Sika FloorJoint EX A
A prefabricated glass-carbon fibre reinforced polyurethane panel that replaces failure-prone metal expansion joints in heavy-traffic industrial floors with a flush, metal-free, wheel-friendly detail.
What is it?
A factory-made composite panel of glass and carbon fibre reinforced polyurethane, shaped with a waved eccentric profile and installed into the expansion-joint gap of an industrial concrete floor.
Where is it used?
Warehouses, logistics hubs, cold stores, food and pharma plants, hospitals, assembly workshops and showrooms where forklifts and pallet trucks cross the joint continuously.
Why use it?
It carries wheel loads across the gap without the spalled edges, rattling and corrosion that plague steel-armoured joints, giving a quiet, hygienic, near-invisible finish.
How is it applied?
The slot is cut and cleaned, the panel is bedded on a Sika epoxy adhesive, levelled flush with the floor, then sanded and trafficked after about 24 hours.
About Sika FloorJoint EX A
Sika FloorJoint EX A is Sika’s answer to a problem every plant engineer knows well: the expansion joint is almost always the first thing to fail in an industrial floor. Traditional joints rely on steel angles or elastomeric nosings that chip, debond and corrode under the relentless point loading of loaded forklifts and pallet trucks. This panel takes a different route. It is a prefabricated slab of glass-carbon fibre reinforced polyurethane, machined in the factory to exact dimensions and delivered ready to bed into a cut slot. Because it arrives as a finished component rather than a poured or assembled detail, the site variability that usually determines whether a joint lasts two years or twenty is largely designed out.
The defining feature is the waved, eccentric joint geometry. Rather than presenting a wheel with a straight open gap to drop into and hammer against, the profile keeps at least one point of the tyre in contact with a solid bearing surface at all times. Loads are spread and handed off progressively as the wheel crosses, so the shock loading that destroys conventional joints never builds up. The panel is entirely metal-free, so there is nothing to rust in a wet or wash-down environment, and the polyurethane matrix shrugs off the cleaning chemicals and spillages common in food, pharmaceutical and chemical facilities. Finished grey and grindable flush, it reads almost as part of the slab rather than an interruption in it.
The technical insight
The engineering that matters here is load transfer, not just gap covering. A standard expansion joint leaves a void; every wheel that reaches the edge delivers an impact into an unsupported concrete arris, and repeated micro-impacts fatigue and spall that edge until the joint is a trough. Sika FloorJoint EX A’s eccentric wave means the contact line never sits over open space. As a wheel advances, the panel’s shaped bearing faces keep supporting it while the substrate on the far side picks up the load, converting a sharp impact event into a smooth, continuous transfer. The fibre reinforcement is what makes this possible in a thin section. Glass fibre gives the composite tensile and flexural resilience, while carbon fibre adds stiffness so the panel does not deflect and pump under load. The result is a component with compressive strength around 110 N/mm and tensile strength around 50 N/mm in a panel just 15 mm thick, bonded to the slab with a rigid epoxy so the whole assembly behaves as one monolithic surface rather than a patch sitting in a hole.
Where it is used
- Expansion and isolation joints in new-build warehouse and logistics floors carrying continuous forklift traffic
- Refurbishment and reinstatement of failed steel or elastomeric joints in existing industrial slabs
- Food processing and pharmaceutical facilities where hygiene and wash-down chemical resistance are essential
- Cold stores and controlled-temperature environments needing a durable, non-corroding joint
- Hospitals, laboratories and clean production areas requiring a quiet, flush, low-maintenance floor
- Assembly halls, maintenance workshops and machine shops with medium to heavy wheeled loads
- Showrooms and retail back-of-house where an unobtrusive, near-invisible joint finish is preferred
- Ground-supported screeds and concrete slabs with normal to medium-heavy wear across the joint line
Key advantages
- Waved eccentric profile spreads wheel loads and eliminates the edge-impact that destroys conventional joints
- Completely metal-free, so nothing corrodes in wet, humid or wash-down conditions
- Prefabricated to precise dimensions, giving consistent quality independent of site workmanship
- High chemical resistance suits food, pharma and industrial cleaning regimes
- Grindable, flush surface leaves a smooth, near-seamless floor with no lip to jolt wheels
- Drivable roughly 24 hours after installation, minimising plant downtime
- Quiet under traffic, removing the rattle and vibration typical of steel-armoured joints
- Bfl-s1 fire classification to DIN EN 13501-1 supports use in occupied and regulated buildings
Limitations & considerations
- Designed for normal to medium-heavy wear, not for extreme point loads such as very heavy defence or steel-mill traffic without specialist review
- Fixed panel size of 1200 x 255 x 15 mm means the existing or cut slot must suit the profile geometry
- Correct joint width and slot preparation are critical; the panel is not a universal drop-in for every legacy joint detail
- Installation demands a clean, sound, dry substrate and controlled ambient conditions to bond reliably
- Bonded with a rigid epoxy adhesive, so it is not intended to accommodate large ongoing structural movement like a flexible sealant would
- Grey RAL 7037 only; it is a functional industrial finish, not a decorative or colour-matched element
Selection & best practice
Success with this panel is decided during preparation. Confirm the existing or newly formed joint slot matches the panel geometry, then saw-cut and clean the recess so it is sound, dust-free and dry, with substrate moisture below about 4% and no laitance or contamination. Work within the recommended window of +10C to +30C for both air and substrate, keep relative humidity at or below 80%, and ensure the substrate is at least 3C above the dew point so the epoxy adhesive cures properly. Bed the panel on the specified Sika epoxy adhesive, level it precisely flush with the surrounding floor, and support it while the adhesive gains strength. Once cured, sand or grind the surface flush to remove any lip, and hold traffic off for around 24 hours before returning forklifts and pallet trucks to the line. Store panels flat and horizontal in cool, dry conditions before use so they stay true.

Industry use cases
Warehousing & Logistics
High-throughput distribution floors where forklifts and reach trucks cross joints thousands of times a day need a detail that will not spall; the eccentric profile keeps wheels supported and the floor line intact.
Food & Beverage Processing
Wash-down areas and wet production halls benefit from a metal-free, chemically resistant joint that cannot rust and will not harbour contamination at a failed steel edge.
Pharmaceutical & Healthcare
Cleanrooms, hospital corridors and lab floors gain a quiet, flush, hygienic joint that supports controlled environments and trolley traffic without vibration or debris.
Cold Storage
Refrigerated warehouses avoid the corrosion and thermal-movement damage of metal joints, keeping a durable, drivable surface in demanding temperature conditions.
Manufacturing & Assembly
Machine shops and assembly halls with medium-heavy wheeled loads get a robust, flush joint that reduces maintenance shutdowns and the safety risk of open or lipped joints.

How we position Sika FloorJoint EX A
Sika FloorJoint EX A sits at the premium end of Space Arc’s expansion-joint range, and is best specified where floor traffic and hygiene make a metal-free composite the right call. It bonds to the slab with a Sika epoxy adhesive from the same family, and pairs naturally with Sika’s Sikafloor resin flooring systems where a full seamless floor plus durable joints is the goal; Sikadur structural epoxies cover heavier bonding and anchoring needs alongside it. Where a project instead calls for a flexible sealed movement joint rather than a load-bearing panel, our Fosroc range (Nitoseal and Colpor gun-grade and cold-pour sealants) and Sika’s own Sikaflex polyurethane sealants are the more economical fit. For lighter-duty floors or straightforward joint sealing on a tighter budget, talk to us about the Fosroc and Dr. Fixit alternatives we stock so the specification matches the actual traffic and exposure rather than over-engineering the detail.
