MC-Bauchemie ombran FT
A hybrid-silicate lining system engineered specifically to protect oil, grease and light-liquid separator tanks from fuel, chemical and abrasive attack.
What is it?
A three-component (resin + hardener + mineral powder) hybrid-silicate coating that is hand-trowelled or spray/spin-applied over concrete, mortar, steel and stainless steel to form a dense, black, chemically inert lining.
Where is it used?
Inside grease traps, oil and light-liquid separators, underground sewer manholes, and concrete retention basins or bunds handling substances hazardous to water – fuel yards, workshop pits, ETP chambers, tank farms.
Why use it?
Plain cement plaster or paint linings soften, blister and lose bond once diesel, engine oil or grease works into them; ombran FT is test-certified for separator use and stays intact under continuous hydrocarbon exposure, and it is electrostatically conductive so static charge doesn’t build up in fuel-handling chambers.
How is it applied?
Resin and hardener are power-mixed first, the powder is folded in, and the mortar-like coating is trowelled on as a thin scratch coat followed by a fresh-on-fresh top coat to a minimum 4 mm thickness above the aggregate tips; larger structures can be spray or spin-applied.
About MC-Bauchemie ombran FT
Most grease traps and oil separators on Indian sites are still lined with plain cement plaster or a coat of paint, and both fail within a couple of years once diesel, cooking oil or engine grease starts working into the concrete. ombran FT is MC-Bauchemie’s answer to that specific problem: a hybrid-silicate coating built from three factory-dosed components – a resin, a hardener and a mineral powder – that cure into a dense, black, trowel-applied lining designed to sit inside fat separators, light-liquid (petrol/diesel/oil) interceptors and underground sewer manholes without softening, blistering or losing bond under constant hydrocarbon contact. It carries European test certification for separator use (EN 1825-1 and EN 858-1) and German WHG building-authority approval for concrete retention structures handling substances hazardous to water – credentials that exist because separator linings are a safety-critical, tightly regulated application in Europe, not a cosmetic finish.
For Space Arc’s Delhi NCR and pan-India project list, ombran FT earns its place on jobs that ordinary waterproofing coatings or repair mortars simply are not rated for: kitchen grease traps in hotels and food-processing plants, oil/water separators under fuel stations and vehicle workshops, and bunds or sumps around tank farms and chemical stores where a coating has to survive constant contact with fuel, oils and industrial chemicals rather than just water. It sits within MC-Bauchemie’s broader ombran range for underground sewer and manhole rehabilitation, so where a project also needs structural patching of chamber walls or a general concrete-repair mortar before coating, our technical team pairs ombran FT with the right product from MC-Bauchemie’s concrete-repair and surface-protection lines rather than trying to make one coating do both jobs.
The technical insight
The chemistry is worth understanding before you specify it. ombran FT isn’t a conventional two-pack epoxy or a cementitious slurry – MC-Bauchemie classes it as a “hybrid-silicate” system, where the resin/hardener reaction locks a mineral powder filler into a dense, low-permeability matrix that behaves more like a hard mortar than a paint film, which is why it carries compressive and bending-tensile strength values that paints simply don’t have. That process discipline shows up in the datasheet: resin and hardener must be power-mixed at a minimum 500 rpm for a full 2 minutes before the powder is added, hand-mixing and part-batching are explicitly disallowed, and no water may be added at any stage since it disrupts the cure chemistry. The 3 K minimum dewpoint-distance requirement and the 24-hour post-application protection from standing water and direct sun exist because early moisture contact before the silicate network has set can compromise the finished bond – a real risk inside a below-ground chamber where humidity is hard to control.
