STP ShaliProtek CI SA
A brush, roller or spray-applied migratory corrosion inhibitor that penetrates set concrete and forms a passivating film on embedded rebar, without breaking open the cover.
What is it?
A dual-phase, surface-applied migratory corrosion inhibitor from STP that soaks into hardened concrete and lays down a protective molecular film on the reinforcement steel.
Where is it used?
Existing RC structures under chloride or carbonation attack: bridge decks, flyovers, marine and coastal buildings, car parks, balconies and facades.
Why use it?
It restores passivity to corroding rebar and slows fresh corrosion without excavating the cover concrete, so protection can be extended over large areas quickly.
How is it applied?
Clean the surface, then apply by spray, roller or brush at 4 to 5 sq.m per litre; dense concrete takes 2 to 3 coats at roughly 8-hour intervals.
About STP ShaliProtek CI SA
STP ShaliProtek CI SA belongs to a class of products that engineers reach for when reinforcement has started to corrode but the structure is not yet ready for full breakout and repair. It is a liquid you apply to the face of the concrete rather than mix into it, which makes it useful on structures already in service. Once on the surface, the active molecules travel inward through the pore network by both liquid and vapour movement until they reach the steel, where they build a thin passivating layer that interferes with the electrochemical reaction driving the rust. The product carries a light amber colour, a specific gravity of 1.05 to 1.08 and a pH of around 9, and it is supplied chloride-free so it does not add to the very contamination it is meant to fight.
For contractors and consultants in India, the appeal is practical. Chloride ingress from marine air, de-icing salt on highways and carbonation in ageing urban concrete are the usual culprits behind spalling and delamination, and treating those problems by chasing out every affected area is slow and expensive. A surface-applied inhibitor lets a team cover large elevations, soffits and decks in a fraction of that time, either as a standalone slowing measure on structures that are still largely sound or as one layer within a wider repair and protection strategy. Space Arc Engineering supplies and applies ShaliProtek CI SA as an STP channel partner across Delhi NCR and on projects Pan-India, and can advise on where it fits against patch repair and coating options.
The technical insight
Reinforcement corrodes when chloride ions or carbonation break down the naturally alkaline passive film that concrete gives steel, setting up anode and cathode regions where iron dissolves and rust expands. ShaliProtek CI SA is described by STP as a dual-phase, bi-polar inhibitor, and both terms matter. Dual-phase means the molecules migrate through the concrete in liquid form through saturated pores and in vapour form through air-filled ones, so they can reach steel even where the cover is patchy or partly dry. Bi-polar means the chemistry adsorbs at both the anodic sites, where metal is being lost, and the cathodic sites, where the balancing reaction occurs, forming a monomolecular film that hinders the whole corrosion cell rather than just one half of it. Because the film is molecular and the product is vapour permeable, the concrete can still breathe and is not sealed under an impermeable skin. This is a maintenance and life-extension tool, not a structural cure: it curbs the rate of ongoing corrosion but does not rebuild section that has already been lost, so heavily deteriorated or spalled zones still need conventional breakout and mortar repair first.
Where it is used
- Corrosion protection of overhead, vertical and horizontal reinforced concrete elements
- Prestressed, precast and post-tensioned members where breakout repair is undesirable
- Marine and coastal structures exposed to airborne and splash-zone chlorides
- Bridge decks, flyovers and highway structures subject to de-icing salt
- Car parks, podiums and multi-level decks with chloride-laden runoff
- Building facades, balconies and parapets showing early carbonation-driven corrosion
- Pre-treatment of exposed reinforcement and cracks before installing repair materials
- Whole-area preventive treatment on ageing but still sound RC as a life-extension measure
Key advantages
- Protects embedded steel against corrosion, particularly chloride-driven attack
- Extends service life of structures in de-icing salt and marine environments
- Dual-phase action migrates through both liquid-filled and air-filled pores for deep reach
- Bi-polar chemistry addresses both anodic and cathodic zones of the corrosion cell
- Vapour permeable, so the concrete continues to breathe rather than being sealed
- Applied to the surface by spray, roller or brush with no cover-concrete removal
- Chloride-free formulation adds nothing harmful to the treated element
- Covers large areas quickly compared with localized breakout and patch repair
Limitations & considerations
- Not a substitute for structural repair; spalled or heavily deteriorated concrete must be broken out and reinstated first
- Effectiveness depends on the inhibitor actually reaching the steel, so cover thickness, saturation and pore structure influence results
- Dense or low-permeability substrates need 2 to 3 coats and slower penetration
- Requires thorough surface cleaning; dust, oil, curing compounds and coatings block penetration
- Periodic reapplication is expected in aggressive marine or de-icing salt exposure
- Performance on very high existing chloride levels is a mitigation, not a guaranteed reversal of corrosion
Selection & best practice
Start with a clean, sound surface. Remove all dust, dirt, oil, grease, curing compounds and old coatings by water blasting or shot blasting so the liquid can penetrate freely, and make sure new concrete is properly cured before treatment. Break out and reinstate any spalled or delaminated areas, and pre-treat cracks and joints with ShaliProtek CI SA before they are sealed. Where reinforcement is exposed during repair, the product can be applied directly onto the cleaned bars before repair mortar goes on. For the general surface, apply by spray, roller or brush at a coverage of 4 to 5 sq.m per litre; on dense substrates build up 2 to 3 coats with roughly 8-hour intervals between them so each coat can migrate inward. Observe standard health and safety: adequate ventilation, gloves and eye protection, and no solvents for cleaning skin. Store the material in a cool, dry, shaded place and use within its 12-month shelf life.

How we position STP ShaliProtek CI SA
ShaliProtek CI SA sits in STP’s protective and anti-corrosion range and pairs naturally with the wider STP repair and coating family: STP repair mortars for reinstating broken-out sections, ShaliProtek protective coatings to shield the finished surface, and STP crack-injection and sealing products for pre-treated cracks and joints. Where a client is standardized on Fosroc, Space Arc can offer the equivalent Fosroc corrosion-protection route. Across our other brands, Sika and Dr. Fixit also carry corrosion-inhibitor and RC-repair systems, and we can match the specification to whatever brand a project’s consultant has approved.
