What is it?

The hardener component of Pidilite’s Dr. Fixit Triflex PMMA system — a fine powder catalyst, supplied in pre-weighed 0.5 kg packs, that cures Triflex ProTect or ProDetail base resin into a solid waterproofing membrane.

Where is it used?

Wherever a Dr. Fixit Triflex PMMA resin is being applied — flat and pitched roofs, podium decks and terrace gardens, metal roof and gutter detailing, pipe penetrations, parapet upstands, and concrete/metal/PVC/glass junctions.

Why use it?

Without it the Triflex resin never cures at all. It is what converts the liquid PMMA into a hard, elastic, root-resistant membrane in around 45 minutes, letting a roof be waterproofed in a single working day instead of several.

How is it applied?

Weighed at 20 gm per kg of base resin, mixed into Triflex ProTect or ProDetail with a slow-speed mixer for at least 2 minutes until lump-free, transferred and re-stirred, then applied within the 15–20 minute pot life.

About Dr. Fixit Triflex Catalyst

Ask most site engineers about Dr. Fixit and they will picture a bucket of acrylic roof coating. Triflex Catalyst belongs to a different, more specialised shelf. It is the hardener half of Dr. Fixit’s Triflex system, a PMMA (polymethyl methacrylate) liquid-applied waterproofing technology Pidilite offers for large, spec-driven roofing and detailing work: podium decks, industrial roofs, metal gutters, skylight upstands, and the junctions where a roof membrane meets a pipe, a parapet or glazing. PMMA resins do not air-dry the way acrylic or PU coatings do; they cure through a chemical reaction, and that reaction only starts once the right amount of catalyst goes in. Triflex Catalyst is that trigger, a fine powder hardener supplied in pre-weighed 0.5 kg packs, stirred into the Triflex ProTect (roof) or ProDetail (detailing) base resin at a fixed 20 gm per kilogram of resin.

What makes this component worth understanding on its own is how much of the system’s performance rides on it. Get the dosage or mixing wrong and the resin either skins over too slowly to be practical on an Indian summer roof, or kicks off before the crew has finished laying the reinforcing fleece. Because the whole kit, base resin, catalyst, fleece and substrate-specific primer, is engineered as one calibrated system, Space Arc supplies and applies it as a matched set rather than treating the catalyst as a commodity hardener sourced loose or swapped in from another PMMA brand. If you are specifying a Triflex job in Delhi NCR, budget for the catalyst as part of the kit quantity, not as an afterthought.

The technical insight

PMMA waterproofing resins cure by free-radical polymerisation, the same broad chemistry family as the acrylic bone cement used in orthopaedics, adapted for roofing. Left alone, the methacrylate base resin is stable indefinitely in its sealed drum. Triflex Catalyst supplies the initiator that kicks off cross-linking of the polymer chains, turning a pourable liquid into a hard, rubber-like film within minutes rather than the hours or days an acrylic coating needs. At 20°C, mixed Triflex ProDetail carries roughly a 15-minute pot life and ProTect about 20 minutes, with the film touch-dry inside 45 minutes; because the reaction is exothermic and accelerates with heat, an Indian rooftop in May behaves very differently from the European job sites the system was originally engineered for, which is exactly why Pidilite specifies small, pre-measured 0.5 kg catalyst packs instead of leaving dosing to a site scoop. The 20 gm/kg ratio is not a rough guideline; it is the exact ratio the cured membrane’s tested properties (Shore A hardness ≥75, tensile strength >3 N/mm², adhesion >1.5 N/mm² on concrete) are validated against.

Where it is used

  • Curing agent for Dr. Fixit Triflex ProTect on flat and pitched RCC or metal roofs
  • Curing agent for Dr. Fixit Triflex ProDetail at flashing, upstand and junction detailing
  • Podium decks and terrace gardens where root-resistant, FLL-tested waterproofing is specified
  • Metal roof joints, J-bolt fixings and industrial gutter waterproofing
  • Pipe penetrations, skylight kerbs and air-conditioning duct upstands
  • Parapet edge flashing and precast concrete construction joints
  • Detailing over existing PVC, TPO, EPDM, PU, polyurea or APP membranes at transition points
  • Concrete-to-metal, metal-to-PVC and metal-to-glass junction treatment

Key advantages

  • Cures the Triflex resin to touch-dry in around 45 minutes at 20°C, letting crews complete a roof in a single working day
  • Supplied in pre-weighed 0.5 kg packs, removing guesswork from site dosing
  • Produces a seamless, fleece-reinforced membrane rather than a jointed or lapped system
  • Cured membrane is root-resistant per FLL/EN 13948 — genuinely suited to podium and terrace-garden decks
  • Delivers tested mechanical performance (Shore A ≥75, tensile >3 N/mm², adhesion >1.5 N/mm² on concrete) when dosed correctly
  • System carries CE marking under ETAG 005 and EN 13501-1 Class E fire classification, useful on institutional specifications
  • Works across concrete, metal, PVC and glass substrates when matched with the correct Triflex primer
  • Fast turnaround shortens roof shutdown time versus built-up or torch-applied membrane systems

