MC-Bauchemie ombran W

The one-minute leak plug MC-Bauchemie built for manholes, sewer chambers and basements — stops running water by hand pressure, before the real waterproofing goes on.

What is it?

A one-component, cement-bound plugging mortar. Mixed with water on site, it stiffens in about a minute and expands slightly as it hydrates, so instead of just sticking to the substrate it wedges itself into the leak path and physically chokes off the flow.

Where is it used?

Manholes and inspection chambers, sewer and drainage structures, pipe penetrations, basement and retaining walls, lift pits, sumps, water tanks and STP/ETP chambers — anywhere water is actively running or under pressure and needs to be stopped fast, ahead of the permanent waterproofing.

Why use it?

Because most waterproofing coatings and membranes cannot be applied over a wet, running leak. ombran W buys the contractor a dry, sealed substrate in minutes, without dewatering the structure or shutting down the line, so the real tanking system can go on properly instead of being rushed onto damp concrete.

How is it applied?

The defect is cut back to sound concrete at a 45° key, at least 30 mm deep. A small hand-mixed batch of ombran W and water (roughly 1:0.2 by weight) is pressed firmly into the deepest part of the leak with a gloved hand and held under pressure for about a minute, working outward from the centre so the plug doesn’t get pushed off the substrate before it sets.

About MC-Bauchemie ombran W

ombran W is MC-Bauchemie’s rapid-curing plugging mortar for one job: stopping water that is actively moving through a crack, joint, pipe penetration or honeycombed patch of concrete. It sits inside MC-Bauchemie’s ombran range for underground sewer systems and manhole rehabilitation, and is referenced against the DIN 19573 mortar classification used for sewer and manhole repair works. The chemistry is deliberately low-tech for site conditions: a single cement-bound powder hand-mixed with water in small batches, with no resin components, no primers and no pot-life chemistry to manage under a manhole cover in the monsoon.

What sets it apart from an ordinary quick-set repair mortar is the swelling reaction during hydration — the mortar expands slightly as it cures, so it locks mechanically into the leak path rather than relying purely on bond to a wet, often contaminated substrate. It reaches roughly 23 MPa compressive strength within a day and around 35 MPa by 28 days, so crews can move on to grouting, rendering or coating work quickly. But it is a rigid mineral plug, not a flexible waterproofing system, and MC-Bauchemie is explicit that a durable seal needs a follow-up coating such as ombran MHP over the plugged area — ombran W buys the dry substrate that lets the real waterproofing be installed correctly.

The technical insight

The detail worth flagging to a specifier is the one-minute processing time. That is not a marketing number — it is the actual working window once water hits the powder, and it drives how the product has to be batched and placed: small hand-mixed lots, immediate placement, sustained hand pressure for a minute to hold the plug in place while the expansion and initial set take hold. Compare that with ordinary non-shrink repair mortars that give 20–30 minutes of working time but do nothing against a live leak — they simply wash out before they set. ombran W trades working time for the ability to fight flowing or mildly pressurised water, which is exactly the trade-off a manhole bench, a pipe penetration or a basement construction joint under hydrostatic head needs. The “does not contain substances that promote corrosion” note in the data sheet also matters in sewer and RCC work, where you don’t want a plug of uncertain chemistry sitting against reinforcement for the next twenty years.

Where it is used

  • Plugging active, running or lightly pressurised water leaks in manhole benches, chamber walls and channel inverts
  • Sealing pipe penetrations and pipe-to-wall collar connections in sewer, drainage and utility structures
  • Retro-sealing failed or gapped manhole ring joints and precast chamber sections
  • Stopping running water at construction joints and cold joints before a permanent waterproofing membrane or coating is applied
  • Sealing internal corners and wall-to-floor junctions in basements and water-retaining structures
  • Emergency leak arrest in lift pits, pump sumps and dewatering wells during shutdown repairs
  • First-aid sealing of seepage through cracks and honeycombed concrete in tunnels, culverts and underground ducts
  • Spot-plugging leaks in STP/ETP tanks and chambers ahead of full tank rehabilitation

Key advantages

  • Stops flowing or lightly pressurised water in about a minute, by hand, without dewatering the structure first
  • Expands slightly during hydration, giving a mechanical key into the leak path rather than relying on bond alone
  • Cement-based and formulated without corrosion-promoting substances, so it doesn’t compromise nearby reinforcement
  • Genuinely single-component — hand-mix with water on site, no resin ratios or primers to get wrong under a manhole cover
  • High early strength (around 23 MPa at one day) lets crews follow on with rendering, grouting or coating the same shift
  • Designed to pair with ombran MHP as a topcoat, giving a documented, engineered repair-plus-waterproof build-up
  • Referenced against the DIN 19573 WW mortar classification used for sewer and manhole repair, useful where specs call for it
  • Small 15 kg pack suits patch-repair and leak-plugging volumes — no need to open a bulk bag for a handful of leaks

