Sika ViscoCrete-4217 HE
A high-early-strength polycarboxylate superplasticizer that cuts water demand hard while holding flow, giving precast and RMC producers faster demoulding and a denser, more durable finish.
What is it?
A high-range water-reducing admixture based on a modified polycarboxylate ether (PCE) polymer, supplied as a light-brown liquid that complies with IS 9103 and ASTM C494.
Where is it used?
Precast and prestressed yards, ready-mix plants, self-compacting concrete, and pumped concrete for walls, columns and congested foundations across high-rise and infrastructure work.
Why use it?
It delivers very high water reduction without flow loss, accelerating early strength for quicker demoulding and cycle times while densifying the matrix for lower permeability.
How is it applied?
Dosed at 0.2-2.0% by weight of cementitious material, added to the mixing water or into the mixer once 50-70% of the water is in, followed by at least 60 seconds of wet mixing.
About Sika ViscoCrete-4217 HE
Sika ViscoCrete-4217 HE sits at the high-early-strength end of Sika’s ViscoCrete superplasticizer range, built for producers who are judged as much on turnaround as on 28-day cubes. The chemistry is a modified polycarboxylate ether: long comb-shaped polymer molecules that graft onto cement grains and hold them apart through steric hindrance rather than the simple electrostatic charge of older naphthalene and lignosulphonate admixtures. That difference is what lets the same mix flow freely at a much lower water-to-cement ratio, and it is why a well-dosed batch behaves like a far wetter one without the bleeding, segregation or strength penalty that extra water would bring.
For an Indian precast plant or ready-mix operation, the practical appeal is the “HE” in the name. Faster early strength means moulds are cleared and beds are re-used sooner, and pumped or self-compacting pours fill congested reinforcement cleanly without heavy vibration. The product is a light-brown liquid of roughly 1.13 kg/l density and pH of 6 or above, packed in 255 kg drums or supplied in bulk to plants running continuous batching. It carries a 12-month shelf life when kept in the recommended conditions, and it is formulated to meet both IS 9103 and ASTM C494, so it drops into specifications written to either standard.
The technical insight
The mechanism worth understanding is steric dispersion. A PCE molecule has a charged backbone that anchors to the cement particle and long non-ionic side chains that project outward like bristles. When two cement grains approach, those side chains physically overlap and push the grains apart, and because the effect is mechanical rather than purely electrostatic it persists even in high-alkalinity, high-sulphate cement systems where charge-based admixtures lose their grip. Freeing the water that would otherwise be trapped between flocculated grains is what produces the very high water reduction: you keep the flow you need at a markedly lower water content, and lower water content is the single biggest lever on strength, permeability and shrinkage. The high-early-strength behaviour comes from how efficiently that reduced water is used. With cement fully dispersed, hydration proceeds through a denser, better-packed paste, so usable strength arrives faster and the hardened matrix ends up with finer, less connected pores. That is the same porosity reduction that improves resistance to chloride ingress and water penetration, which is why a water reducer chosen for productivity also quietly improves durability.
Where it is used
- Precast and prestressed elements where fast demoulding and bed turnover drive plant output
- Self-compacting concrete (SCC) that must fill congested moulds and reinforcement without vibration
- Ready-mix concrete requiring consistent workability at a controlled water-cement ratio
- Pumped concrete for walls, columns and vertical elements in high-rise construction
- Foundations, rafts and transfer structures with heavily congested reinforcement
- Industrial floor slabs needing a dense, low-permeability, abrasion-resistant surface
- High-strength and high-performance concrete for commercial and infrastructure projects
- Concrete where reduced drying shrinkage and improved surface finish are specified
Key advantages
- Very high water reduction while retaining flow, enabling low w/c ratios without loss of workability
- Accelerated early strength for quicker demoulding, faster mould cycles and higher plant throughput
- Excellent cohesion and rheology, supporting self-compacting placement in congested sections
- Produces a dense, low-permeability matrix that improves durability and resistance to water ingress
- Reduced drying shrinkage compared with high-water mixes, lowering cracking risk
- Complies with both IS 9103 and ASTM C494, fitting Indian and international specifications
- Efficient dispersion means competitive dosing and cost-per-cubic-metre control
- Improved surface finish and reduced bleeding for cleaner as-cast faces
Limitations & considerations
- Overdosing can cause segregation, bleeding, excessive retardation or set delay, so the optimum dose must be fixed by trial mixes
- Performance is sensitive to cement chemistry and fines; not every PCE-cement combination behaves identically without adjustment
- As a high-early-strength grade it is tuned for fast strength rather than the longest possible slump retention, so long-haul RMC may need a retention-focused grade or a retarder
- It is a water reducer, not a set retarder, accelerator or air-entrainer; those effects need separate compatible admixtures
- Requires at least 60 seconds of wet mixing and correct addition timing to disperse fully
- Being water-based, it must be protected from frost and stored between +10C and +40C to avoid deterioration
Selection & best practice
Always establish the working dosage with laboratory or field trial mixes using the actual cement, fines and target slump, then confirm on the first plant batches rather than assuming a figure from the range. Add ViscoCrete-4217 HE to the mixing water, or into the mixer only after 50-70% of the water has gone in, and never onto dry cement or aggregate; follow with a minimum of 60 seconds wet mixing so the polymer disperses evenly. Keep the water-cement ratio disciplined, because the whole benefit is realised by taking water out, not by adding admixture to a wet mix. Do not blend it in the same charge with an incompatible admixture without a compatibility check, and where extended workability is needed on long transport, pair it with a suitable Sika retention product or retarder rather than pushing the dose. Store drums sealed, out of direct sunlight, and protected from frost, and use within the 12-month shelf life.

Industry use cases
Precast & Prestressed
High early strength lets yards strip moulds and re-tension beds faster, lifting daily element output without compromising the 28-day grade.
Ready-Mix Concrete
Consistent flow at a controlled w/c ratio helps RMC plants hit slump and strength targets batch after batch with efficient dosing.
High-Rise Buildings
Pumpable, cohesive mixes place cleanly in columns, cores and heavily reinforced transfer structures on tall commercial projects.
Infrastructure & Foundations
Self-compacting behaviour fills congested rafts, pile caps and deep sections fully, giving dense, durable, low-permeability concrete.
Industrial Flooring
Low water demand produces dense slabs with a tighter pore structure, improving abrasion resistance and reducing surface dusting.

How we position Sika ViscoCrete-4217 HE
Within the Sika family, ViscoCrete-4217 HE is the high-early-strength choice; where a project needs longer slump retention for long-haul ready-mix or hot-weather placement, look at a retention-focused grade such as Sika ViscoCrete-2002 or a Sika retarder dosed alongside it, and for very high-performance mixes the ViscoCrete SKY range steps up the polymer technology. If a job also calls for controlled expansion grouting, curing compounds or waterproofing admixtures, those come from Sika’s wider concrete portfolio and pair cleanly with this superplasticizer. Space Arc also stocks equivalent PCE superplasticizers from Fosroc, MC-Bauchemie and Master Builders Solutions, so if you are standardising a site on one supplier we can match this product to the nearest grade in your preferred brand.
Fosroc Auramix 400 — A specifier already standardised on Fosroc would choose Auramix 400 as the equivalent PCE superplasticizer, particularly where extended workability retention for self-compacting or long-haul pumped concrete is the priority.