Limitations & considerations

  • Only compatible with Dr. Fixit Triflex ProTect and ProDetail base resins, not interchangeable with other resin brands or PMMA systems
  • Very short pot life (15–20 minutes at 20°C) means mixed material must be applied immediately, with no margin for a slow or understaffed crew
  • The 20 gm/kg dosage is exacting — under-dosing leaves a soft, under-cured film, and over-dosing risks premature gelling before application
  • Requires a slow-speed mixer and a trained applicator; this is a specification product for professional crews, not a retail DIY item
  • Cure speed is temperature-sensitive, so peak Indian summer conditions shrink the working window further and demand tighter site coordination
  • Effective only when paired with the correct substrate-specific Triflex primer — skipping or mismatching the primer undermines adhesion regardless of catalyst dosing

Selection & best practice

Weigh the catalyst rather than eyeballing it, 20 gm per kg of base resin, checked on a scale. Mix with a slow-running drill-mixer for at least two minutes until completely lump-free, then transfer to a second container and give it a final stir; small quantities can be hand-mixed with a stick. Only mix as much as the crew can lay within the pot life — on hot Delhi NCR afternoons that means smaller, more frequent batches rather than one large batch that gels before it is rolled out. Apply the first coat at roughly 2 kg/m², bed the Triflex Fleece into it while still wet and roller out any air bubbles, then follow with a second coat at roughly 1 kg/m² to fully saturate the fleece; total consumption should not fall below 3 kg/m². Confirm surface temperature is at least 3°C above dew point before starting, since a moisture film under the resin shows up later as adhesion failure. Wear gloves, eye protection and protective clothing while mixing and applying, and keep unopened catalyst stored between 8°C and 35°C, away from direct sun, where it holds for 24 months.

Industry use cases

Residential terraces & podium decks

Applied with Triflex ProTect and Fleece to give root-resistant, FLL-tested, walkable waterproofing under terrace gardens and planters, where torn acrylic coatings under planter boxes are a recurring complaint.

Commercial & industrial roofing

Used on large flat or metal industrial roofs and gutters, where a fast, single-day cure minimises production downtime compared with torch-applied bituminous membranes.

Institutional & large specified projects

Specified on hospital, IT-park and large commercial roofs where the CE mark under ETAG 005 and EN 13501-1 Class E fire rating matter to the consultant’s specification.

Retrofit detailing

Used with Triflex ProDetail to re-flash pipe penetrations, skylight kerbs and A/C duct upstands on ageing roofs without disturbing the existing field membrane.

Precast & industrial construction

Applied at precast concrete construction joints and metal-to-concrete junctions where a rigid sealant would crack under thermal movement.

Frequently asked questions

Can I buy Triflex Catalyst separately, without the base resin?
Space Arc sells it as part of the matched Triflex kit, base resin, catalyst, fleece and primer, because the cured membrane’s tested properties are validated against that exact 20 gm/kg ratio. We do not recommend, and generally will not supply, the catalyst as a standalone item to pair with resin bought elsewhere.
What happens if the dosage is off?
Too little catalyst gives a soft, tacky, under-cured film that never reaches its rated hardness or tensile strength; too much can make the mix gel before your crew has finished laying the fleece. Always weigh 20 gm per kg of base resin rather than estimating.
How much time do we actually have once it’s mixed?
At 20°C, roughly 15 minutes for ProDetail and 20 minutes for ProTect. On a hot Delhi NCR terrace that window shrinks further, so mix in smaller batches and keep fleece and rollers staged before you start.
Is this the same as Dr. Fixit’s acrylic roof coatings like Raincoat or New Coat?
No — those are single-component acrylic systems that air-dry over a couple of days. Triflex is a two-component PMMA resin that chemically cures once the catalyst is added, setting in under an hour.
Can we keep leftover catalyst for the next job?
Unopened packs are good for 24 months stored cool and dry between 8°C and 35°C, away from direct sun. Once mixed into resin, though, it has to be used within its pot life; there’s no saving a mixed batch for later.
Do our applicators need any special safety gear?
Yes — gloves, eye protection and protective clothing during mixing and application, with immediate washing if it contacts skin or eyes. It’s a professional-application product, and Space Arc’s applicator teams are trained on the mixing procedure.

How we position Dr. Fixit Triflex Catalyst

Triflex Catalyst only makes sense alongside the rest of the Dr. Fixit Triflex family: Triflex ProTect for open roof fields, Triflex ProDetail for flashing and junctions, Triflex Fleece as reinforcement, and the substrate-matched primers (Cryl Primer 222 for concrete, Metal Primer, Glass Primer, and 610 Primer for TPO/FPO/EPDM membranes). Space Arc supplies and applies the full kit rather than the catalyst in isolation. Within Dr. Fixit’s own range, it sits a tier above the everyday acrylic roof coatings most Delhi NCR homeowners know; those suit routine terrace waterproofing on a budget, while Triflex is the PMMA specification product for podiums, industrial roofs and detailing where fast turnaround and CE-marked, root-resistant performance matter. For specifiers comparing chemistries rather than brands, Fosroc’s polyurethane-based Proofex and Nitoproof liquid membranes cover similar large-roof and podium scopes on a different PU chemistry with its own cure profile and primer requirements — a reasonable alternative where a project’s spec calls for PU rather than PMMA, or where Fosroc is already the incumbent system on a phased project. We could not verify a live, matching Fosroc product page on space-arc.in to link directly, so no structured cross-sell is shown here — happy to add one once a specific Fosroc SKU is confirmed.