Limitations & considerations

  • It is a rigid plug, not a flexible waterproofing membrane — MC-Bauchemie itself recommends a follow-up coating like ombran MHP for a durable seal
  • The roughly one-minute processing time is unforgiving; it has to be mixed in small batches and placed immediately, which takes a trained hand
  • Being a rigid mineral material, it can crack if the structure later moves, settles, or picks up new cracking from adjacent construction work
  • Coverage is genuinely defect-dependent — MC-Bauchemie’s own data sheet says quantities must be trial-tested on site, which makes it awkward to pin down for a flat BOQ rate
  • It is a spot-repair and plugging mortar, not a solution for large-area waterproofing or wide, continuously moving cracks
  • Application is limited to +5°C to +30°C air, substrate and material temperature, so peak summer slab surfaces need shading or timing around

Selection & best practice

Cut the leak path back to sound, dust-free concrete at a 45° key at least 30 mm deep — adhesion fails on feather edges and loose material, not on the product. Mix only what one gloved hand can place in under a minute; batching a full bucket at once just wastes material on the trowel. Press the mortar hard into the deepest part of the defect and hold firm pressure for a full one to two minutes, then trim excess working outward from the centre — cutting inward risks lifting the plug before it has taken its set. On chambers with genuinely heavy inflow, plug the worst point first to cut volume, then work outward to the smaller seeps. Once the leak is dry, don’t leave ombran W exposed as the finished surface on anything you expect to see again — follow up with ombran MHP or an equivalent coating system so the rigid plug is protected and the repair is actually waterproof, not just dry today.

Frequently asked questions

Can ombran W really stop water that’s actively running, or only damp seepage?
It’s built for actively running and lightly pressurised water, not just dampness — that’s the point of the swelling reaction. For strong, high-pressure jetting water, expect to fight it in stages: plug the worst point first to cut the head, then seal the remaining seeps.
Do we need to dewater the chamber or shut off the line before applying it?
No — the whole reason to specify ombran W over a normal repair mortar is that it can be pressed in and held by hand while water is still moving, so you avoid pumping down a manhole or stopping a sewer line just to make a patch repair.
Is ombran W a complete waterproofing solution on its own?
No. It’s a rigid, mineral plugging mortar, and MC-Bauchemie’s own literature is clear that a durable, long-term seal needs a follow-up coating such as ombran MHP. Treat ombran W as the leak-stop step, not the finished waterproofing.
How much time do we actually get once it’s mixed?
Around a minute of processing time, so mix small hand-sized batches per defect rather than a full bucket, and have your labour ready to place and hold pressure immediately.
What pack size and shelf life should we plan for?
It comes in a 15 kg grey bucket, and unopened packs keep for about 6 months if stored sealed, dry, and between +5°C and +25°C.
Is there a Fosroc product Space Arc also stocks that does the same job?
Yes — Fosroc Renderoc Plug is the closest equivalent: a single-component, rapid-setting cementitious plug for pressurised water leaks. Some specifiers choose it simply to keep a single-brand Fosroc submittal for the rest of a repair package.

How we position MC-Bauchemie ombran W

Within MC-Bauchemie’s own system, ombran W is meant to be read alongside ombran MHP, the protective coating MC-Bauchemie recommends applying over a plugged area for a lasting, monolithic seal — Space Arc typically specifies the two together on manhole and chamber rehabilitation scopes rather than leaving the rigid plug as the finished surface. It also sits inside the wider ombran family for underground sewer and manhole repair, so projects already running an ombran repair-mortar system can standardise on it without introducing a second brand’s chemistry into the same structure. Where a client or consultant has already standardised on Fosroc’s repair range, Fosroc Renderoc Plug is a genuine, commonly specified alternative for the same job — a single-component, rapid-setting cementitious plug for pressurised leaks, and one Space Arc also supplies — so the choice usually comes down to which system the rest of the repair package is already built around rather than a real performance gap between the two.

Preferred brand · Fosroc equivalent

Fosroc Renderoc Plug — Specifiers who have already standardised on a Fosroc repair system for the rest of the structure often pick Renderoc Plug for its BS EN 1504-3 Class R1 classification and to keep a single-brand submittal, though its stop-leak performance is comparable to ombran W.
