What is it?

A tasteless, odourless, non-toxic black bituminous anti-corrosive coating from STP that cures to a hard, abrasion-resistant film. It conforms to IS 9862-1981 and IS 158-1981.

Where is it used?

Railway tracks, sleepers and coach/wagon underbodies, plus metallic and concrete structures both above and below ground that need a durable corrosion and moisture barrier.

Why use it?

One application delivers the full 100-micron dry film thickness a single coat would normally take two of, cutting labour and downtime while giving proven resistance to water, dilute acids and alkalis.

How is it applied?

Clean and de-grease the substrate, stir the material at low speed, then apply by brush or single-feed spray gun in one pass at 10-35°C on a dry surface (moisture below 5%).

About STP TankMastic 100

STP TankMastic 100 is purpose-built for one of the most demanding corrosion problems in Indian infrastructure: protecting steel and concrete that sits in ballast, soil or trackside conditions where moisture and mild chemical attack never let up. It is a bitumen-based coating engineered so that a single feed of brush or spray builds a complete 100-micron dry film, rather than the thin 40-50 micron passes most conventional bituminous paints leave behind. That single-coat efficiency is the reason it has become a standard specification on Indian Railways work, from track and sleeper protection to the underbody of coaches and wagons that face constant spray, grit and weathering.

Beyond the railway sector, the same properties make it a practical general-purpose barrier for buried pipework, tanks, foundation steel and concrete surfaces that will be back-filled and never inspected again. Because the film is tasteless, odourless and non-toxic once cured, it can be used in far more situations than a solvent-heavy industrial coating. Space Arc Engineering supplies TankMastic 100 as an authorised STP channel partner across Delhi NCR and pan-India, with technical support to match the product to the exposure so contractors and consultants specify the right build for the job.

The technical insight

The performance comes from a formulated bituminous binder with a controlled viscosity of 2000-2500 cps at 28°C. That rheology is the whole trick: it is fluid enough to brush or spray in a single pass, yet thixotropic enough to hold a heavy wet film on vertical and overhead surfaces without sagging or running to a thin skin. As the solvent flashes off, the bitumen coalesces into a continuous, hydrophobic membrane roughly 105 microns thick that physically isolates the substrate from water, oxygen and dissolved salts — the three drivers of electrochemical corrosion on steel and the cause of moisture ingress in concrete. Unlike thin multi-coat systems, the intact single-coat film has no inter-coat boundaries where adhesion can fail, so there are fewer weak points for water to migrate through. The cured coating stays chemically inert against dilute acids and alkalis, which is why it holds up in trackside and buried environments where run-off pH swings unpredictably.

Where it is used

  • Anti-corrosive coating for railway tracks, rails and steel sleepers
  • Protection of coach and wagon underbodies against spray, grit and weathering
  • Buried steel structures, pipework and tanks before back-filling
  • Concrete structures above and below ground needing a moisture and chemical barrier
  • General metallic fabrications exposed to humid or mildly aggressive conditions
  • Foundation steel and embedded structural members in soil contact
  • Protective lining where a tasteless, odourless, non-toxic bitumen film is required
  • Maintenance re-coating of previously bitumen-protected railway assets

Key advantages

  • Builds the full 100-micron (105 ± 5 µm) DFT in a single coat, cutting labour and application time
  • Fast drying: touch-dry in 2-4 hours and hard-dry in 6-8 hours keeps trackside work moving
  • Applies easily by brush or single-feed spray gun with no specialist equipment
  • Cures to a tough, abrasion-resistant film that survives ballast and handling
  • Excellent resistance to water plus dilute acids and alkalis
  • Tasteless, odourless and non-toxic once cured, widening where it can be used
  • Backed by IS 9862-1981 and IS 158-1981 conformance for specification confidence
  • Works on both metal and concrete, simplifying the coating schedule on mixed structures