Where it is used
- Lining new grease/fat separator tanks in hotel and restaurant kitchens and food-processing plants
- Lining light-liquid (petrol, diesel, oil) separators at fuel stations and vehicle workshops
- Rehabilitation of manholes and accessible underground sewer chambers
- Coating concrete retention basins and bunds for substances hazardous to water at fuel depots and chemical stores
- Re-lining separator tanks where an earlier coating has failed under hydrocarbon attack
- Protecting oil-interceptor sumps in transport depots, parking basements and service areas
- Coating ETP/STP chambers carrying oily or greasy trade effluent
- Bonding onto exposed steel and stainless-steel fittings inside separator chambers
Key advantages
- Purpose-built for continuous hydrocarbon and chemical immersion, not a general coating adapted for the job
- European test certification for separator applications (EN 1825-1, EN 858-1) plus German WHG structural approval
- Electrostatically conductive, relevant where static build-up in a fuel-handling chamber is a safety concern
- High early strength (approx. 25 MPa compressive at just 1 day) shortens time before the tank returns to service
- Single system bonds to concrete, mineral mortar, steel and stainless steel in chambers with mixed substrates
- Hand-trowel or spray/spin application scales from a single restaurant grease trap to a large tank-farm bund
- No water addition and a fixed mix ratio reduce on-site batching errors
- 1-year shelf life in unopened, correctly stored packs, useful for phased or multi-site projects
Limitations & considerations
- Narrow application window (+10 to +25 degC substrate/air/material, max 80% RH during coating) means monsoon or peak-summer conditions may need covered working areas or careful scheduling
- Mandatory power mixing at minimum 500 rpm; hand-mixing and part-batching are explicitly ruled out, so it needs the right equipment and a briefed crew, not an ad-hoc site team
- Roughly 30-minute working time once mixed, so batch sizes must be planned around the applicator’s actual coating speed
- Minimum 4 mm build coat makes it a structural-grade lining rather than a thin decorative or touch-up finish, with a corresponding material and labour cost
- No Indian Standard directly covers separator coatings yet, so compliance references stay European (EN/WHG); IS-referenced specifications need the requirements mapped across manually
- Supplied only in black, which limits its use where a lighter, inspection-friendly finish is preferred
Selection & best practice
Treat ombran FT as a mortar-grade lining job, not a paint job. Prepare the substrate exactly per MC-Bauchemie’s general application advice for hybrid-silicate systems, then power-mix the resin and hardener alone for a full 2 minutes before slowly folding in the powder and mixing again at high speed – never mix by hand or in part-batches, and never add water. Apply a thin, high-pressure “scratch coat” first, then follow fresh-on-fresh with the main coat compacted to at least 4 mm above the aggregate tips, smoothing out trowel marks immediately since working time is only about 30 minutes. Hold the chamber’s air, material and substrate temperature between 10-25 degC and keep the dewpoint distance at 3 K or more throughout application, and once applied, shield the coating from standing water and direct sun for a full 24 hours – light condensate is tolerable, liquid contact isn’t. For anything beyond hand application on a small trap, involve MC-Bauchemie’s technical team on spray or MRT spin-application before the job is planned, and run a trial patch to confirm actual coverage on your specific substrate.

How we position MC-Bauchemie ombran FT
ombran FT sits inside MC-Bauchemie’s ombran range for underground sewer systems and manhole/separator rehabilitation, and Space Arc stocks it specifically for the separator and retention-basin lining jobs that general waterproofing coatings and concrete-repair mortars are not tested for. Where a chamber also needs structural patching, spalled-concrete repair or crack injection before coating, our technical team pairs it with the appropriate product from MC-Bauchemie’s concrete-repair and surface-protection lines rather than stretching one product across both scopes. On the competitive side, international majors including Fosroc do offer epoxy and polyurethane-based protective coatings for chemical and hydrocarbon exposure, but none are marketed with ombran FT’s specific EN 1825-1/EN 858-1 separator test certification or German WHG structural approval – so on a specification that explicitly calls for separator-standard compliance, the ombran system is the more direct fit; for general chemical-resistant coating work without that specific certification requirement, a broader epoxy/PU range is a reasonable alternative and Space Arc is happy to quote either.
