis — not the right product for aggressive chemical storage tanks
- Sold and datasheet-labelled as an undercoat, not a UV-stable decorative topcoat, so exposed exterior use needs a separate plan
- Available only in white — no colour or finish choice
- Needs genuine SSD (saturated-surface-dry) surface prep and full paint stripping beforehand; applied over a contaminated or unsound substrate, it fails early
Selection & best practice
Treat the mixing ratio as non-negotiable — Base : Hardener : Filler : Water = 17 : 18 : 65 : 20 by weight (for the standard kit, that’s 850 g : 900 g : 3.25 kg : roughly 750–800 ml), and never part-mix a kit; short-mixing throws off both the cure and the food-grade certification. Stir the base and hardener separately first, combine them under continuous mixing, fold in the cement filler, then let down with water until you get a smooth, homogeneous brushable paste. You have about 60 minutes at 30°C before pot life runs out, so mix only what you’ll use in that window — working time shrinks further on a hot Delhi terrace in summer. Apply the first brush coat over a clean, structurally sound, saturated-surface-dry (SSD) substrate with all old paint stripped off, let it dry 4–5 hours, then run the second coat at right angles to the first. Give the tank its full cure before filling it with drinking water, and don’t reach for this product on tanks that will see acid- or alkali-heavy chemical storage — it isn’t rated for that.

How we position Asian Paints SmartCare SmartCare Epoxy TriBlock
Within Asian Paints’ own SmartCare range, TriBlock occupies a specific niche — potable-water tank and pool linings — so it shouldn’t be confused with SmartCare’s roof and terrace waterproofing systems or with SmartCare Damp Block, which targets rising damp in masonry walls rather than water-retaining structures; a specifier working a full building envelope will typically pair TriBlock on the tank with a different SmartCare product on the roof. Outside the brand, the closest genuine equivalent Space Arc also carries is Fosroc’s Nitocote CM210, a cementitious-acrylic coating with its own potable-water approval for tank linings; it’s a reasonable alternative for teams that prefer a trowel- or spray-applied slurry over a brush-applied three-component epoxy, or that are already standardised on Fosroc across the rest of a waterproofing package.
Fosroc Nitocote CM210 — Specifiers who want a trowel- or spray-applied cementitious-acrylic tank coating instead of a brush-applied three-component epoxy — or who are already standardised on Fosroc for the rest of a waterproofing package — often choose Nitocote CM210 instead, since it too carries potable-water approval for tank linings.
