MC-Bauchemie MC-Montan Seal ST 01
A bentonite-based shield-tail sealant built to keep TBM brush rings watertight against groundwater, soil and annulus grout on mechanised tunnel drives.
What is it?
A pasty, bentonite-based sealing compound formulated for the shield-tail brush chambers of tunnel boring machines — a pumped, grease-type compound, not a caulking-gun sealant.
Where is it used?
Injected continuously into the two to four rings of wire brushes at a TBM’s tail skin, where the shield meets the erected segmental lining, on EPB, slurry/mixshield and hard-rock gripper machines.
Why use it?
A worn or under-packed tail seal is a common route for groundwater, soil fines and even annulus backfill grout to track into the erector and back-up gantry — MC-Montan Seal ST 01 packs that gap and holds pressure while still pumping cleanly through standard grease lines.
How is it applied?
Metered and injected ring-by-ring through the TBM’s tail-seal grease lines using conventional grease pumps or MC-Bauchemie’s matched HDT-Montan Device HD pump, dosed against advance rate and annulus pressure rather than applied by hand.
About MC-Bauchemie MC-Montan Seal ST 01
Shield-tail sealing rarely gets the attention that segment design or annulus grout mix design gets, but on a mechanised tunnel drive it’s one of the few places where a small failure can stop the whole machine. The tail skin is the narrow gap between the moving shield and the freshly erected segmental ring behind it, closed off by two to four rows of steel-wire brushes. MC-Montan Seal ST 01 is the grease-like, bentonite-based compound that packs those brush chambers, so groundwater, soil fines and even the annulus backfill grout being pumped in behind the ring can’t track forward into the machine. It stays pasty rather than curing hard — a tail seal has to keep moving with the ring-build cycle for the length of the drive, not set solid.
For Indian contractors this sits squarely in metro rail, sewer/water tunnelling and hydropower headrace work — projects where an EPB or slurry shield is boring continuously and tail-seal grease consumption is planned in tonnes, not litres. Because it’s a batched, pumped consumable tied to a specific machine and drive programme, it doesn’t move through the same channel as a bag of waterproofing coating or a tube of PU sealant. Space Arc sources it against project-specific tunnelling programmes, coordinating drum logistics to the TBM backup gantry and dosing input from MC-Bauchemie’s MC Underground specialists — rather than holding it as shelf stock, which is the honest reality of how this category actually gets bought and used on site.
The technical insight
The two numbers that matter on the datasheet are density (1.2 kg/dm³) and consistency measured by ASTM D 217 cone penetration (~190 ± 10 mm) — the same method used to grade lubricating greases. That penetration value tells a tunnelling engineer whether the compound will flow through long grease lines to the tail skin without separating, and still hold its shape once packed between the brushes under annulus pressure. The bentonite base gives it a mild self-healing, swelling character against water ingress while staying chemically inert to the brush rings, and because it never cures to a hard set, the same batch keeps working ring after ring for the length of the drive. Fire resistance and non-flammability matter here for a different reason than in a building sealant — it’s about underground fire-safety compliance on an active TBM, not fire-rating a joint.
Where it is used
- Shield-tail brush chamber sealing on EPB (earth-pressure-balance) TBMs
- Slurry-shield and mixshield tail-seal packing
- Hard-rock / gripper TBM shield sealing
- Metro rail twin-bore running tunnels and cross-passage drives
- Sewer, storm-water and raw-water conveyance tunnels bored by mechanised shields
- Road and rail underpass tunnels executed with shield machines
- Hydropower headrace and tailrace tunnel drives
- External (shield-skin-to-ground) sealing during ring-build stoppages
Key advantages
- High consistency but still pumps cleanly through long tail-seal grease lines without segregating
- Resists being pushed back out once packed into the brush rings, even under annulus grout pressure
- Bentonite base is chemically inert and low-impact for wet spoil/muck handling and disposal
- Fire-resistant and non-flammable, meeting underground fire-safety expectations on an active TBM
- Runs on standard tail-seal grease pump equipment — no need to re-engineer the machine’s grease system
- Can be paired with MC-Bauchemie’s HDT-Montan Device HD pump and MC Underground’s on-site dosing support
- Factory production control to DIN EN ISO 9001 gives batch-to-batch consistency on a continuous drive
- 12-month shelf life in unopened drums gives a drive programme room to hold buffer stock
Limitations & considerations
- Not a building or expansion-joint sealant — it has no place in facade, movement-joint or wet-area sealing work
- Must be stored frost-free, dry, cool and out of direct sun; performance isn’t guaranteed outside that window
- Manufacturer literature carries no cure time, tensile or compressive strength figures, because the product is meant to stay plastic in service, not cure
- Supply and dosing support typically route through MC-Bauchemie’s MC Underground tunnelling specialists rather than general branch stock, so lead time needs planning into the drive schedule
- Only available in 60 kg and 230 kg drums, so high-advance-rate drives need real storage space planned on the backup gantry
- It supplements a tail seal, it doesn’t rescue one — badly worn brush rings still need mechanical repair
Selection & best practice
Size the dosing rate to ring advance and measured tail-void/annulus pressure rather than a fixed per-ring figure, and re-check it whenever ground conditions or the grout mix change. Keep drums frost-free, dry and out of direct sun on the backup gantry, and purge grease lines before switching batches to avoid air pockets forming at the brush rings. Run a short pump-compatibility and dosing trial with MC Underground before mobilising a new TBM drive, especially if the machine’s existing grease pump wasn’t originally matched to this consistency grade.

How we position MC-Bauchemie MC-Montan Seal ST 01
MC-Montan Seal ST 01 sits inside MC-Bauchemie’s tunnelling systems range under the MC-Montan name, alongside related shield-tail sealant grades such as the ST 11 variant used on other machine/ground combinations — the right grade is picked by MC Underground’s engineers against your TBM type and ground conditions, not off a shelf. It’s a genuinely narrow category: mainstream construction-chemical brands with strong India retail presence, Fosroc included, don’t manufacture TBM tail-seal consumables, so there’s no honest like-for-like Fosroc alternative to offer here. The realistic point of comparison is other tunnelling-focused suppliers with dedicated underground/mining divisions, Sika’s tunnelling business among them — and in practice the choice is usually locked in early by whichever chemical partner is already engineering the project’s annulus grout and segment waterproofing, since tail-seal sealant, backfill grout and gasket compatibility get specified together.