Limitations & considerations

  • It is a bituminous coating and is black only — not suited where a decorative or light-reflective finish is needed
  • Not formulated for continuous immersion in strong or concentrated acids, solvents or aggressive chemicals — resistance is to dilute media and water
  • Application window is narrow: substrate and air must stay between +10°C and +35°C with substrate moisture below 5%
  • Low flash point (34°C) means it must be treated as flammable — keep away from heat, sparks and open flame during storage and use
  • Avoid over-thick films; heavy over-application can wrinkle and slow drying, so the single-coat build must not be doubled up wet-on-wet
  • Bituminous chemistry can bleed or soften under prolonged direct UV and high heat, so exposed long-term aesthetics are not its strength

Selection & best practice

Start with surface preparation, because adhesion of a single-coat film depends entirely on a clean substrate. Remove all loose gravel, dirt, oil, grease and foreign matter with a jet of dry air, then clean mechanically or by grinding to leave a smooth surface. Confirm the substrate moisture is under 5% and both substrate and ambient temperatures sit between +10°C and +35°C before you open the drum. Stir the material with a slow-speed mixer at roughly 400 rpm and a suitable paddle until homogeneous, then let it stand briefly so entrapped air escapes. Apply in one even pass by brush or single-feed spray gun, resisting the urge to build extra thickness — the formulation is designed to reach 100 microns in a single application, and over-thick films wrinkle and dry slowly. Allow 2-4 hours to touch-dry and 6-8 hours to hard-dry before back-filling, handling or exposing the coating. Store unopened drums in a cool, dry, shaded and airtight condition away from heat, and use within the 12-month shelf life.

Frequently asked questions

How many coats of TankMastic 100 do I need?
One. The product is formulated to build the full 100-micron dry film thickness (105 ± 5 µm) in a single brush or single-feed spray application, which is what sets it apart from thin multi-coat bituminous paints. Over-applying wet-on-wet to force extra thickness can cause wrinkling and slow drying.
What coverage should I plan for?
Theoretical coverage is 5.0-6.0 m² per litre on metal surfaces and 4.0-5.0 m² per litre on concrete, depending on surface roughness and ambient temperature around 40°C. Rougher, more porous substrates consume more material, so plan practical coverage on the conservative end.
Which standards does it conform to?
TankMastic 100 conforms to IS 9862-1981 and IS 158-1981, which is why it is accepted on Indian Railways and public-infrastructure specifications for bituminous anti-corrosive coatings.
Can it be used below ground and on buried steel?
Yes. It is designed for metallic and concrete structures both above and below ground, including buried pipework, tanks and foundation steel. Ensure the surface is clean and dry before coating, then allow it to hard-dry before back-filling.
What are the application temperature and moisture limits?
Apply only when substrate and ambient temperatures are between +10°C and +35°C, and substrate moisture content is below 5%. Outside this window, drying and film formation are unreliable.
What pack sizes and shelf life are available?
It is supplied in 20 L and 200 L drums with a 12-month shelf life in the original unopened sealed container. Store in a cool, dry, shaded and airtight condition away from heat, as the low 34°C flash point makes it flammable.

How we position STP TankMastic 100

Within the STP range, TankMastic 100 is the fast, single-coat bituminous workhorse for railway and buried-structure corrosion protection; where a job needs a heavier bitumen build or a coal-tar/epoxy-grade barrier for tougher chemical exposure, STP’s wider protective and bituminous coating line (such as its Shalikote and Shaliseal families) offers step-ups worth discussing with our team. When the specification calls for a modern pitch-modified polyurethane membrane rather than a solvent bitumen — for example a seamless, flexible waterproofing layer under screed on basements and podium decks — a Fosroc alternative from our portfolio is the better technical fit, and Space Arc supplies both brands so the choice can be made on performance, not availability. For potable-water tanks or wet areas that need a certified crack-bridging cementitious coating instead of a bituminous one, look to elastomeric cementitious systems like Fosroc Nitocote CM210, which we also stock.
